Heh, you don't get a booklist :). (Well I never have :o) Your lecturers will advise what books will be useful, and in some cases, needed.

Books supplement the lecture notes for the most part and there are usually a number of books that can do the job (especially in first year when subjects are more general). These books can usually be gotten in the library. I've only bought one book and that was 'cause I needed a code that came with it for online assignments. Books are damn expensive so I wouldn't recommend buying them, as you don't know how much use you will get out of it.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

But some modules have certain texts listed as core - I would have thought that meant you better read it.

Others just have indicative texts listed.

Would that mean that you need to read the whole thing, or just bits out of each?

I don't think they ever tell you to read a whole book, the suggested reading will usually cover the same things from class, just to a little more detail, Useful for study.
I had one class where it was full of required reading, we were told chapters of a book, or an article, and had to write notes on them, discuss them and do quizzes on them. This is fairly rare. We still didn't have to buy anything, there was about 20 copies of the book in the library, and all the articles were online.

Did anyone get anything from DCU at all yet - I haven't heard a thing about anything yet so just hoping my application didn't go through the system or something :o

    Hey guys,

Pete here, 27 years old and funnily enough it turns out that the first day of the actual course starting will be my birthday haha (27th!). Will probably celebrate it over the weekend leading up to it so i'll probably be in rag order for the first lecture. Going to be studying International Business and Japanese.

Returning to college after working for a large multinational for a few years and getting bored of looking at my career opportunities being pretty bleak since you can only get so far without a degree and I was at that point. It was either study a degree course in the evenings or stick at that and I decided to pack it in and return for a fresh start.

Anyway I think i've waffled enough, hope to see a few of you at either the Math's course from Monday on or at the mature orientation week where I can learn to use a pen and paper again :D

Dates when to register and pay.

You get your DCU email address.

Where to get your DCU student card.

Info about oreintation. Where to go etc. Timetable including knuts & bolts ball :confused:/Toga rave party+pub quiz/comedian+karaoke/oreintation ball.

Got my first piece of news in the post.

It was very detailed yet brief, gave me my student number, email address, online portal username and password, etc.

Told me what to do to get my student card too. You need to bring your fees receipt, photographic proof of ID and if you're in receipt of a Higher Education Grant, bring your letter of confirmation with you.
If you're liable to fees, it asks you to look up the DCU fees site.

And registration shall be taking place online, starting Wednesday 8th and finishing Friday 17th.

For interest of other postgraduate students, it also tells us about our orientation (Friday 24th, 2-5 PM in The Helix). However, we have to register online if we want to go, but as for now the link they gave is not in operation (as of yet).

    I'm Matthew,

I'll be studying Applied Physics next month in DCU.
I've my accommodation sorted in Shanowen Hall, which I hear is quite decent. :)

Really looking forward to starting up there! Anyone else doing that course, by the way?

For alot of first year it is a doss, you can get most of the stuff you need online. Then you'll find yourself ridiculously busy for 2 weeks before x-mas and then a couple of assignments due after x-mas. Some of the assignments can be tricky as its your first time writing stuff off the back of your own library research and ideas rather than being spoon fed in school, but you'll look back on the first few assignments soon and think they were easy. Be careful of the group assignments in certain modules, make sure you get in a decent group with no dossers, worth attending lectures if only for that!

First year can be pretty boring lecture-wise as you've no choice really & the practical stuff like radio and video only begins in 2nd year. It's more of a broad outline of everything, politics, sociology, media technology, web design each of which can be something like 2hrs in length, a real mixed bag, before narrowing down the next year. tbh it only gets real serious in 3rd year with the thesis etc.

First year is great though for meeting new people and getting to go out on a lot of mid-week nights out as attendence isnt mandatory for alot of the lectures, couldnt see myself making in for 9am after a night on the town. I made the mistake of hanging around with my own home friends alot in first year cause we're all local in dublin & went to DCU so didn't really become a proper part of things until 3rd year, had a few mates in the class, but didn't have too many options when it came to getting in the best groups for assignments etc.

I suppose you COULD spread the work out over the 12 weeks but most choose not to, good luck with it. 1st year college was prob one of the best years of my life, weds night out in XXI, breakfast roll in nu-bar thurs morning then onto 3e barcode thurs night....back when it used to be actually decent!

    Hey all the Communications newbies!

Now that you guys are here I'm a second year..yeoowww.

Just wanted to say that 1st year in communications was the best year of my life. Our year is filled with some of the nicest and crazy people I've ever met.

You don't need to go to all your lectures and some are terribly boring but the practical classes with Eoin Campbell are really good fun!

One piece of advice - Join MPS (Media Production Society). Get involved with DCUfm, that was the best thing I did last year. Made so many friends through it and the station had a great year. Can't wait for DCUfm this year!

So I'm soooo jealous you guys are CS1s, I'm sure I'll meet a lot of ye. Basically just enjoy the year.... we had the craic anyway :):)

Yeah DCUfm seems to have come on loads since i was starting CS, loads of new equipment since then, looks a great set-up in the studio now.

ah Eoin Campbell, as someone in my class described him....."he looks like
    Jesus....the carpenter years!"

Don't worry there are loads of nursing students, they just wouldn't be the greatest demographic group to be posting on an internet forum.

You see the forum, is full of people who like to talk ****e. So comminications, journalism etc are going to be better represented here.

It's the same with the SU and societies in gererall around DCU.
People doing science courses tend not to be the most popular forum users.
This is because many are quiet wierd indivuals. I once looked into the science building in DCU and I haven't been the same since.

    SLOBO
    xxx

That's harsh! I think the science board here might prove you wrong! :pac:

I opted out of the maths week, I don't think I need it, fingers crossed I don't regret that move!

I'll be at the mature students days though, looking forward to meeting other mature students & getting used to the place before it's jam packed a week later!
