Wrong street. There's one on French Church Street, the other is on Princes St.

I have a feeling that the new place being discussed is the location where O Connail's used to be.

No, it's still there. I think that the restaurant might be where an office equipment store used to be. I can't remember the new of this new restaurant nor that of the office equipment store though.

Tried Pho the other night, have to say the food was excellent - wasn't mad on the seating arrangements or the general layout of the place, get the feeling they want quick turnover in the place, but the food is really good.

On another note was in Cronnins in Crosheaven (I know it's not in the city) but had a nice meal until my GF found a small worm in her side salad, she didn't touch it. When the waitress come over she said it to her, she apologised etc. Finished our meal and went to pay they charged her for the dish, 12euro - couldn't believe it! We could have made a point about it but weren't bothered. Either way refund or not, by not offering we ultimately will never set foot in the place again. My GF has over 8 years experience in pub/ food trade she has never come across that before. Such basic cop on.

Technically not Cork City either but not far away ... had dinner last night in Kirbys in Ballinhassig. Have been there a few times now and have never been disappointed. Last night was no exception I had enchiladas and husband had lamb shank and they were both excellent. The menu is huge so I get something different everything I go there even though I'm a bit picky. The staff are always lovely too.

Got to use that bunnyconnellans voucher. Was better than I expected in a cold november evening. View was great (moonlight and little boats bobbing around), service was pretty good, food was tasty. Salt and pepper squid are very good there.

Went to ramen in Dennehys Cross last night - the place itself has a good vibe and I had no idea they had a huge seating area downstairs! The food was only ok for me - it was edible but tasted a bit bland. I got the chicken tikka masala but I've had way nicer in Indian restaurants which I suppose you would expect anyway. I would go back again though and try something else.

Ah, O Connail's has changed name to ÓCO Chocolate Bakery and the Tapas and Street Food place is next door. Didn't take in the name.

Edit : I just looked it up.
    It's called Tedo Tapas

Was in McCurtain St at lunchtime yesterday and popped into The Fish Wife - they have a "working man's lunch" for 6e - haddock, chips & mushy peas. Seriously good stuff!

Went to Pho on Douglas street last night.

I have mixed feelings about the place. I really wanted to like it.
First of all, the actual sign for Pho above the door is so small it's pretty easy to miss the place. It has a large plain white frontage with a small red square above the door.

It's also way too bright inside - they could dim it to add a bit of atmosphere. At the moment it reminds me of that "Mama's Kebab" place on Washington street with the blinding white lights. The layout is also a bit strange.

Anyway - the four of us got seated and ordered. I got a chicken roti with lentil sauce for starters - it was mostly fecking delish and well worth the €6. I could have had it as a main actually so I would share this if you're eating with somebody else. I say “mostly” delish because it came with a tiny bowl of deep fried anchovies which were absolutely vile. But overall - savage. Others with me got egg rotis and lentil sauce – I had a taste of them but prefer the chicken.

Mango lassi juice is nice – I would recommend it.

My girlfriend is vegetarian so most times I get something that I can share with her. She does actually eat fish but this time we decided to go full veg – I was pretty stuffed from the starter so a light main course would be fine for me.

There are two options in the vegetarian section of the menu so we got one each. My girlfriend got some steamed spring rolls filled with random veg which were tasteless. I had half of one and I don’t remember tasting anything.
I got some sort of warm salad which included cucumber, bamboo shoots, pan fried tofu, deep fried tofu (I think), French beans and some other long crunchy thing – possibly raw bamboo stalks? This was all covered in a heavy peanut sauce. It was pretty crap. It was also my first time tasting tofu – the stuff is disgusting, and I like all foods. I even ate grasshoppers before and they were yummy.

Anyway I feel sorry for veggie people. If you’re a veggie – don’t go to this restaurant! If you eat fish you’ll be fine.

Luckily another guy with us got chicken curry so I had a taste – now that was really nice. He also gave it a double thumbs up and he’s of Indian heritage.

Memories of last night summed up:

    Too bright inside

    Beer on tap

    Roti starter yummy

Vegetarian dishes not nice at all.

    Chicken curry yummy

Tofu is the most hideous thing I’ve ever tasted.

The Fish Wife is my guilty pleasure, I honestly don't think I can pass the place without going in. If I got the fish in a restaurant, Id be happy, the fact its from a chipper is bloody brilliant. Chips, Burgers, Chicken, pies all are the best around.

Travelling on Fr Matthew Street the other day I noticed that that large building which has had loads of failed incarnations (it was the Bank Casino and Café at one stage) is now being transformed into an Asian Street Food restaurant. It's what the city needs.

The best Asian Street Food in Cork is the one on the corner of North Main St and Castle Street - NOT! It's basically a chinese take-away with a massive "Asian Street Food" sign over the door - cashing in or wha?!

    Agreed.

I tried it when it opened - just noodles in a box with horrible black gloop, like the Ramen restaurants.

I gave them a second chance a month or so later. Equally unimpressive. Got the beef rendang and it was basically a beef stew. Nothing really Asia-y about it. I won't go there again.

So far I've tried the following "Nu" Asian restaurants:

    Sakura McCurtain St
    Ramen Anglesea St
Dashi on ... something street near Crane Lane
"Asian Street Food" on North Main Street
    Wagamama North Main Street
    Wabi Sabi Oliver Plunkett Street
    Pho on Douglas Street
    Aroi in Carey's lane

The only ones I've had a nice meal in are: Aroi and Wagamama. Dashi is OK I guess but I don't like sushi in general. You have to spend a lot to get full.

Do I need to book a table for Aroi or do they do walkins?
(am planning for about 8pm tonight but time is a little uncertain at the moment)

We walked in on a Bank Holiday weekend so should be ok to walk in I'd say.

Going to Electric for an early bird tonight - can't wait, it's been a while since I've been there so the menu has changed but it looks good!

Went to Arthur Maines on Sunday for a bite. First time there and it really impressed. Great casual food for sharing and having a drink over. The roasted potatoes are savage, couldn't get enough of them.

What kind of food do the kids like? Do you prefer manic places with them (mcdonalds/milanos) or places you'd eat yourself?

Mine love Market Lane, because them give them colouring pencils and a puzzle sheet. I think they are great with children in there. It would be my top one. Good quality food there too, doesn't feel like you are feeding them rubbish.

I've brought the kids to Gino's for pizza and icecream too... it's very basic, but I like the icecream there myself from when I was a smallie.

Paradise Crepe on acadamy / french church street is another one mine like, because they are pancake nuts.

Wagamama is fun for children if they like noodles.

Kudos in the clarion is very child friendly too, but possibly a bit far from the everyman.

sorry, I was a bit vague.

I was preferring places where the parents would eat too, ie, not the fast food joints.

The kids like pizzas, pasta, chicken, the 5 year old likes a good home made burger :) and chicken curries and stir-fry.

They are great suggestions @pwurple, actually Kudos isn't too far from the Everyman so it's an option because they like rice based dishes.

Market Lane would be very handy too, never thought of that. Cheers.
