Hi All - i will be visiting with my boyfriend from Limerick for a weekend soon. I am looking for suggestions for a Saturday night meal - something casual and fun with some drinks but still not a pubby place (if that makes sense) - any food type is ok. We are in our early 30's. We had a good meal in Yamamori in dublin which is the kind of night we want again - relaxed, can get dressed up if we want or dressed down, good food and a good atmosphere where we can still hear ourselves. Also we have an Aroi here so thats out!

Then for sunday night (which might be a tricky night for a good place to be open) something a little more romantic. Again any food type is ok.

I am a veggie, boyfriend is a committed member of the meat-club. Also it needs to be in the city centre so we can leave the car at the hotel!

Hopefully the ever helpful people of Cork can advise! Thanks all

For Saturday, I'd go with The Boardwalk or SoHo. Both have great food, a bar, and a more relaxed atmosphere than standard restaurants.

For Sunday, maybe Liberty Grill, Market Lane or Amicus?

Liberty Grill is closed on Sundays. Market Lane is still quite buzzy on a Sunday night when it can be a bit dead around.

i would suggest Orzo for saturday night - they do great veggie food and some meat dishes
its fun but they do not take bookings so be sure to go there early and at least put your name down; you can go and have a drink next door while you wait - arthur maynes - cool wine bar

Orzo is a good idea alright, but I've never managed to get in there on a friday or a saturday. It's film festival weekend too, might be busier?

Any recommendations for somewhere in Cork city for a good weekend breakfast? Somewhere you can get more than the basic fry up, maybe pancakes, waffles, eggs benedict etc. but not at extortionate prices.

    Liberty Grill?

    Tara's Tea Room
    McCurtain Street

Tara's too! Lovely place. Hubby and I went there for a light lunch on Monday, and I meant to tell you all about it. Brilliant place, quirky décor and spotlessly clean. Sandwiches were good portions, nicely presented and bread so fresh I couldn't cut it!!

In fact - I might broach the idea of breakfast on Sunday with the hubby when he gets in...:D

    Liberty Grill?

Tried Liberty Grill for pancakes last weekend. Found it disappointing to be honest. 3 very small pancakes and a tea came to the bones of €7 - no issue with paying but it didn't really satisfy me at all. Not a regular pancake for breakfast eater so maybe I had unrealistic expectations though.

The Holy Grain on Washington St do a nice breakfast too. Good quality produce in it.

The Bodega which is very central - brunch menu and Tara's Tea Room as already mentioned.

Haven't had breakfast there myself yet, but the Woodford has a great menu now for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They do they Full Irish and eggs benedict etc.

My daughter is like a map of Cork pancakes. everywhere we go she hunts them out. The Sugar Cube over by Electric do them, which is nice on a sunny day, and Paradise Crepe (these are the largest). The half door cafe on french church street does them too.

I was in Jacques Cafe on Oliver Plunkett street a while ago, and they advertised pancakes for breakfast. They also do waffles I think. No full-irish. I had a sausage roll there, and while they can be fairly plain and boring, and the price seemed mental (4 quid) I was just in the mood for one that day, so I tried out this magical 4 euro sausage roll, slightly cynically, to see what it could possibly offer for that money. It was awesome. This was no frozen, bought in yoke. Spicy homemade ketchup. Lovely crumbly pastry, peppery sausage, decent portion. I'd recommend it to a friend. :D

Thanks so much to everyone who offered suggestions for my weekend in Cork! Its really is the best city for so many things in Ireland.

    Thanks again!

In my humble opinion Liberty Grill is the best for breakfast in Cork. Their eggs benedict can't be beaten. I have been known to queue on a Saturday morning for a table on many occassions.....

Does Cork City have a good authentic Spanish tapas restaurant anymore?

Sounds like the ones from Cinnamon Cottage in Rochestown (I know its not a resturant but it has food :))

Their Sausage rolls are to die for!

Nope. There were rumours of two tapas places opening "soon", though I haven't heard anything else about it and all I know is that one of them is called Upstairs.

Any recommendations for a laid-back place for a Fri evening meal with my hubby? Even excellent bar-food with a nice atmosphere...

We're only there for 1 night and staying in the Imperial, so somewhere central would suit us.

    Thanks!
You could try Elbow Lane Brew and Smoke House on Oliver Plunkett Street.
I haven't been but the menu looks fantastic.
    Very near Imperial too.

There is a new Tapas and Street Food of the World place on Princes Street (beside O'Conaill's, I think). I don't know what it's like though.

Had lunch in Reardans today. Wasn't expecting much but it was really good. I had the pulled pork sandwich which was excellent and my husband had the turkey wrap special which he enjoyed as well. The staff were lovely as well.

First time in Aroi for tea after work tonight . Very nice . Lovely staff and lovely food . Good price and a good portion. We got the leftovers of my prawn dish to take away . Would recommend it for a tasty Thai/Asian dish .
