    Thats great, Thank you!!:)

That Thursday looks sweet if it stays that way! although i wouldn't have a hope of getting a space in the park n ride that late in the day!
I'm definately going to have to go to the 'understanding your timetable' workshop!!

No need to do that. It's pretty easy to understand. First off, here's a list of the building codes.

    http://timetable.ucc.ie/1011/roomlist.htm

Now, here's the lecture you have on the Monday.

    SC1007/L C_LL_1 Wks 5-16, 20-31
SC1007 is the module code, i.e, the subject within Social Science you'll be studying.

The "L" beside it stands for "Lecture". Other ones will have a "T" beside it. That means it's a tutorial.

"C_LL_1" is the building code. In this case "LL" is the code for the Boole Basement and the number 1 is the lecture hall. So, you're in lecture hall 1 in the Boole for that lecture. The "C" stands for centrally located. I just ignore that part.

The "Wks" part tells you how long you have this particular module/subject for. Weeks 5-16 is teaching period 1/the 1st semester. Weeks 20-31 is teaching period 2/the 2nd semester. In this case, you have the module/subject across both semesters.

Also, sometimes there'll be a number in the top right of the module/subject on the timetable. It could be 350, 150 etc. All that stands for is how many students are registered for the module/subject.

One more thing. If the room number says something like 316 that just means your lecture is on the third floor and in lecture room 16. Here's an example.

    C_ORB_145

That just means your lecture is in the O'Rahilly Building, on the first floor and in lecture room 45.

I actually don't know what the "S" stands for. I'm sure they'll elaborate more on the day though so not to worry.

The Geography building is right on campus. You pass by it on the way out of campus when you're going towards the main entrance.

Here's a map with all of the buildings on it.

    Hi all the freshers!!

Last year we organised coffee mornings for the boards members who wanted to pop along to meet some of the posters here in person - great to meet people who are outside your course. So keep an eye out for a thread about meet-ups, we try and organise them for a time where the majority of us are free, last year seemed to be around 1pm, every couple of weeks! That goes for all the other lurkers in here as well from whatever year, feel free to come along, the more the merrier! We normally meet up around the student noticeboard in the student centre, and then find somewhere quiet enough that we can chat, end up in the coffee dock mostly!

Oh yeah most importantly!!! Welcome to UCC!!

Serious +1 to this guys. The people off the UCC forum are really sound folks and the coffee/mixed drinks (as Nova_era likes to call them!) are great way to meet friends and of course, put faces to usernames! :)

Oh I forgot you were finished, don't be a stranger to these parts. ;)

When do people usually start moving into accommodation? Is it the day or week befor the course starts? I'm asking because I'm filling in an accommodation form now and it's asking for my arrival date.

And another question : when does the Arts course finish?

I know it starts on the 16th but I couldn't find when it finishes.

A couple of days before I think is when people start moving in

The Arts course ends the 25/3 for lectures but there is a review/study week beginning the 28/3

    Thanks for that.

People generally start moving in from about the first onwards, but that's just because that's when most leases start. If you're new to the city you might want to give yourself a few days to find your way around and settle in before Freshers' week begins, apart from that it's up to you.

Like when does the year finish? Lectures usually finish up around the end of March, then there's Study Month (or misnomer month if you're doing Arts ), then exams through May. So lectures finish end of March, and you're totally finished by the last day in May.

And I'm totally going to keep hanging around guys, I've literally nothing else to be doing

edit: but not if ye keep answering questions before I get to!

Its a great course! Really interesting and its a small department so everyone knows each other and the staff are very sound. Especially John Reavy in geology! Field trips can be mad craic too

I think the "s" might mean seminar, but I would worry about this as it will all be explained to you in orientation! After a while you will figure out where most of the building and rooms that are relevant to you are. That is unless you have a lot of classes in the ORB and in that case good luck to you! :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 430 ✭✭NicoleL88

The ORB is truly a terrifying place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,247 ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

Just to explain the ORB, or to give it its proper title the O Rahilly Building is the one longside the library. It was built in a way that it is symmetrical so it can make it a bit of fun to get around! You could end up on the wrong side of the building, look out the window and see all your classmates on the other side of the building! Its a bit of a maze!

I suggest bringing a compass of some sort if you plan on going in there.

Some food, water and possibly a torch as well. All those people sitting around pretending to look at you pityingly as you try to find your way are actually lost too, they're just pretending they aren't.

When you spend most of your day in the ORB, it's funny to watch people get lost. Can't wait to get back there :)

O' Rahilly Building isn't bad after awhile (By awhile I mean a year, possibly two! :D) and you get used to it although, I've been here 4 years and haven't been down all corridors, it's fairly big.

Here's a quick shot of the builidng:

Also the couches in there are deceptively comfortable!

Since this is important to some people(me). The best toilets are probably in the North Wing or the 3rd floor of the Student Centre aren't bad either.I'd avoid the Boole Basement toilets unless it's an emergency tbh.

They are so much better than they used to be, in fairness. Library is quite good too, and if it's a special occasion then head to the Glucksman.
