    From Charlie Wilsons War.

Joanne Herring: Why is Congress saying one thing and doing nothing?
    Charlie Wilson: Well, tradition mostly.

And that is exactly the answer the Minister for Overseas whatyamacallit said on radio on Wednesday (think it was Wednesday anyway).

Children are starving in other countries but not in Ireland!

So, we're gonna keep giving away money until that process is reversed. Progress yanno.

Dont be so cynical..maybe the various governments in Africa will host an open air concert to end the recession here in Ireland.

    The african Bono can sing:

"And the wont be sun in Ireland this christmas"

    Boom, there's €6bn right there.

    Who's got the lube?

Would that be €6bn? Doesn't seem too bad.

Why don't they sell the oil off the west coast? Oh wait, they GAVE it away already.

what about providence resources announcement this week about their find off the east coast, although we probably won't see any benefits of that until the next boom

But.. but... but how can they afford concerts when they're buying fighter planes with our development money?

Though you've given me an idea, we can sell Bono!

if NAMA introduced a rent to buy scheme with reasonable, sensible terms (unlike the laughable terms offered by developers in recent years) then that would be one way to get all these unperforming loans back in shape

tbh, that would be a much better boost to the economy than an incentive to buy new cars manufacturered everywhere but here.

I think youre being unfair on the government. They have a tough job to do and are taking difficult and unavoidable decisions.

No i mean on old cars, ie the car tax.

People wont be able to affford new cars.

Also new cars are greener so cant tax them :)

I drive an old car. Why? Because I can't afford a new one, ie. no money.

If someone is buying a new car, then they have money.

And even though I don't think cars should be taxed differently to each other, if some have to be taxed higher, then it should be new cars.

If public sector wages cant be touched again does this mean they're exempt from any income tax increases too or is that a different kettle of cod?

    Does not compute.

The price of used cars is directly linked to the price of new cars.

So the taxes are paid by everyone who buys a car, no matter how old, at exactly the same rate in proportion to the price they pay. The intial purchaser only pays the depreciation on the tax.

what do tax rates and pay rates have to do with each other.
anyway pay agreements are done on gross pay not net pay, a public service tax band would be a good way to get around not lowering wages...

Why can't public sector pay be hit when the money we're borrowing is going to pay them? I'm in the private sector, my pay has been hit twice already. Can I be exempt from this budget too?

I think they're talking about annual road tax and not VRT.

I predict a resurgence in horse and donkey transport.
