Ah you will, paper 2 saved us :)

Paper one was certainly tricky, that's the paper that could kick me.

What about points wise ? Assuming it jumps to 350, I think i'll get that anyway. Just gotta see how German and *shudder* Physics goes.

I did project maths paper 2.. was piss easy too :)

Points wise, not really worried about them just yet.. 370 in the mocks, expecting roughly the same in the real thing :)

Ah it was the opposite for us last year. Paper 1 was lovely, Paper 2 was horrifying!

And oh, forgot about the name change. Might want to rename the thread "...Computer Science and IT 2010/2011" or something.

I don't know if your lucky or not. I did the standard Maths cours, we weren't one of the pilot schools for 'Project Maths'.

    Title change activated !

Any paper 2 I have ever done has been piss easy. Anything that comes up you can work out in your head, like angles.

Paper 1 isn't like that, for example the two full questions on algebra which can go horribly wrong at any moment.

If you have done honours JC maths, then you are sorted for Paper 2 imo.

Haha, I didn't. I did Pass Maths since 2nd Year and still got into this course AND passed the Maths module!

And jaysus, Paper 2 in OL was terrible in 2009. Everyone said it; it had every "hard" question from the past six or seven years all in one booklet. I almost had a nervous breakdown after that exam.

I vaguely remember that! I had done paper 1 in like 35 mins and expected similar from paper 2, but I was in for over an hour, twas so much harder than previous years like! It was grand for people who dropped from honours or for people who were prepared for difficult maths but so many of the girls in my year came out very upset, just knowing they'd struggle to pass it!

They want 100 people next year, they got 49 this year. Last years points were 315. I imagine it'll drop, probably to ~305.

I really think they need to dump the B3 requirement for Pass Maths though. It should really be a C3. It's not a fair grade requirement.

I think by changing the name this year, more people will at least look into the course now because it has 'computer science' in its title..

Couldn't agree more, ciano. I still think lots of people are confused as to what "Information Technology" is...

"Jen, what does IT stand for?"

    Just saw some new news on the NUIG site and it doesn't bode well for hopeful CS&IT students;

"The latest figures also show a dramatic increase of more than 60% in first preference applications to the Computer Science and Information Technology programme at NUI Galway."

Damn that title change to hell !!

oh no... What does that mean for points?! (obv I know theyll rise) but 60% more?! Jesus wasnt at all worried bout the points till now

Nah, unlikely. I'm guessing similar points to last year now, so around 315.

Were all the course places filled last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭Columc

dont think it will rise or lower. The course has something along the lines of 100 places, but not even 50% of them were filled last year, but it stayed at 315. One thing you need to know about the CAO is that the points is determined by the alst peson entering the course. In theory if someone last year got the bear minimum required grades in subjects to enter the course (i think its roughly 275-285) then the points would be that low.

One of my friends few years ago got into this course, He got 460 points in the leaving cert and when he saw the points for the course it was 460 and he was delighted that he scraped in. Turns out there was only 6 people in the course all of them whom got higher then him in the leaving cert but since he was the person with the lowest amount of point in the group that course points were determined by him.

So My advice is dont worry, if you think you got better then a B3 in ordinary maths and got the university requirements(english, irish, european language and 2 C3+ in higher level) you got into the course.

So in theory any course that isnt filled with places really dont have a point barrier to them. If you have the requirements determined by the course you should get in

As Colum said, they only got 49% of the numbers they wanted last year :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭barry181091

So, I could get 150 points and still get in ? Assuming I got all of the requirements.

    I don't know, sounds dodgy :D

    Technically yes.

You need a pass in at least six subjects in accordance with College requirements with:
    • at least Grade C3 in two subjects on the Higher course and
    • at least Grade D3 (Ordinary or Higher course) in the remaining four subjects.
These are the requirements for entry into the university. Then you also have the Course requirements such as the minimum of a B3 in ordinary level Maths

    35+60+60+5+5+5=170 points

Now saying that tho, depending on the course the Course Director can make up his own cut off point for points. Some Course Directors do it some dont. I know for my course they allowed in everyone that applied that got requirements needed the year i joined.

Course Directors need to take into account of the pass fail rate of the diffrent years also. So they might want a cut off point of 290. I know for my course they bade a mistake eltting them all in for my year, one of the lectures even said it, cause for that year there was a 90% fail rate of exams with people having to repeat with 15% of the students failing upto 5 out of the 6 subjects. and from that 90% only 40% of them went into second year.

I get what your saying and it makes sense, but I cant imagine you could be that far off the points and get in..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭Columc

Aye, Of course with someone with that low amount of points the course director can get the final say ion letting them in or not.

But in theory that person is fulfilling the minimum requirements to enter NUIG and the minimum requirements to the Course. And this is also implying that they have the course as number 1 on their CAO forms and the course is not full
