Why Asia? Not UK, Eastern European or American Products?

    Where in Asia?

    When in Asia?

    How in Asia?

    So many questions.

What?! The more jobs outsourced, the more jobs lost. I think boycotting their electronics is a better idea than produce...

    How about no.

Why did you just stop at asian? Why not German/French/American etc?

I'm all for buying Irish products when I can, but it's a free market and I've yet to see sake being made in Ireland. And I love a little bit with my sushi!

But yes, U.S. made stuff just doesn't seem to hold together as well as virtually anything else.

Think you might have missed the boat on that one unless there is an Irish manufacturer of Radio/TV/audio/video equipment that I am unware of ?

Is produce from Russia or Turkey okay or do I need to check if it comes from the West or East ?

Here's another piece of truth, Ireland is an export dependent country! So before you start perhaps you need to rephrase by encouraging consumers to buy more Irish produce.

Last Xmas hoards of boards went NIrl for grocery shopping and it wasn't for unavailable exotics.

BTW, what asian produce is linked to Irish jobs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,573 ✭✭✭pragmatic1

Seriously though people should try and buy Irish as much as possible. Support your own.

In general id be a free trade kinda guy (free movement of goods services AND PEOPLE across borders) although I would go along with the notion of targeted tariffs on goods from countries whose economies were based around sweatshop/slave/child labour unless there is clear evidence of serous attempts to improve conditions in these places. This can be as much for selfish motives as anything else since it levels the playing field for Western workers.

Arbitary "boycotts" of individual countries is a pretty crude/blunt instrument however (although perhaps justified in the case of apartheid era South Africa and more recently Israel)

Why? Ireland has been a ripoff and overvalued for years. If a foreign product is of the same quality and is cheaper than an irish product, i'm buying the foreign product and so will 99.9% of people, its simple economics.

Ireland simply cant compete and wont ever be able to compete in the manufacturing industry again because of lower wages in other countries.

Its time to get out of the manufacturing industry and move Irish people into industries where we as a country can create a niche, specialise in and compete sucessfully in, areas like R&D, education, etc. We have a very highly educated workforce who demand high wages, do we want to put them on assembly lines?
