I think generally potatoes are a waste of carbs unless they're really nice french fries.

I'd actually disagree with you there, columok. Potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C and high quality protein (Potatoes are 10% complete protein). Low in omega 6, high in delicious. :)

Both, some avoid the skin 'cos of glycoalkaloids, but potatoes have been bred over centuries to be low in toxins. Avoid the skins if you like but I doubt you'll die if you do :)

I don't have a blog, I contemplated starting one but all I could think of for blog topics would be rants, and we already have Richard from freetheanimal.com for that :pac:

When I finish up my thesis I might start one up, but for now I've got oh about 300 papers to read and write up first!

Oh yeah I think I've come across his blog before. Would you have any recommended reading for someone who wants to learn about nutrition in depth but doesn't have the means to do so at University?

Oh yeah there's loads! First thing to do is get a google reader account, then add the following subscriptions:

    http://perfecthealthdiet.com

The companion blog to the very very good book, highly recommend it. It's sciencey but very readable. The comments on this blog have loads of information and the Jaminets are so helpful in response to any questions.

    http://healthcorrelator.blogspot.com/

Statistics centered content with a great series on protein going on at the moment.

    http://thehealthyskeptic.org/

Chris Kresser tackles a lot of health issues from a nutritional point of view. Highlights include the series on thyroid health and GERD.

    http://www.paleonu.com/panu-weblog/

Kurt Harris' paleo blog, worth a look if only to check out the 12 steps.

    http://donmatesz.blogspot.com/

Don Matesz's paleo blog. He was one of the first people to come to the defense of the humble potato.

    http://huntgatherlove.com

Melissa McEwan's blog on anthropology and local food.

    http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com

Art Ayer is hardcore science, I do find myself googling every third word but the info is really good.

    http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com

The daddy of nutrition blogs in my eyes. Stephan isn't paleo but he's rigourous in the science and explains things in an easy to understand way. He's a fan of fermenting food.

    http://blog.cholesterol-and-health.com

Chris Masterjohn wrote a critique of the China Study in his early 20's. The author dismissed him saying he had no scientific credentials, so he went and got a phd. Chris is not paleo and he eats gluten (gasp!) but the info on his blog is impeccable. The recent series on choline made me go back to trying to eat liver regularly again.

    http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com

This is hardcore science but worth wading through. Peter is a vet but is far more versed in nutrition literature than most nutrition scientists!

    http://evolutionarypsychiatry.blogspot.com

A brain's-eye view of nutrition and psychiatry.

That lot oughta keep you busy for a while!
