One Fiat engine. Is it me or is this list fucked up?

there is a reason why people say FIAT stands for "fix it again tomorrow"

It always surprises me that it is not widely known on this forum that BMW have always produced many of the best engines around. I'm not sure myself what engine deserves the title of greatest ever, but maybe Volkswagen with the W16 in the Veyron?

Edit: there seems to be a poll now added :D

Presumably motor journalists are the folks behind it, motor journalists are an awful breed of ******** (whatever your expletive of choice is :pac: )

The Rover V8 is missing which powered countless sports and luxury cars

In terms of making diesel engines less agricultural, and more viable for road transport, as well as being reliable and economical, the VAG TDI engines can't really be faulted.

My favourite engine that I've driven was the BMW M44...driveable, quick (for what it was), and economical. Engine was bulletproof at 170k too.

    +1

FIAT has done more for the development of the internal combustion engine than any other manufacturer.

i see what you've done there, lol

fiat seem to have great ideas engineered badly so they sell them to others that fix the flaws.

In that case they were forced to sell but I do agree with what you say.

They have great ideas but it takes everyone else to make it work.

Surely a contender. On the go for 40 odd years in various forms.

    wiki Rover V8

The old Arese built Alfa 3.2L V6 is a smasher in my opinion. The Fiat 1.9 Jtd is a good engine too but I couldn't possible call a pretty standard 2.0L diesel the greatest engine ever built!

Soemone is Germany needs to invest in makign sub 1 litre engines, then thered be no need for the journos to bother pickign a token non german engine at all.

Do they realise theres a motor industry outside Germany?

    Fiat multiair is also missing

One great omission from the list is a engine that was in production for 60+years that is small, light, simple and reliable, everything that a engine should be.

The VW flat air cooled engine, sure it doesn't sound like a big V8 hemi and its not as refined as a BMW V10 but is classic design.

    +1 great engine.

most of the list seems to be technological advance,or output per liter awards. it's missing rare unusual design engines like the multi-air,variable compression,or flat air cooled engines.

Nought wrong with common rail ;)

Even VW had to abandon their own diesel system (PD) and start paying FIAT or Bosch royalties like every other company in the world using common rail.

Talk about fail though, who invented DMF? I'll cut off their head myself and let it be on the youtube :D

Nought wrong with it until it goes wrong..... then everything tends to be wrong with it :D

Even VAG seem to of made a mess of it since ditching the PD diesel technology

As for a DMF, I've not had the pleasure yet so I'm not going to tempt faith by saying anything.:)

its not hard to make something reliable if its a 4.2 that puts out 129bhp, i mean come on.

True, but it is I'm two models of production cars and it does have a bespoke heads and crankcase and shaft.

the 2.0vag common rail is ****e, injector seals go leaking engine oil into the diesel and in turn back into the fuel tank which in turn clogs the turbo vains up with suit which eventually puts the car into safe mode.disaster imo

however the vag 1.9 is a far better engine imo.

The BMW 3.2 L S54 is the best in my opinion, just listen to the sound of this beast, if anyone posts a better sounding engine than this they deserve a pint!

I agree its not too hard but very few have followed. We are talking about the greatest engine ever built, surely we have to include the workhorse of the 3rd world. I didn't realise it was all about bhp!!!

Yea its great listing all the AMG, BMW, Buggatti, Ferrari & Honda's of the world....... all great engines but the greatest?

Unfortunately, there'll be 1.3 Motorrad developed BMW engines on the market soon in 3 cylinder format, and in time, I'm sure we'll have a Motorrad derrived 1.0 litre too.
