Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but just looking for some info on the Clubs and Societies in NUIM.

If you want to join one, do you need to have all the equipment and stuff? I only ask cause I fancy giving the Archery a go, as I have done it before and though it was great, and also trying out the fencing, and anything else that looks interesting.

Also, does anyone know if there is an Airsoft club? (It's like paintball, except with pellet guns)

    Thanks,
    Jack

Hey Jack, I'm actually secretary of the archery club and would love to have you come try/join! (JOIN http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/nuimarchery?ref=ts !)
You don't need any equipment for any of the clubs when you start. We provide all the gear for as long as you need it, and for competitions at weekends too. Many members decide to buy there own gear after a couple of months, as sharing can become annoying and means it won't be suited to your exact measurments.

As for the Airsoft club, never seen one around, or heard anything. Though with 60 signautres you could start one yourself! :D

Thanks. I will definitely be trying the Archery out, cause the few times I did it, I loved it.

Are there many in the club? And is there fee's for joining clubs?

And, lastly, is it just 60 signatures you need to start a club?

Brillllliant! I'll be looking out for you :P

It starts out a big club each year, like most others, but I reckon there was 20-30 by the end of the year, much more managable.

It costs €2 to join most of the clubs on fairs day, though some are free.

I'm sure there is some legislation schtuff you'd have to do, but the 60 sigs seems to be t he main thing.

Is it dificult to run a club? And, do you get funding from the college?

    Thanks for all the help:D

Well it has it's moments, as you can imagine :p
I'm only going into 2nd year, and wasn't really involved in running the clubs or socs last year. I know you have to go to the odd meeting with members from all the other clubs and socs. You'll need other peoples help, and need to write up a constitution and other things. Sorry I'm not much help, though you could drop into the SU and they would point you in the direction of someone who could help!
And no problemo, I had millions of questions to ask last year, so I know how it feels :p

I haven't. I learned that there was a airsoft place around Drogheda only a couple weeks ago and have been itching to go ever since.

Theres a couple of guy's in college that play airsoft... i reckon there would be a bit of interest

Grand so. If there isn't one already, I'll try find out what needs to be done. I know a few of the other colleges have Airsoft clubs, and they have also played against others in skirmishes, so hopefully there will be a NUIM Airsoft club in the near future.

I can't speak for this year for definite, but I know in past years there has been a card soc with regular poker games. The email might be cards@nuimsu.com?

While not involved in it myself, I know a few people in the fencing club, and while a lot of them have their own kit now, as far as I know they didn't have to pick it all up for themselves from day one. I am open to correction on that, but I know that they have a lock up in the college like many other clubs, and I doubt it's used just for what they own themselves.

    Hi Jack.
There is a paintball club in Maynooth, so getting in contact with them so see how they organise themselves would be a good idea. I am unsure if there is an airsoft club already, but there should be.

Have you had experience in running a club before? I'm not sure that there is much change from two years ago, but clubs and socs did not get any money from the college until their second year running, so it would be a good idea to keep this in mind. There is also a member of the SU who overlooks the clubs, getting in contact with him/her would also be recommended.

If you are serious about setting one up and are looking for sigs tho, you can have mine.

Thanks. I am 100% serious about getting Airsoft into NUIM, but I could have sworn that I have not any experience in running a club, but I do have plenty of experience with Airsoft, as well as being part of an airsoft team. I also plan on talking with those who run airsoft clubs in other colleges, so I will have some idea of what is needed.

And thanks, I'll send an email into the Paintball club, and the SU rep, see what the story is.

Put up the capitation forms on nuimsu.com for all the current clubs and socs heads who need them.

Look forward to seeing you there! No you don't need any fencing gear, just wear runners and tracksuit bottoms... But if you are gonna keep it up we do recommend that you get your own stuff

I was looking up about joining the GAA hurling club? It says 'beginners not catered for'. I haven't played in years, but I can play. Score from a 45, 65, take points ; the fundamentals.
I just thought getting back to college might be my chance for a team sport, and it is a good way of keeping fit too. Anyone know any info on the details on joining this club and how good you actually have to be? Cheers.

There's the Self Defence club who do jiu-jitsu & kenpo, there's an aikido club, a karate club... um that's all I can think of right now, but there could be more.

Will it be more expensive another day ?

Also, are there any pages on the web with a list of all the different clubs and societies you can join? I saw before in a handbook but I'm just wondering if it's on the internet ?

There's the Shootfighters over in Leixlip. I seen one or two of their fighters fighting up at a cage fight in Letterkenny. Serious guys.

No, it'll just be more awkward on account of tracking them down, whereas at Fairs Day they are all in one place.

Generally the free ones are the ones that aren't technically clubs or socs in the college, like the SU publication looking for personnel, or the Galway Cycle.

There's a list of the clubs and socs in the handbook you get in the post and yeah, it says there is a Gospel Choir Society. That would be rather fun! I'm gonna have such a tough time cutting down the list of ones I want to try out. I'm all up for trying new things :)

Sounds a bit, well, unconventional to put it nicely, but probably gonna try the Archery, Fencing and Tennis. Maybe a few others. I know they sound a but weird, but what the hell, you only live once. You?

Oh, and also starting an Airsoft one.

Oh that's really cool, it would be really cool to give that a go! I'm thinking of Hockey (I really wanted to do camogie but they don't cater for beginners and I haven't played for 6 years!), Soccer, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Fencing, Paintball, and Self Defence or Karate or something kind of martial Arts-y.

Lol I'm gonna have to cut it down I know, but those are the ones I'm considering. I'll have a good look around on the Clubs and Socs Day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Rafcam

Ah, table tennis, I knew I forgot something. I'll be giving that a go aswell.

I'm in the same boat as you for Hurling. Haven't played for a club or school in around 4 years. Ah well, I'm sure the other clubs and socs will keep me occupied.

we can be the two that everyone avoids for fear of getting their ear chopped off! Ahahaha
