I'm saving for house & just switched to KBC current account so needed to take 3k out of BOI saver.

However, have had PB's before, I know it's random return, but generally positive experience all round??

Current interest rates are rubbish. So, if you have a bit of spare money, they offer a viable alternative to putting the money on deposit. If you win nothing, you’ve probably only lost a few quid. Even 1 win a year is likely to put you well ahead.

But don’t do it if you’re going to get stressed if you don’t have any wins.

It’s nuts. I wrote to them with the following suggestions
    1. change the notification “letter” to electronic notification (e-mail, text etc)
    2. allow an opt out
    3. put the money saved into the prize fund - I estimate it would add a minimum of 10,000 additional 50 euro prizes per annum, perhaps more.

Calculated thus: 4,500 prizes (letters) per week, 52 weeks in the year, €2.50 per letter, is a Saving of €585,000 per annum, which would fund 11,700 additional €50 prizes.

The €2.50 per item might sound exorbitant, but people have little realisation of the costs associated with raising/printing/enveloping/handling/posting/filing/storing letters even in a bulk correspondence environment when the infrastructure, hardware, software, labour, management and overhead costs etc are included. I have seen and worked with figures of up to €10 for this. In this example I am assuming An Post and Fexco to be super efficient and so allowing a figure of €2.50 per item)

I got my new bonds from last Friday's win today. Accompanied by an explanatory leaflet, with information on how to change from reinvestment if people want to. No separate letter this time.

They are up to the AQP773xxx series.

I can't believe you are still going with this. Great experiment, and well done for keeping it up.

    But you are absolutely crazy.

But come back in 8 years and 6 months though.

    Edit: Not to mention diversification.

I invested €2800 in the S&P500 and after 8 months it stands at €3,454...Thats €654 up...of course that can go down but...The Tax will still need to be paid on this when i sell or after 7 years

Too little information. If they have a diversified portfolio with 5% in Prize Bonds, it would be no harm. If they have their life savings in Prize Bonds, it could do with some diversification. You would be better to find out before telling them they are absolutely crazy.

So I work that out as a 1.3% annual return over nine years.

Would leaving 25k in a savings account not do better than that?
