I didn’t realise “we” had appointed a spokesman on our behalf. Why do these "so-informed-on-financial-matters-whizzkids” who know it all even bother reading the postings on PBs - please don’t waste your time. “We” will all be the happier for it.

I got €50 week before Christmas which was a nice treat. That's three €50 in 3 years. Hopefully more in 2020!

It's funny how random the prize bond results can be. I've had €100k 'invested' since May 2017 and the only prizes I have won have been at the €50 level (hardly surprising). It has varied from winning 3 prizes in one week to having 25 weeks between wins.

This 25 week gap finished on Friday when I won 2 prizes. Before that, I had won 9 prizes in just under 5 months, but also had a spell when I only won 2 prizes in just over 9 months.

Total winnings to date are €1,300, which equates to an annualised rate of 0.49%. Given how low interest rates are at present and the fact that winnings are free of all taxes, this represents quite a reasonable return for a risk free investment.

You’re doing well, that return is above average.

And remember, your 0.49% return is DIRT free. You would need a return of .75% from a bank or any other source that was liable to DIRT.

    Jaysus that's amazing.

    I've three 50s in 2019

Do you mind me asking how much you've invested?

About 100k in total. Bear in mind though we had a very dry run last year where we had no win at all for months on end.

2018 my year in Prize Bonds.

    January No win.

    February No win.

March, finally on the 29th, ending a 26 week winless run going back to October 2017.

    April One win.

    May No win.

June Four wins, including two on the 8th.

    July No win.

August Four wins in four consecutive draws.

    September One win.

    October No win.

    November Three wins.

    December One win.

In total fifteen wins each of €50 giving me a return of 0.52% which is 50% above the expected return with normal luck of 0.35%. Obviously helped in no small measure by June and August.

The wins came from my January 2006 Small Bunch (2 wins 1%). March 2009 Small Medium Bunch (2 0.54%). March 2010 Big Medium Bunch (1 0.17%). January 2010 Big Bunch (9 0.63%). Plus one win from €150 reinvested in January 2012. But five wins came from a series of 2591 bonds in my Big Bunch. If I had held only these bonds during the year they would have produced a return of 1.54%.

Good luck to all in 2019.

    2019

    January. 1 win.
    February 2.
    March None.
    April 2.
    May 2.
    June 4, 2 on 14th.
    July None.
    August 2.
    September 1.
    October 1, on the 4th.
    November None.
    December None.

15 €50 wins for the year, same as 2018.
Small Bunch No wins 0%. Small Medium Bunch 2, 0.54%. Big Medium Bunch 5, 0.85%. Big Bunch 8, 0.50% (2018 was 0.56%, not 0.63). A series of 964 bonds in the Big Bunch won €200. If I held only those bonds that would be a return of 3.32%.

Good luck to all in 2020, and I hope to break my 14 week dry spell soon.

January 2020 will have 4998 €50 prizes every week, up from 4,940 in December 2019, and up from 4,516 in January 2019. Total prizes has gone over the 5,000 mark at 5,019.

I thought there must be a decrease in prizes coming to stem the continued inflow of funds which the Government doesn't need. But they might continue as is, with the €250K cap keeping the high rollers away

As someone who hs won in the past am I right in saying that once you win your ticket —and possibly the value of that ‘investment’ is then gone from the ‘drum’ and so that ‘investment’ is then lost.

Q1: If your prizebonds certificate was for e100 dies this mean the whole e100 is gone or just the price of the winning ticket?

Q2 : Have the people that figures the % return on their ‘investment’ factored this loss in and are they then still ahead?

Q3 : I have a lot if prize bonds from when i was a kid -£20 here £100 there, £50 here. Although I do have aomewhere a list of prize bonds numbers I NEvER got a readjusted list with new prize bonds numbers to reflect the change of pounds to euro -technically as my money was now worth a different amount my prize bonds values should have been adjusted and us notified.Am I alone in thinking this or did they get away with a big fiddle.

Is my Prize Bond included in every draw?
A registered Prize Bond is included in every draw until it is encashed. With Prize Bonds you are eligible to win not just once, but every week. Each individual Prize Bond is eligible to win one prize in every draw.

The Prize Bonds Regulations are hereby amended—

    (a) in Regulation 2, by the substitution of the following definition for the definition of “bond”:

“ “bond” means a prize bond with a principal repayable value of—

    (a) in the case of a bond to which the serial number DL000001 or a subsequent serial number has been allocated pursuant to Regulation 5, €6.25; and

    (b) in the case of all other bonds, €6.35”;

    (b) in paragraph (1) of Regulation 4, by the substitution of “€6.25” for “ £5”; and

    (c) in Regulation 9, by the substitution of the following paragraph for paragraph (2):

“(2) Each bond included in a draw shall have a chance of being selected for a prize in proportion to the principal repayable in respect of the bond.”.

    3. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Prize Bonds (Amendment) Regulations, 2004.

    (2) The Prize Bond Regulations and these Regulations may be cited together as the Prize Bonds Regulations, 1993 to 2004.

    (3) These Regulations shall be deemed to have effect from the 1st day of January, 2002.

In brief, prize bonds that win do not die. They remain active and are entered in every subsequent draw until you encash them. in other words a single bond can win In an unlimited number of separate draws. (Answering your Q1 and Q2)

There was no reissue of bonds at the time of conversion from Irish Pounds to Euro. The old IR£5 Prize bonds have a value of €6.35 using the conversion rate set by the central banks. If you encash these now you get €6.35 per bond. New bonds are issued at €6.25. If you encash these you get €6.25 per bond. So pleased to report no fiddle, large or small. (Answering your Q3)

That’s two chips off your shoulder.

What a start. Not one, not two but THREE...... Happy Days !

(I doubted this so much I logged off and back on again twice to check and recheck)

    Winnings on 10th January €150 (3x€50)
    Last win: 13th December €50
    Weeks since last win: 4

    2017 (Jul-Dec) - €100k – 7x€50 = €350
    2018 (Jan-Dec) - €200k – 12x€50 = €600
    2019 (Jan-Dec) - €250k – 20x€50 = €1,000
    2020 (Jan-Jan) - €252k - 3x€50 = €150

Do the old prize bonds that are now worth €6.35 get a proportionately higher prize if they are drawn, i.e. €50 becomes €50.80, €500 becomes €508 and so on?

Might invest a little more into PB, possibly another 20/25% and see if that helps!

    Not directly, no.

    See dxhound2005's post above.
“(2) Each bond included in a draw shall have a chance of being selected for a prize in proportion to the principal repayable in respect of the bond.”.

You don't get a larger prize, you get a greater chance of winning. I calculate it to be a 1.57% greater chance.
