    RALPH RIEGEL – 28 AUGUST 2013

THE Naval Service's oldest vessel will end 35 years of proud service next month and be auctioned off for conversion to a luxury cruise ship or research vessel.

Come on Ralphy, you can do better, In fact the headline mentioned luxury liner? Do a little research bud.

Lead ship LÈ Samuel Beckett will enter the water at the shipbuilder's Appledore yard in southern England on 3 November, a Babcock representative told IHS Jane's at the DSEI exhibition on 11 September. This will be followed by a keel laying ceremony for the second ship on 4 November.

Under current scheduling, LÈ Samuel Beckett is on track to be handed over to the Irish Naval Service in February 2014, with delivery of the second ship expected in February 2015, Babcock said.

Slim chance of that. The ship it is to replace will be decommissioned on Friday and will be going for auction the week after.

Good point, maybe we might get to see it beside Le Aoife or Aisling, I think once people can see what is being replaced they will be much more appreciative of the new ships.

I don't suppose there are any images of the new ship under construction lurking about? Ive looked but can not find anything.

What's going to become of the decommissioned Naval ship?
Would need a mighty big hole if they intend sinking it in quick drying cement !

Not quite. Her conversion was never completed.

Why are we parking up a ship when its replacement is not here yet? If you drive to work everyday and buy a new one you dont sell your old one until you get your new one as you still have to get to work.

The difference between you driving to work and the naval service carrying out patrols, is the naval service have more than one ship. they tend not to have all 8 out at the same time, so there will still be plenty of cover till the Samuel Beckett arrives.

Remember too that the crew must get trained into the new ship before commissioning. You can't just hop from one to another.

i think some one posted here a while back that we only have 3/4 ships at sea at any one time. so will this mean until next year we will only have 2/3 ships at sea at any one time? as for the crew surely there is many crews for one ship and each different crew could be getting trained while they are not at sea?

No. we still have 3/4 ships available for patrol. Emer came off patrol yesterday(for good). There is still 7 other ships available, until March next year(if not sooner) when the new ship will become available.

Well Niamh seems to be tied up next to the Dockyard since her last trip to the Graving dock for some reason, so she's not patrolling anyway.

She is still in refit. Just because she isn't in the drydock does not mean she isn't being worked on.

There is still the following ships available. Pick any 4.

    Aoife
    Aisling
    Eithne
    Ciara
    Orla
    Roisin.

If we are still meeting the operational needs with one ship less does that not say to people in mr noonan's dept sure why do you need any more ships? And is it a case of bad managment in the naval service that more ships arent at sea since they can cover the loss of emer

Was kind of wondering the same , if you have 3 on patrol,1 coming off patrol / swapping over crew, 1 in reserve and 1 on refit /maintenance , what are the other two doing ?
Or is it something to do with the age of the fleet ?
