So lads what the likelyhood of a display tonight!?

Going to head up to Sally's gap in Wicklow so it's pitch dark to have a look if there is any chance of some lights

We really need a geomagnetic activity of (Kp) 8 to get great views.

Dublin has a magnetic latitude of 50

It would be great at 8, but the storm last night peaked at 6 and was visible as far south as Germany.

Still at 4. I think the activity isnt due to increase until after midnight.

So after mid-nite is the main chance lads?

Goin up past dublin a.p , to high ground to get a clear view hopefully.

do you think it will be possible to see the lights from Dublin city? or will the light pollution be too bright here? i live in Dublin 14 and have a balcony so i'll be watching for any action :)

Okay I am gonna drive later for about an hour and a half to try and see these. Which direction would be good?

Up the M1 and head north?

    Anyone any other ideas?

Oisin did you see an estimate of when the second CME is due to arrive?
Im just guessing that since the A 30 watch is for tomorrow that it will be in the early hours of the morning.

Have an early start in the morning so I wont be up anyway!

Geophysical Activity Forecast: Geomagnetic field activity is
expected to be at unsettled to minor storm levels on day 1 (04
August) as the current CME passage continues. Activity is forecast
to increase to active to minor storm levels with a chance for major
storm levels on day 2 (05 August) due to the arrival of the halo-CME
observed on 01 August (associated with a large filament
disappearance). Activity is expected to decrease to unsettled to
active levels on day 3 (06 August) as CME effects subside.

Might be seeing a lot of solar activity - scientists are saying that they believe the sun is entering a phase of renewed activity sometime between 2011 and 2013.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

Doesnt look good if all this cloud that we see now is the very lightly shaded regions on this image.

Is there any point if the skies are clearish heading out to a high point in the Kilkenny area or are we too far South? :(

As of right now the storm is too weak to be seen anywhere on the Island, even if it wasn't cloudy. Early tomorrow (or late tonight depending on how you look at it) it may get stronger - possibly tomorrow evening.
Keep an eye on this thread for updates on strength... we want to see at least G2 grade, preferably G3 to see anything good.
