I'd be very surprised if Sky launch any Saorview channels.

I wonder what about C4 maybe and other channels with Irish ad's ... Dave, E4, Comedy Central etc.... would be relatively cheap for them and increase viewership no doubt.

    They already get plenty.

UKTV - largely pay TV (some FreeView)
    Viacom - pay only
Channel 4 - Free (4music not available on Sat is all)
Sky - I often wonder if they are serious about their Free Channels even now that they have a new look.

Of all the stations out there, I always thought that C4 would be the one to go onto Saorview. In fact UTV did what I thought C4 would do, and they still might. C4 and E4 have an audience that advertisers like. the 3e idea was a direct rip off of E4. The real thing would do well on a limited platform like Saorview.

Sky have no need for a free channel on Saorview, They have almost everyone they want signed up to the service. It's a very mature market in the republic, it's more about hanging on to what they have at this stage. It took a long time for SKY in the UK to get accepted by the middle classes, it never really had that problem here.

If the UK channels wanted to be seen here they would simply allow Freesat boxes on the Irish market.

C4 may not be allowed to pay for carriage outside UK. They are a sort of UK PSB (a kind of commercial version of BBC), unlike Channel 5 and ITV.

Actually it was for that reason I thought and still think that Channel 4 would do something in the future. They're the one UK terrestrial broadcaster that has embraced the Irish Market. UTV have always sold advertising in the South but they've never done anything extra until now.

Channel 4 on the other hand have actual version of Channel 4 and E4 for the Irish republic. They also allow access to their 4OD service, All the other UK traditional broadcasters block their video services. It would be purely a commercial decision for them, Is it worth their while to go on Saorview?

At the same time would they actually be left on Saorview? Just rebroadcasting what they have wouldn't be enough. That's why UTV Ireland was welcomed with open arms. The promise of A new news service and 100 jobs will open a lot of doors quickly.

UTV sold ROI advertising discreetly (It was sold along with NI advertising) made a fortune in the early 1990s when Ray Burke put limits on RTÉ advertising.

Channel 4 may have also done this as AFAIK ITV sold its advertising for each region <<<< someone might know more about this.

UTV didn't have the competition as RTÉ had. UTV pretty much had a monopoly in the North for advertising. I think they are worried about multichannel homes in the north moving as they get used to FreeView.

Anyone know how many NI viewers still had to switch to FreeView before DSO? I Think Pay TV was only at around 50%?

Since 2002 UTV have drop from 10% to 3% in 2012 in ROI!!!!!

There was nothing Discrete about UTV selling adverts to the republic in the 90's, They had agents, reps and a sales office in Dublin. They had been pitching their station at Ad agencies in Dublin since the 70's but it was really in the eighties when southern revenues started to come in.

It was an important part of their Income probably up to 2003 just as their reach in the south started to really fall. Going into other areas of the media such as Radio and the internet was a smart move. They're a proper media company at this stage, unlike TV3 which are just about a TV station.

This is another good move if they get the licence from the BAI (I presume they will) They reopen an old market, they almost automatically get 12 or 13 percent market share because of the soaps and they can cross promote their radio and Internet businesses, and anything else they can come up with.

Don't forget that UTV always had a tough time with it's core audience, neither side likes change. When I was above in the North at College in the mid 90's I used to get complaints from both sides that there were too many Ads aimed at the south or that BBC Northern Ireland was ignoring it's remit by covering too many stories from Dublin. The only News stories Hard core Unionists didn't have a problem with were from Donegal.

So loads of money to be made from a state without a commercial broadcaster but at the same time you couldn't really acknowledge their existence. This Ident in 2001 was intended to make UTV a little more attractive to southern Audiences especially in Dublin where they always had a core viewership. There were more than a few grumbles.

In fairness it was really bad on the Six O'Clock news

(actually the 6:01 news and some people get completely unhinged over that)

They'd list the main stories "Cure for Cancer, World Peace, Martian Invasion, but first Today in Northern Ireland ... "

They'd all happen in NI and you'd still get someone on here giving out about those NI stories.

... and its the SIX ONE NEWS

I thought the One in Six One was that the programme went out at one minute past six, after the Angelus.

According to a friend who works in the Tv trade said to me that the RTE One +1 channel is to become HD on Saorview whenever the main channel's HD launch happens.

That would mean RTÉjr HD also, same stream. So why haven't they done it already like RTÉ1 HD, they are all on Mux2 with spare capacity?

I just rolling my eyes at the idea of a +1 service in HD, and the fact that TG4 and TV3 have yet to go HD. Hopefully its not true.

That's a matter for two independent companies though. More HD the better.

    /pokes TV3 with a sharp stick.

I'd rather they would make it 24 hours or at the least until end of programming , instead of cutting it off if the programmes starts after 1am at present , before making it HD .

Anyway doesn't matter supposed to close in 2014 :pac:

Isn't it supposed to be closing in February 2014? Why bother to make it HD when it's gonna close anyway?

+1 HD channels are coming. Channel 4 are launching Channel 4+1 HD and 4Seven HD in 2014 too. RTÉ ONE+1 HD isn't that far fetched, if it wasn't for the limited broadcasting hours and that little matter of it closing down in 3 months...

What's the plan then after Feb? Do we get RTÉ Plus or is there something else in the pipeline?

There is no requirement for the channel to close in Feb 2014 (or 2015 depending on which way you read the decision). The decision only says this phase has been granted approval for 4 years.

RTÉjr/RTÉ1+1/RTÉ News Now have to be reviewed by Feb 2014 and a report submitted to the Minster by next June who will decide the future of these channels which could include a change of format for RTÉ1+1 or extended hours etc. etc.
RTÉ Plus: Phase 1 only is approved and for a period of 4 years only until
    February 2014.
All the approved services and channels shall be reviewed by RTÉ within 4 years
(i.e. no later than February 2014) and a report on these reviews shall be submitted
to the Minister by June 2014 at the latest. This review shall, interalia, study the
continuing need for these services and channels in light of technology and societal
developments and the potential for enhancing the public service value of these
    services and channels.

Either way it is a waste of time. Just after a 5 year report, consultations into the Licence Fee, the BAI's strategic review, the examination into commerical muxs etc etc.

What happens after the report in June does the Minister decide to close RTÉ ONE +1???? It is just a waste of time. 5 months to submit a report? seriously.
