    Is it just getting worse?
How long do these usually last or is there any way of knowing?

That particular storm has passed now and we are back to a Kp index of 3. There is a second CME due today/tomorrow and a 35% chance of major geomagnetic storms.

The forecast is a bit better for looking at the sky tonight :
Clear spells tonight and some further scattered showers, mainly in west Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

Hope it gets clear tonight and we might see something..but the CT posts on youtube already is actually laughable more scare mongering over a few ionised atoms..bring on the lights tonight fingers crossed :)

Sorry, yeah, misread the chart. I hope it's not starting now unless it lasts until tonight.

Is it throughout the night tonight? Would it be worth going up to Mount Leinster , will this give me a better chance of seeing anything , I was thinking the extra altitude would let me see alot further north?

EDIT: OH NO! Just checked on sat 24 , large bank of cloud appraching from the atlantic. Suppose it is to be expected!

It seems like a situation of "only time will tell" for today. The large halo-CME isn't meant to hit until tomorrow (not sure of what time).
Keep an eye on this thread for when it starts getting dark, maquiladora and I have been keeping it updated at any event (upgrade or downgrade).
If it does hit a G2 storm this evening then it may well be worth heading somewhere above the cloud cover to see if you can spot any lights.
If we get to G3 I'd guess that we'd almost certainly get a good showing of the aurora throughout the whole country. (during G3 it is usually visible from 50degrees and above)

Semi-related information. We are getting absolutely smashed with electrons at the moment. In the last passover of the satellite readings over us were >100 keV Electrons (90° detector) but <300 keV - our yearly median is well under 30 keV.
Just goes to show how powerful these CMEs can be!

We may be due a similar event as 1859. All I know is, I don't want to be anywhere near an electrical source when it happens!

A few showers are still possible near north and west coasts, but otherwise the night will be dry with good clear spells.

    Fingers crossed.
