Can't believe I don't know the answer to this.

Got my period yesterday (and have been on a 24 day cycle for several months now). Due to go away on 28th December so presuming another 24/25 day cycle, I'll get my next when I am away! :( Is there anything I can take to stop it just for that month? Or bring it on early so I at least have it before? Thanks!

There is medication you can take to delay your period - Norethisterone is commonly used.

Your GP should be able to prescribe it.

Hey everyone x So I'm reallly worried. My boyfriend and I have been together nearly 6 months and I think it's time that we did the deed so to speak. We are both ready and we have been talking about it for ages. I have been on the patch for 7 months and I have never had any problems with it but when I spoke to some family members about it I was told it's not effective and you could likely get pregnant:eek: I would like to have kids in the future but not now as I am too young and look forward going to college next year. Any advice??? Is the contraceptive patch very effective? and how likely are you to get pregnant on it? Thank you x

It’s 99% effective if properly used. Do you use it correctly? 1 patch per week for 3 wks and then a patch free week?

Doesn’t protect against stds, so condom might be an idea.

Ya I always use it correctly. We would be using a condom too just to be safe.

I've been using the patch for 11 or 12 years, it's been effective so far (touch wood). It's easy to use and I don't know why more women don't use it.

Hi, it's the first time I'm having a pill prescription in Ireland. The first 3 months run out now.
Does anyone know if after the 3 months I have to go back to the GP and have a consultancy just to get a new one?
Or could I ring and get a repeat one?

Just asking because I'll be ridiculously tight on money this month.

I just hated the black sticky border it left on my skin and having to plan my outfits a week in advance if I didn't want it showing

Definitely worth calling the GP to check if you can just get a repeat script anyway. They might just want to check your blood pressure but you can suggest that you get that done by the pharmacist

Thanks, I'll definitely give it a try. I moved house in the meantime and lost the original and when I rang to get a new one, the receptionist gave me some attitude. But I guess that's the receptionist.
50 Euro to get the blood pressure checked is a bit steep anyway.

Uh huh, private doctor fees are ridiculous in Ireland. I’m having some issues with side effects relating to my mirena but can’t afford a trip to the doc at the moment. Maybe after the next payday!

Whenever I have to go to the GP for something else, I get a pill prescription, even if I'm not running out for months. And in between, I use an online doc. I can get 6 months for €25. You can get your blood pressure taken for free in any pharmacy.

That's never happened to me, and I go to a practice where I see 5 or 6 different doctors. But if they did ask, I'd explain it was cost-efficiency reasons.

I have to go for a smear test. It's been five years since I last had it done and want to get it done before I start a prescription for the pill, which can make me bleed for the first few months and planning things will be difficult. So I have to bite the bullet and just get it done.

My GP isn't on the list of doctors that do smear tests. I think I heard somewhere that you can go anywhere. I tried to ring a different gp but their phones rang out so I can't make an appointment. Looking online, they do a walk in clinic and doesn't seem to go by appointments. So is it OK that I just show up?

Does anyone else notice their period brings about an urge to puke and feel like gagging and be nauseous with it for those few days?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,825 ✭✭✭LirW

Yes, I had that before I started with the progesteron only pill. But I mainly had this urge because my periods were so unbelievably painful that I was sick from it.

Does anyone know the risk factor of getting pregnant if someone has unprotected sex on day 10 of a 24/25 day cycle?

Depends when this person ovulates, if their luteal phase is closer to 14 days then very high, less so if it's closer to 10-12 days but sperm can live in the body for several days. It would be strongly advised that they get emergency contraception (whether the MAP or a copper coil insertion) if they are trying to avoid pregnancy.

    Ladies, I'm very confused.
I'll be moving to Ireland from Germany and have a copper IUD. Now it is recommended to do a check-up every 6 months which would include ultrasound. I've heard someone say that an ultra-sound would cost them about 120 plus 50 euro to get referred by the GP. That can't be right, can it?
Does it really cost that much? There's no way I can pay that kind of money for a simple check-up. Or are there any programs you can go on? Does anyone know anything?

Hi , just looking for little advice. I am currently overseas & will not be visiting Ireland until March.
My current pill, mini pill, cerazette is neatly gone. The country I am in seems to only have combined pill.
Would it be a big problem to use the combined for a few weeks? I would prefer not to, but it seems like the only option here......

Some GP's have ultrasound, so if you register with one that specialises in IUD/ family planning and has an ultrasound you might be able to get checked out on a normal appointment. You can ring around and find out their pricing before you sign up to them.

It depends why you are on the mini pill.

Im on it because the combined pill is a health risk for me (stroke risk). It can also be risky depending on weight, blood pressure, history etc...

So youd need to check with your doc. Cerazette isnt the only mini pill though - check out Azalia too.

Age etc, ocasional social smoker. Don't seem to do mini pill at all in this country!
I don't get periods at all now, & it's well settled, don't fancy messing up my system if I don't have to. I guess the combined pill would though...

Can you not do an online webdoctor consultation and then send the prescription to your regular chemist, and get a friend or family member to collect and post to you?

Ah, if only! Post is not reliable, May get it, May get it in 3 months!

    Great idea though!

I have been three weeks taking the mini pill cerazette. I'm not getting any side effects, so I'm worried it's not working. What are the chances of getting pregnant if someone had unprotected sex during the fertile period, roughly two weeks after the start of the period with a 28-30 day cycle.

    I think I might be peri-menopausal.
Should I go to the GP?
Is there anything I should do, or can do?

    Hi

Just wondering has anyone experienced regular spotting in between periods?. I've been tracking my periods / symptoms over the past few months as we are trying to conceive and have noticed I get slightly dark bloody mucus followed by pale pink discharge exactly 7 days before my period begins. Only noticeable when I wipe. Sorry for TMI!.Its not every month but the majority of them and nearly always at the same time - 1 week before period due. Periods are pretty much bang on give or take a day and have an average of 29 day cycle. Is the spotting something I should be concerned about or get checked out?
