    Folks,
Was looking at a Golden Media combo box (9080 box). Was reading a review that says in the Uk, this can only show DTT in std def. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/digital-tv-recorders/golden-media-unibox-9080-986684/review

Is this true for Ireland also ? If so it's not for me.

If the reviewers had problems with this unit why buy it?
This might be a better option and much cheaper.

    Hi Gerry,
If there is a doubt I won't but it can be established that it is a UK only problem, then I like the box so why not.

Its suitable for irish DTT according to here
    http://www.sat-planet.ie/HD_Combo_satellite_receiver

but at 149 euro, its twice the price of the ferguson combo flagged in the previous mail. Anyone bought one of these yet?

Correct, UK is MPEG2 for DTT, I'm not sure how they do HD on UK terrestrial, but I think streams are very different, so I wouldn't be surprised if its HD capable for DTT here and elsewhere, but SD only in the UK. Would some of our experts care to explain?

Terrestrial tuner is DVB-T, whereas DVB-T2 tuner needed for UK Freevew HD.

    Good basic explanation here,
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090724043100AAiebkA of difference between DVB-T and DVB-T2. Both can carry MPEG4 HD streams but DVB-T2 uses a different transport stream. So a DVB-T receiver can receive HD or SD when transmitted in MPEG4 (Irish DTT) or an SD stream in MPEG2, i.e. UK SD channels, but not MPEG4 HD if it is carried on the T2 standard, which is UK HD on DTT. I assume the Edision mini (whose thread this is) would have a similar problem in the UK when receiving UK DTT, but its on satellite anyway, so who would notice.

Jeez, my brain is melting with all the techie jargon :).

So just to clarify - the golden media box can show Irish DTT HD ?

And sorry for hijacking the mini thread - that was more board incompetence than ignorance on my part.

Yes the Golden Media Unibox works for Irish DTT, but dont count on too much support with the box as not many have them.

I bought the Golden Media 9080 in May for 152euro, It is set up for both Mpeg 2 (UK) & 4 (Irl) the combo works well with both Terrestrial (7 Channels RTE1,RTE2,TV3,TG4,3e, RTE News Now, RTE+1) and with Astra 2a Satellite (200 channels). It does not support the digital teletext but does support standard teletext. I've had it 3 months but in the last few days I've been having a few problems with the sound on the terrestrial channels - it keeps coming and going every few seconds and I cant seem to solve it. the sound on all of the satellite channels is working fine. I tried changing settings, retuning, checking connections scart etc but to no avail. If anyone has a solution I be delighted to try!!

I also bought the Ferguson Ariva for our second room brand new for 80euro from Poland. I have it for two weeks & have to say I am more impressed with the ariva for its price. Great value. Does everything that the Goldenmedia 9080 does but its nearly half the price. I have connected a HDD and have all the plus functions. Both receivers support HD and will work dually with terrestrial & satellite. I would however sway towards the Ariva for four reasons 1. Very few people have the Golden Media 9080 in Ireland & there is little support online for any troubleshooting // 2. I know of three different saorview & satellite installers that are recommending & selling the ariva for approx €125 so there will eventually be a lot of support online // 3. You can purchase the Ariva online for €80 if you wanna DIY at:
    http://www.satshop.tv/Ferguson-Ariva-100-HD-PVR-USB-LAN-1x-Smartcardreader
    4. The Goldenmedia seems a little too temperamental.

If anyone comes across any solution for my sound problems on the Goldenmedia I would be v gr8ful if u share. Cheers

Well, I got my Golden Media box installed yesterday. It seems to be the standard offering of a local installer in Limerick area (Val Olshansky of http://www.freetoairireland.com/). In fairness the box looks great, works well and is Sky-free which is great. Have to say I am loving the HD picture too ! It's not as slick as a Sky+ box, but I have a Western Digital 500G HDD connected and it works seamlessly.

I was unsure what to make of the installer as I had no reports of him at all, but in fairness he was excellent. Took the time to put the aerial where I wanted it, waited while I finshed a work call, explained the functions to me etc. I would highly recommend him.

I had problems with the sound on the terrestrial channels since last night - Wednesday - it keeps coming and going every few seconds but it is fine now again. Obviously some one working on transmitter. Using edison argos mini combo box and Maghera transmitter.

Stanjnr, this link is for the Ariva 100HD, which is the Sat only Box. The combi is the 120 HD, not listed yet on the Satshop.de site which is where this link is for. Perhaps you meant the SATSKLEP site,
http://www.satsklep.pl/index.php?s=produkt&id_prod=1081&id_kat=279&id_typu=0 , where the Ariva 120 is about 80 euro including postage at the moment, or buy from www.satellite.ie if you want Irish support and the irish channels loaded up. There is a huge thread for this receiver at http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056284276&page=111

    112 pages!
