and you became a moderator when....

This topic has been thrashed out before. Majority have no problem with earthquakes being reported here. Report post to the Mods why dont you if it bothers you so much.
    ;)

PS. this thread is 17 pages long. Why come in now and complain? is this the first time it has irked you??

And to add my two cents worth, volcanoes can have an effect on the weather. Kizimen could have an effect on the climate in much the same way the Mount Pinatubo eruption did. So they are weather related. :P

From Icelandic Volcano and Earthquake Blog. Posted on January 2, 2011 by Jón Frímann
Update 1: This has been confirmed by more news media in Iceland. This also appears to have been going on all day. But the explosions today might have been at lower noise level during the day then happened tonight (this is unclear at the moment however). But also according to the news this explosions have been heard to Hvolsvöllur in the right wind direction (or a good weather?). This explosive booms have also been heard by other people in the area around Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

    Sorry Wolfe but apparently
that’s not the activty at Etna, that’s some light in Catania or surroundings. Currently the activity is very weak, no fountain, just small Strombolian bursts that barely clear the rim of the pit.

It would be amazing if it was. :( There is plenty of time yet though for that sort of thing I am led to believe.

Nothing new since on Eyja although it has been put forward that it may be older material on the move but no one seems to have any idea yet..

The volcano on Manam Island* in Papua-New Guinea seems to be showing signs of activitity. It does appear though from this article that people have returned to the island despite the threat. It seems to be one of those islands that is basically a volcano sticking out of the sea so no where to retreat to if it erupts.

    *
From BB at BT: It is one of the most active volcanoes on this planet. It had a series of very strong eruptions (with large pyroclastic flows and lava flows) in 2004 and 2005, which led to the virtually total evacuation of the island, and so far the people have not been allowed to return to Manam, obviously causing a lot of hardship.

Thanks Wolfe, was going to post that earlier myself, but didnt want to deal with the questions of why we are posting in the weather forum.:D;);)

Brilliant slide show isnt it? This is the cam I was watching last night. got some great screenshots.

great pics alright Jake. Etan is a very active volcano though so I am sure those at the foothills were not overly concerned

Some bits and pieces I collected to keep those of you who are interested informed if you don't have time to go looking yourself.

Kizimen still gearing up for a flank collapse.

    (Big Think Eruptions link)

Etna: Dr. Boris Behncke and the staff at the INGV Catania has been keeping us up to date with the renewed activity at Sicily's Etna. Most of the activity appears to be small explosions of incandescent material, but no new lava flows or fountaining of juvenile material so far. The INGV site has a series of images from the activity as does Dr. Behncke's Flickr stream. A lot of this activity is likely a sign that magma is nearing the surface, but as with most volcanic eruptions, it is unclear when or even if juvenile (new) lava will erupt from Etna. You can check out all the INGV webcams as well.

Kizimen: Kamchatka looks to be starting the year running, with some big puffs out of Kizimen (see below). The latest statement from KVERT from January 3:

Explosive eruption of Kizimen Volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 10 km (or 32,800 ft) ASL possible at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. According to the seismic data, activity of the volcano began increasing from ~02:00 UTC on January 03 again. Strong volcanic earthquakes and volcanic tremor are registering at the volcano. According to satellite data, the explosive eruption of the volcano continues, and ash plumes extend > 200 km (124 mi) to the south-east from the volcano. The big bright thermal anomaly over the volcano is registering all time.

All of this sounds like some significant explosive activity at the volcano that will continue to drop ash on the region.

Tungurahua: Speaking of ongoing activity, the NASA Earth Observatory posted two images of the summit area of Ecuador's Tungurahua. One shows the current plume - a weak, mostly-steam plume - along with an enhanced false-color near IR image showing the hot material, likely a small lava dome, in the summit crater. New year, same old activity at Tungurahua.

Merapi: The eruptive activity at Merapi may have waned significantly - reduced to alert status 2 (of 4) on December 30, but that hasn't lessened the threat of volcanic hazards to the region. Rain in the area near Merapi produced lahars from remobilized ash that knocked out bridges on the Putih River. One thing is clear, the recovery in the area near the volcano will take time.

A new earthquake swarm in Krísuvík volcano
Posted on January 4, 2011 by Jón Frímann

A new earthquake swarm appears to have started yesterday in the Krísuvík volcano. This earthquake swarm is a small one, in the number of earthquakes and the size of them. The largest earthquakes according to the automatic SIL system are around ML1.8 in size. The depth is constant around 2 to 5 km or so. This earthquake swarm is just the latest of earthquake swarm that have been taking place in Krísuvík volcano over the past few weeks. As the earthquake activity has been more or less continues for the past few months in Krísuvík volcano.

The current GPS plot shows some inflation taking place at Krísuvík volcano. But so far it is small and does not indicate that a eruption is immanent in Krísuvík volcano. But if the inflow of magma changes suddenly this might change when Krísuvík volcano might start erupting.

There have been no more reported explosions from Eyjafjallajökull, that I have been able to track down, and some of the Vulcarati are conjecturing that it was water from a crack in a crater lake filtering down on to still molten magma underneath which would would create explosive, rumbling sounds but this is not certain. Suffice to say that Iceland should prove exciting due to one or more its volcanoes this year.

The Mila webcams are back up and working in Iceland. They now include one at Gullfoss. That place is so beautiful. The shaking you see is due to storm conditions messing with the webcams and not EQs. :D

Just getting off the plane near Etna and about to pop my lava proof kettle on the sumit! :D My other computer got a virus or something and died earlier so I missed the best of the live show while trying to get this up and running. It's like something from the Flintstones with me pedaling madly just to change a page. You'd never think I got upgraded to 20 whatsits by UPC today. I'm like a dog. Just looking for photos and things.

Here's a flicker link to Boris Behncke's photos. It looks gorgeous.

Off to see what's happening in Japan.
