One of the pathology lecturers is quite generous with exam hints. Brightened up "ethics day" considerably.

She's also very generous when it comes to the Jurisprudence exam....

Just a quick question. I'm hoping to do Med next year (hoping being the operative word there) and I'm just wondering how crazy the study hours actually are. I know coming up to exams would pretty much be constant study time but at other times during the year?

Basically is there any time to breathe? :)

    Yes! Plenty!

The lead up to exams is often hellish alright, but it's definitely not true to say there's no time to yourself the rest of the time. There are, of course, a few people who chain themselves to their desks, but the vast majority of people can have a life and still study Medicine ;)

    Best of luck!

Barry gives his students 90% +, the work's quite easy and you'll prob finish up early and have the option to go on a trip with him.

    The winning project.

    Avoid Pierce??
One of my mates did the 2nd year project with him, ended up showcasing their poster at an national pharm event and scooped a tidy prize. I have only heard good things about him.

Yeah I did my project with him last year and didn't enjoy it all that much. Just speaking from experience and the general consensus of the nine of us who did it with him this year. I did hear they had a much better experience the previous year though... Maybe it was just the topics!

I never did well in any spots/vivas and I always did well in my final Anatomy mark at both terms. Wouldn't worry.

Any older years know any good websites for surgical procedures? The majority of what I've found so far (for transplants just so you know) has lots about donor selection, benefits, possible complications and then maybe a page on the actual procedure. Any advice?

Joined twitter there recently and came across this guy. http://onsurg.com/video/list

Have only had a quick look through the site now and again but it looks fairly nifty.

For communication skills (second year) last year, what happened after you switched hospital sites? They want us to go back to our original site just for that class, i.e. spending your lunch break on the LUAS. They didn't bother informing the half of our year in James's of this fact, we have to pick this up second hand.

They're saying they don't want us to switch tutors, despite the fact that for all of the other classes are taken by a different tutor every week.

Pretty annoying and there doesn't seem to be much reason behind it apart from deliberately inconveniencing 160 people.

Last year we switched tutors for communication skills when we switched hospital. lol the school of med does a lot of things that don't have much reason behind them, last term we had lectures in james and then have a micro 'lab' in tallaght straight after lunch. The funny thing is it wasnt even a lab at all it was just a lecture in the computer room and then on one day after trekking all the out to tallaght the lecturer didn't turn up because he was still in james. Why it needed to be done in tallaght at all, i dont know:confused:

Hey, anyone know which stethoscope is the recommended one for 2nd year onwards?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭Abby19

Most people seem to get Littmann Classic II SE.
The clinical skills tutors recommended a few of the darker colours, I think they were black, navy, dark green and burgundy, kind of like the dress code for wards. Just in case you were planning on a hot pink version!!!
Some have higher spec ones, but a lot of those were gifts.
Depending on where you order it, you should be able to get it laser engraved with your name for free - can be handy if most of the class have the same model in the same colours.

Littmann Classic II SE is really all you need (unless someone else wants to buy you a fancier one as a present or something).

Free engraving if you get it from http://medisave.ie/, and I think it also comes with a CD of heart and lung sounds.
