Just a few years ago there was a controversy over the govt not being able to find 10 million euro for a cervical cancer vaccine programme.

Then a couple of months ago the govt announced they were shaving €3BN in savings in this years budget.

Today it's expected (read leaked to journalists) they will announce this figure has DOUBLED in 2 months - that they now need to save €6,000,000,000.00 - 6 BILLION euros in the dec 7th 2010 budget.

The Government will announce later that €6bn in cuts and tax hikes are needed in December's Budget.

Just a few months ago, the Government was preparing the public for cuts of €3bn.

But the economic crisis for the country has now worsened to the extent that the Cabinet believes the figure needs to be doubled, making it the biggest budget correction in the history of the state.

Growth prospects for 2011 are expected to be minimal, and the Government be revealing those figures today also.

The Government hopes that by making the correction of €6bn now, and another €9bn over the following three years, it will be enough to calm the international markets.

10% off social welfare, 10% drop in public sector wages, abolish the PAYE tax credit.

    Boom, there's €6bn right there.

    Who's got the lube?

This is going to be painful, but at least we might finally get the public sector reforms we have desperately needed for so long...

    ...oh wait no.

Increase income tax across the board, cancel overseas aid, half social welfare and withdraw funding from Anglo..thats about 20 billion right there.

I just wonder how they will find 6bn considering public sector pay cannot be touched. A VR scheme would be a drop in the ocean on that 6bn?.

The only other areas to cut back are welfare and capital spending, unless they are planning stringent tax hikes like the 80s.

Cut their own wages by 100%

They shouldn't get paid to run a country into the ground, they should do it for free.

Say **** you to the eu and cut anglo loose.
    +1

Increase the VAT on petrol to about €240 per litre.*
Give every paye worker in the country a bill for €6,000.00 pa.

The overseas aid should go first. I mean what the hell are we doing giving away borrowed money for?

    From Charlie Wilsons War.

Joanne Herring: Why is Congress saying one thing and doing nothing?
    Charlie Wilson: Well, tradition mostly.

And that is exactly the answer the Minister for Overseas whatyamacallit said on radio on Wednesday (think it was Wednesday anyway).

Children are starving in other countries but not in Ireland!

So, we're gonna keep giving away money until that process is reversed. Progress yanno.

    Will cut over sea's aid.
Raise car tax on older car's, be a new green policy.
    Cut capital expenditure.
Widen the tax net and increase all rates by 1-2%
Whatever service is free in ireland you will be charged for now.
Tax your farts also, a new green policy!!

Dont be so cynical..maybe the various governments in Africa will host an open air concert to end the recession here in Ireland.

    The african Bono can sing:

"And the wont be sun in Ireland this christmas"

if NAMA introduced a rent to buy scheme with reasonable, sensible terms (unlike the laughable terms offered by developers in recent years) then that would be one way to get all these unperforming loans back in shape

tbh, that would be a much better boost to the economy than an incentive to buy new cars manufacturered everywhere but here.

No i mean on old cars, ie the car tax.

People wont be able to affford new cars.

Also new cars are greener so cant tax them :)
