By Monday from memory there was only 3 in the Basin and sinc the Beckett has been pencilled in as a possible replacement for Niamh, I can understand why she's in for a while. Particularly when you look at the work they did in evaluating the carrying capacity of th Niamh.

An that's a fair answer, as I said I have no naval background so don't know the valid reasons for them being in as you would , but on thur/fri from a public point of view it looked bad the 5 ships in and reinforced a negative view as seen with the people singing the Dubliners song

People are going to think what they want, JJ is still on restricted duty I'd bet working up from being handed over, as I said Beckett might be getting checked in case of needing to go out to replace Niamh, Eithne was in for a while but I took that for having to deal with the aftermath (both ship and crew) of the deployment.

As for the Mistral's I still wonder whose actually going to buy the Mistral's, if NATO was smart they'd buy them and run them like the joint programs like the C 17's.

I like to see the EU buy them and use them as the basis of a joint humanitarian reaction force. Staffed by naval personnel, medical specialists etc from across the Union.

But then again I'd like to see a unified EU military, so I might be in the minority :)

It's not that often it happens but sometimes the differnet schedules overlap.

Come down another weekend and wonder why only one vessel is alongside the oil wharf.

The Irish Naval Sevice vessels still do more hull at sea days than any other European navy.

And it is as they have shown in the med unique in its small boat operational level of skills.

The Naval Service can in certain areas punch well above it weight.

A new Multi-Role Vessel with a flight deck to replace the Eithne and two other Coastal Patrol Vessels to replace the Peacocks. And that's it as far as naval assets are concerned.

The Brits would freak out at the idea of an independent EU naval force, especially one with two amphibious assault carriers. It'll probably happen in time.....after the Brits have left the EU. ;)

Not sure what they are talking about in regards to the CPV's, minesweepers? The UK is currently looking at new MHC's in the next 5 years or so, don't know if anyone else in Europe is doing replacement work for the area.

    OPV80.jpg

http://www.asmar.cl/tour-virtual/opv-83-marinero-fuentealba/index.html a great presentation of an interesting large OPV.
    Offshore Patrol Vessel

    Length 80.60 m
    Breadth 13.00 m
    Depth to deck 1 6.50 m
    Loaded Displacement 1'728 t
    Speed 20 knots
    Endurance 30 days
    Range 8'000 nautical miles
    Crew 34 persons
    Passengers 20 persons
    Main Power 4.08 MW

Built in South America, but to a German design, perhaps we could get a line of cheap credit from a German bank to build one within the EU...

  • Registered Users Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Yawlboy

only 80m and 34 crew - would be too small to replace our flagship.

That vessel looks to be on the smaller side. The new Multi-Role Vessel will likely (hopefully?) be more of a frigate type vessel given the new requirements of the NS in overseas contingencies operations.

She has 90m and 98m big sisters, but this size has been launched already.

The MRV would hopefully be something Absalon sized or something in that ballpark. These designs are good OPV's but they aren't designed for carrying cargo/troops like the suggested MRV.

That OPV2020 is a fantastic looking design. She would be noticed.

P71 LE Brendan Behan has a nice ring to it ;-)

Think the Navy aren't fans of the Stern mounted Rib system for Atlantic operations though.

    Thats a nice boat.

The moduclar units woudl accoate the army.

It has both stern and midship RHIBS launch capacity.

I wonder what the crew accommodation would be like, the Irish vessel have a very high standard compared to other naval assets as they spend so much time at sea.

A bit of space and comfort goes a long way when they are stuck there for two years

Two years? Even an SSBN doesn't have enough food for a two year deployment ;)

True but what I am talking about is a person been posted to a vessel for their two year rotation.

In that two years they will do on average 225-250 days a year on sailing order.

You need a bit of comfort if your going to drive a guy like that.

Remember a UN mission tour is only 170 odd days if even that, sailors do more time away in two years than a solider might do in five.

I don't rate the design at all, but I guess its a personal choice.

Are they looking at 2 coastal P.V's ? :o Some of the above were a bit on the small side for our needs.

From memory the WP wants them to be the same tonnage as the Peacocks...

The James Joyce is berthed at the Carlisle Pier in Dun Laoghaire this morning, are we expecting a commissioning this week?

Edit: IMO posting says commissioning to take place tomorrow in DL, they must be doing drills and sprucing her up today

Tomorrow, in the afternoon AFAIK. Enda will be there.:D

14.30hrs for anyone interested. A CASA is making low passes around DL this afternoon so must be involved in the ceremony. Hopefully the weather will play ball better than today!

A couple of shots at lunchtime, waiting for Enda! The sun came out soon after, no doubt the DF will have plenty of footage

I was lucky enough to be invited to the event yesterday. The naval service put on a good show and even the weather played ball. Only a brief tour of the ship after the formalities were over, but I hope to get a good look around in the near future. I'd say the crew will be happy to clear out of DL and get back to the day job instead of having to be under the eye of so many politicians and media.
