I'm shocked! People here haven't actually played cs before! Well I'm sure it will be marked down during the steam sale.

I just played cs1.6 there. Managed to kill 2 people and not die, so I quit while I was ahead. :D

You can only call yourself gamer if you can "strafe Jump" in Quake 2 :pac:

You can do it in a load of games. It was a bug in the Quake engine that they decided to keep.

Few games do it decently though. Quake Live doesn't even have air control unless you pay for access to PQL physics. CPMA and Xonotic have good movement. TF2 movement is decent as well (rocket/sticky jumping and air control) but no bhop/strafe jump.

Went on HWVS looking to see if they put up any Haswell stuff (they havent yet), and i found they stock 1155 Xeon CPU's now.

I thinks its a very good alternative for people who want to build good rigs but have no interest in OC'ing (yes i know, but some really dont want to OC)

    Item|Price
    Intel Xeon E3-1230v2, boxed, LGA1155|€207.52
    Intel Core i5-3570K Box, LGA1155|€205.99
    Intel Xeon E3-1220v2, boxed, LGA1155|€183.00
    Intel Core i5-3550 Box, LGA1155|€186.42
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€801.92

put in the 3570K and 3550 to show the price comparison.

in the case of the 1230V2, its actually an ivy i7 with HT == 8 threads!

Xeon's benefit from lower operating temps and power consumption, more l3 cache and likely higher binned, may be of benefit to people who dont want a CPU failure after a few years ;)

thing is, it doesnt have a iGP, and i think its multi locked to x40 i think?

but most importantly, can anyone give me a TL;DR of Haswell? i dont have time to read over much?

all i know is it doesnt OC any better (and likely worse) than ivy, and its not much faster? so is it worth the upgrade though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

    Yeah I always forget those.

They are great options for non overclockers.

I don't see any clear benefit of going for Haswell unlike ivy over sandys pcie3 support.

Has anyone tried disabling the igp for benchmarking and overclocking. Maybe the more powerful gpu is pushing the temps up.

    Haswell's not very interesting.

The on-chip graphics is a little better, encroaching on AMD's APUs a little. Possibly an extra 20% or so, but some sites are reporting different results, so some programs may be less suitable or it could be drivers.

Performance increase isn't great. Maybe 10%.
Overclocks are good, similar to the previous two generations, but heat is an issue, climbing fast with voltage.

Chipset features are decent, most notable is the availability of 6 x SATA 6Gbps ports. Finally catching up with AMD!

Not worth upgrading from Sandy/Ivy unless you have good reason.

Lol, I just moved from Limerick after my exams and am doing coop currently. From 100 meg (recently freely upgraded from 60 to 100) to effing 6 meg in Tullamore through Magent in Tullamore. Appalling speed. Advertised as up to 24. I'm goin to give out to them in the next few days.

    Completely unlimited usage*

*we throttle you to 1meg if you use more than 4GB in peak hours (4pm to 1 am). LOL.

on 6mb now which is like heaven compared to 3 broadband at home (100kb/s with 300-500ms ping). the lag was so bad that i play better with huge pings in lol and sc2 than without.

the 6mb congested as **** though so its not fantastic but i will be moving on to a 200mb line in sep

also im suprised at how interested i am in the Oculus Rift. It is actually starting to look like something other than a gimmick

DSL is always like that, the packages in no way guarantee the speed, its all up to the distance between you and the exchange and the copper in between. If you're not close to the exchange you wont get 24Mb, no matter the provider, but they'll all tell you up to 24 as that what the system(ADSL2) supports.

I understand that. The guy did do a test on the line while I was on the phone and said it was getting over 17. So there's that. It's pretty expensive, too :/

Which company? Do you know what speed your modem connects actually connects at? You should be able to check this on the setting page(Probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254)

As much as I hate Eircom and their monopoly when it comes to DSL I find they generally give you the full speed that your line is capable of while other providers do not.
Also I have downloaded 500GB some months and not heard from them or had any throttling of service.

That could be wrongly provisioned then. Call them, get them to do a prequal test while you're on the phone, and if they get that get them to check provisioning, cause you should get more(at least at off peak).

Yep. That's what I was getting at 4.30 o clock on Friday (just before I left for home for the weekend, I won't be back for more tests 'til tomorrow :D). But I was getting consistently the same speed (~6.5 megabits) over the course of half an hour.

it reminds me of some of the caselads stuff, looks great but has a big foot print

The case is fugly. The build inside is nice though.

Wider cases look better than those older server like double high ones.

The black air grills should be orange though for that build

That. Going to assume it's a prototype though. Don't think Corsair would release something that ugly.

ya this is the first thing i thought when i looked at it. it looks far to plastic for a corsair case not to mind an obsidian branded one.

Im just wondering where people are getting their thermal compound if they are buying aftermarket stuff.

Just looking now and it seems to have gotten alot dear from the last time I bought it. Annoying as I had a good bit at home but seems to have done missing since I moved

In my opinion it is just way too plasticy.
