Think i may have sprained my ankle running half marathon yesterday. Couldn't put my weight on it yesterday and can't put full weight on it today. in the last 24 hours i have taken 8 nurofen, iced the ankle for about 3 hours, put deep freeze on the ankle three times, rested it fairly well and now have a strap on it. A little better at the moment, but am fairly worried regarding (1) how bad the injury is and (2) how much training can i afford to miss.

Will see a physio in a couple of days and am doing no running for next few days at least. Lucky to be walking in work to be honest. Hoping it improves quickly if i look after it.

Thanks to MrSlow and Nules10 for the sound advice :D

Worked 10am till 2am yesterday and got out for the 6.5km today.
(Changing up the plan a little this week as going to Cyprus Friday night - I want to get my 30km done Fri morning beforehand.)

    Hope you feel better soon!

    Thanks Tiptoe.

Got a fright yesterday, five minutes after i finished the half, my right ankle wouldn't support me. Just kept giving way and very painful.
All i could think of was missing the marathon or even missing some training run's for the marathon.
I'm not great for resting up and not very patient with these injuries, but in this case, i suppose i'll have to be.

You'll know more once you see the physio though, the marathon is still 42 days away!! Plenty of time to heal! :)

Delighted with my run on sat especially after being sick, but a mini taper always helps. i was looking at my per min times and my fastest mile was the last one up the hill, so feeling much more confident about DCM now.

I bought a pair of 1000 Mile Compression Socks at the weekend, they're really helping the muscle fatigue after the half-marathon effort. Has anybody else used them and what do you think?

Hi guys, just looking for some advice please.
    I missed Wk 9 & 10 LSRs due to niggle. I then did 14m & 16m Lsrs Wks 11 & 12.
Feeling good now after enforced break, and two good weeks and am thinking of doing 18 this week to match back in with schedule, followed by easy week. (Only thing is this would be 3 weeks increase in a row.)

Would I be better with step back week this week? I would prefer to have step back between 18 and 20 milers though, and go ahead with 18 this week.

    Thanks.

18 this week should be fine, since you're taking a stepback week next weekend.

Very hard to keep focused on the prize, 18 weeks is a long time in training and you're all 2/3rds of the way through, see below.;)

Remember LSR's ongoing in the Phoenix Park every weekend, if folks want good company to help pass the time while getting the training in :)

Just came back from my 4 miler for the day and after the 1/2 on Sunday depressed wasn't the word for how i felt, my legs literally felt like someone who had never run a mile and i started to seriously doubt even the 9 mile for tomorrow nevermind the marathon, then i looked at the video that Mr Slow put up and feel 100% better and inspired, couldn't have come at a better time, cheers Mr Slow for uploading!!:D

Everyone gets dejected and loses focus, just remember that the marathon is not to be feared, once you put the work in you will be rewarded!

This last week has seen me start proper training, with 32 miles done in 3 sessions since last Wednesday and will try and take that over 40 for the week tonight, though a hike on Saturday has really drained the legs of energy and felt it in a slow 8 mile run last night.

Not sure I should join the chart above as my training has been all over the place. Was running 10 miles once weekly during the winter and spring and kept that once a week stuff up far too long, or tacked on one more of a similar length. Still feel that my legs need a lot more miles in them, and a lot more miles on consecutive nights as opposed to one long run of 15 or so miles and patting myself on the back for a few days after.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭LaHaine

I was really struggling on Saturday in the half marathon and the thought of the video below kept me going. Hey I know its cheesy and some people will hate it but it works for me.

On the final cycle route of Gaelforce when i was trying to push it on the bike I repeated this to myself..."our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

Its hard to keep confident when you are out running on a week night and struggling with a short run, thinking how the hell am i going to do another ten miles and keep going. Thats when i think its good to have a thought like this or a little saying that you can repeat to yourself. Reminding yourself of all the miles of training and sacrifices. Sometimes its good to remember that rather than over analysing every bad run or slow day.

Roll on Dublin City Marathon 2011!

Looking for some advice. Was planning to do first attempt at marathon and tackle DCM this year. Training was going ok (short runs are fine, lsr are tough) and I completed the dublin half on Sat in 1.43 which I was happy with. Problem is I had to go for an unexpected minor operation this afternoon on my shoulder and will be out of action for 2 weeks. The plan I was following meant I needed to do a LSR of 20 miles this weekend and a 22 miler a fortnight after that. My main question is can I pick things up after 2 weeks out and if so what advice on how I can tailor training to adjust for the 2 weeks out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 895 ✭✭✭subscriber

has entries for DCM ever sold out? I only ask as after nearly 5 weeks out from running due to injury , im still unsure if ill be in good enough condition to do it. Will I have up to a possible two weeks before the race to make a decision and pay?? Same question for athlone 3/4 as well, will there be entry right up the event.. ?

Entries close on 3 October, and this will be a hard cutoff - you need to make a decision by then.

I had a minor shoulder operation end of May and was also told could be back running within 2 weeks - question that - I was subsequently advised that you should only do serious physical activity 'if you have to' and a minimum of a month rest is necessary to give the best chance of healing.
Full healing takes 6 months plus.

I was at my daughters birthday bash in the local bowling alley on Saturday - never again will I be able to bowl properly, operation just didn't sort the issue and I can still feel the soreness as I type.

I lost on Cork marathon and am struggling to get fit for DCM (different issue, achilles). Everyone is different but double check with the docs first.

What have been your longest runs so far? You don't really need to do a 22 miler, most novice plans don't go that high because the risk of injury outweighs the benefit of doing the extra miles.
Slowsteady makes a good point about how soon you can get back running, that's worth checking out with your doctor.

RayCun, I did a 20 miler a couple of weeks back in terrible windy conditions and struggled towards the end. Had to stop twice which I hoping was more to do with conditions but I was hoping to do at least one more long one to see how it went. Consultant said minimum of 2 weeks out but a month ideally, I'm back in 2 weeks to get stitches out so hopefully will know more then. I am keen to still try and make it for DCM. Would long walks help keep some sort of fitness up?

Slowsteady, thanks for the reply. Thats roughly the advice I was given. 2 weeks minimum and 1 month for proper healing. Timing is terrible I know. Hope your achilles heals up in time.

Eh, they're better than nothing but not really a cardio workout and aren't going to have anything like the same effect as running. It sounds like you'll be lucky to get back to running normally by two weeks before the marathon, and by then there is no point in going for very long runs because there isn't time for the training to have any effect. I think you're just going to have to scale down your plans for the marathon - if you do it, resign yourself to going at a slower pace than you had planned.

Same here. My focus and motivation have been terrible this week. I haven't run at all since the half-marathon on Saturday and now won't get the opportunity to do so until Thursday. Watching that video was a great motivator to set my sights firmly on the marathon! Thanks Mr. Slow :D
