I don't know many saddle makers or coblers :D
I prefer to ride bareback :D Horses that is, ah only kidding!

I habe a few fallow antlers for a handle, the blades look small though 4-5"

Maybe your Aussie friends knife would suit me better at €170 ~

I will make a knife though, I've been thinking about if for around 11 years now, still need to find the perfect blade

That Brisa website looks good. I've been looking at it recently and I was thinking of ordering some bits and bobs to make a couple of scandi style knives since my first attempt to make a knife out of scrap that was lying around proved successful.

Its good fun...I was mad into it last year but lost the motivation...
Reading these posts has sparked up an interest again though....

There is a good forum that has some very good tutorials here

I know a lad in the UK that does heat treating(15 pound/blade +postage) if you want to make the blade from scratch and I have the number of a supplier here in Eire that can get bars of 01 carbon steel if your interested

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭Hibrion

Sure PM me the numbers if you don't mind. Think I'll try one with a blade blank first to get my bearings. I'll also need to buy a few more tools before I attempt to make a proper blade.

Have you tried making a kydex sheath? Much easier than leather in my opinion. You can get sheets of it in any colour off ebay.

From were the antler leaves the scull up to the first prong is a perfect ergo shape and very nice colour etc

Photo is poor, new camera on the way!

I decided to take the camera out and take some pictures of a select few from the collection.
The dodgy looking one below is my first attempt at making a knife. Made from a broken knife, a broken cleaning rod and a broken chopping board with a paracord lanyard attached in a futile attempt to make it look something.:D
    ssl22455.th.jpg

Next is my gransfors bruks small forest axe, my new buck 110 that came yesterday complete with handmade leather sheath. Last and definitely not least, my Davy Moore Sealgaire in wych elm and damasteel with brass fittings.
    ssl22434.th.jpg

This one is my carbon steel Mora clipper. It's an awesome knife. Cheap, durable and very sharp.
    ssl22490.th.jpg

ps- I tried to make the pictures a bit more interesting with the few random bits thrown in.
Also, how do you guys get the big pictures in your posts?

    Any bowie knife fans here?

I use photobucket to host the pics, size them there and just copy the img link bit over here.

Brisa are often recommended on British Blades as well for kits and materials, good stuff. Per in the good stuff shop usually gets a mention also.

Hibrion, nice looking knife for a first go! I like the Granny B SFA as well. I got a Roselli camping axe lately but still...:D

For traditional knives I like the looks of leather but kydex is just so handy and doesn't rot or mildew. I last got kydex from Mashed Cat outfitters, but there is a lad over on British Blades does a lot of it as well.

I'd like a kydex and teklok sheath for my Moras.

Tack, if your going to use antler you're probably looking at making a stick tang style knife.
See the Sami type Leuku for example.
Nothing wrong with them and they are supposed to absorb shock, not pass it on to you, better than full tangs. I have a Golok and Leuku in that style and never a bother chopping with them. Traditional bowies were generally hidden tang as well, I can only think of one offhand that I've seen that wasn't.

    You might like ...

    J. H/ Callega dogbone bowie (Bagwell style)

    J. Neilson, lovely hamon on this one

    bowie%20mississippi%20W2-stag-wi-mosaic.jpg

    Eastvillage knives, Cubereaction on BB.

In fairness though, the knife most likely used by Jim Bowie at the Sandbar Duel was this one, which looks nothing like what we call "Bowie knife".

Bowies are lovely to look at but I find I have no use for them. I only require a small knife for hunting or fishing and the same for camping as I bring along my axe. I have one or two large knives but they are only for looking at really.

I like a good axe, Gerber make a great one.

But I prefer a bowie, not expecting others to.
I have used my swiss army more often than any knife, I just want a Bowie.

I have a machete I bring camping and some guys bring a saw, I have a saw too but I prefer a good knife.

Can a guy not have his Ultimate knife?
I always carry at least 3 out hunting, in case I lose one in a bog hole etc.

I'm not saying you can't. I have bigger knives and a machete but I just don't use them. But, by all means get your ultimate knife:).

If you are on your own a machete can be handy to top nettles briars etc.

I have used my bowie for same.
I'm not a fan of nettles:(

Would you consider making a knife

Who to make a sheath though. Mcbride has a lovely bowie (cold steel0 But it needs a special belt.

It has a brass thingy that fits on to a belt.

    I'd make a knife.

I have the Antler for handle, I can buy a blade for around €30, it's the leather sheath I can't get

I'm just wondering what hunters use as their knife of choice. I have a small collection of knives. I found this one this morning on E-bay. Possibly my next purchase.

So folks for gutting or skinning what is your favorite knife?

Look at the work of Rory O Connor.
    He is in Ballylickie
    Bantry
    Co Cork
    027 50032
He made me a hunting knife, one that is part of his collection, a beautiful knife, €150, well worth the price.
Look into www.craftshopbantry.com and you will get a link to his work.
