Well, I going to cancel mine - the standalone charge REALLY gets me every month when I open the bill!

but I'm not going to stop at just mine, I will end my aunts, my parents and my grannies - they all have sky for tv anyway so there not going to miss much and I'll be happy I just negated the price increase for upc for at least 200+ customers each month.

I would have thought that the with the drop in wholesale price of sky's premium channels we would have seen better competition and even a price drop!!

but it seems we are sadly mistaken!

Well this is a reason to get rid of UPC TV. Going back to Sky. Keeping the broadband though, no one in Ireland can compete with UPC for BB.

    Nope they are still there:-
    http://www.upc.ie/broadband/

Price shown is when added to an existing TV connection. Otherwise a Fibre Power Broadband Standalone Charge of €7.75 a month applies.
Free wireless router only available to new Broadband customers.

The price is still 32 there for 15mbit too, so it doesn't prove anything one way or the other.

Called them again to cancel & got put through to loyalty. Explained the situation. Guy told me that my bill will be going up approximately €3.

Told him I'd still like to cancel but that I'd most likely be staying with them for the medium term & he offered me a second pvr & connection for free for life. Means 12 month contract but I only went into contract with them last month so no great loss.

    Happy to do 12 months

Don't know if I'm being fed a line, but I was just on to exercise my right under section 17 & they said I can't cancel without penalty until the contract has changed (right now it hasn't). She also said they may be revising the amount of increase because of feedback from customers.

Then When Are We Expected to Give Notice???? If We Use The Service After The 30 Day Notice Period As Their website says: "Continued use of the services after this date is deemed to be acceptance of the changes". It Means we have accepted them?

I'd seriously question that reply from customer service.

    Hi guys,

I cant figure this out so anyone with an answer would help a lot.

I have only been a customer since August so am only 5 months into my 12 month contract.

My question is this... Can I cancel my contract under the provision under section 17, i.e. ring them up tomorrow and say that I don't accept the new terms and conditions??

EDIT: I only have the TV, does the free cancellation apply to me??

I'm in the exact same position as you. I'm pretty certain you can cancel.

Cheers, i tried calling tonight but they closed at 6 so we'll see tomorrow. Let me know how you get on

Will do. But I must say I'm happy with their service. I'm on the Family Sports plan, which gives me multiroom and all the Sky Sports channels plus Setanta Ireland & ESPN. I'm getting all this for €69. When I was with Sky I was paying over €100 for the same channels.:(

Hi guys, just to let anyone know who is interested, I managed to cancel my account today free of the cancellation charge but the agent I got through to initially played dumb about the whole thing.

The girl I got through to then tried to offer me a price DECREASE but I just said no. What a shower of chancers..

Best of luck to anyone else, I had to tell the first girl where the clause was on the price notice page..

This price increase is after an increase on 1st Jan 2010 when all TV packages went up

Will UPC be increasing their services year on year??? without adding too many channels. Sky & Vigin Media in the UK are nearly adding a new HD channel every month

And UPC's Broadband prices are alot higher than in Holland http://www.upc.nl/internet/ €30 for 30Mb for example

UPC's price hike shows astounding insensitivity in these recessionary times, perhaps what's needed is a competing cable company. Virgin Ireland anyone?

To be fair, you have to get radio and tv for 16.80, and they say they're increasing the prices on 1st of January there too.

They also charge for wired router and even more for a wireless one.

    Oh dear lord,
you do realise that cable companies here have a monopoly in their geographical areas. And once they commit to an install date no competitor can encroach on their turf, even in the install date is in three years time (and they can still stall in three years).
There was never any competition between Chous and NTL and the other cable companies. Dungarvin have had wonderful cable BB for years, tiny company but the only worry they would have from UPC is whether they are bought out, not whether UPC undercut their customers.

Also when it comes to speed, download allowences, UPC completely wipe ADSL , 3G, most wimax, and satellite. The only competition for cable BB is fixed wireless where a lad bolts a panel to the side of your house.

How much of a decrease were you getting ? I tried to get through this morning, but gave up after 20 mins:(

As a Sky customer who is looking for a bit of a PL fix, their prices aren't too bad ... €36 for Setanta & ESPN with a bit of HD content, seems pretty good IF you can live without Sky Sports?

At the moment Im paying 93 euro a month. I have 30mb BB, HD box with some extra channels for the kids, phone and another point.

I was in contact with the customer loyalty team last night before I knew about he price increases, the agent I spoke to said they would give me a reduction of 13 euro a month which I thought was a bit ****e.

After I asked if the 13 euro reduction was the best they could do she said well there is no one else that can give you this service for this price, pretty much lump it or like it. She did also say there was new packages coming out next week which she couldnt go into detail about but said the packages would be better.

Not once during the whole call did she mention the price increases which has pissed me off something wicked, only found out by coming on here.

Gonna give another call this evening and see WTF they are playing at.

I have the basic TV package with them and 15m Broadband.

The Tv service is a joke compared to Free to air or sky.

9 / 10 the box is slow to react and needs to be turned off and on again to work.

Ive been thinking about canceling the TV for a while now and this gives me the motivation to do it.

Will I be able to cancel the TV but keep my BB.??

As indeed you should - you would think that UPC would have their staff (or third party staff as UPC have described them to me) briefed on such matters.

    From UPC's website
however under the terms of your contract you have the right to cancel or downgrade your service within 30 days of 3 December 2010 without penalty if you do not agree with these price changes. Continued use of the services after this date is deemed to be acceptance of the changes.

Really don't know whether to stick it out to January with them or not. I fully expect this new offer to be for new customers only which if so will be the last straw. Hate them kind of deals especially since I have been with UPC/NTL for nearly 10 years now.

I notice the offer isn't revealed until Jan 4th and the last day you can cancel or downgrade without fee is Jan 3rd. Oh what to do?!

I hate how they include the phone on nearly everything, I don't want a phone :o

Interesting. So they're upping the speeds? According to the Silicon Republic press release, we will be able to get 10mb for 25euro a month! Why then, is it stated on their website that the 8mb (due to change?) will be 32euro? doesn't add up

Right I had sometime on lunch to give UPC a call. Just to give other people an idea of whats on offer here is what I got.

I was told Im paying €103.75 for 30mb BB, Phone, HD Box with 9 HD channels plus a second point (not HD)

The deal I got from them is now €84 and thats including VAT, so a saving of around 20 euro a month. They also threw in movies and sports for 2 months which I have to ring and get turned off or else I get charged.

The girl I spoke to was Dominica in the loyalty team and she seemed to be genuine and said she doesnt see the deal getting any better than what she gave. She did say I can ring back on the 4th Jan and double check the deals and she would make any adjustments if there is.

If anyone else is getting this for cheaper let me know :D

I am a bit peeved off, I am supposed to have 10 Euro off a month for a year but this is now the 3rd month in a row where UPC have mucked my bill up so yet again, I am paying more again this month :(

It's doing my head in to be frank

At the moment, I have 10MB broadband, HD DVR, Sky Sports and paying around 98.75 a month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭timefora_J

I know its hassle to ring em up but If I was you Id call up and if the agent I spoke to didn't sort it and give some form of proof id be asking to speak to a supervisor.

Here is the number I was given for the loyalty team 1890940140, they might be worth a shot.
