Deschutes Black Butte Porter well it was served very cold so had to leave it a bit to warm up. Lovely roast malt ,hint of coffee and chocolate too but just enough not to be overpowering.
Up there with one of the better porters.

How was it, I read somewhere that it won a blind taste of the top 20 Pale Ales in America

Its a very good beer, it touches the IPA category a little too much, its 6.5%, hazy golden/orange, full malty body with a little sweetness and then heavy bitterness, not the citrusy hops you'd expect but not exactly grapefruit, its just quite bitter. I like it but it dosn't scratch the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale itch I've had since coming here, infact I'd compare it to the Torpedo quicker if I had to call it. I like it but am yet to find a staple pale ale here but this is a good go to second choice.

They've only started to bring in the pale ale, I was lucky enough to get a can of their Gubna IPA a year or two ago, which was great, but hopefully I'll get to try more of their stuff.

Can you not get SN in Canada?

Not in Alberta, most of the US stuff makes to Ireland before here, forget SN, Odells, anything good by Anchor (except Brekles Brown), Great Divide, Goose Island, Flying Dog etc that we get at home but won't get here. We get Deschutes and Tamarack, Rogue, Southern Tier, Lost Coast, Ruckus and a sprinkle of others but the selection of US beer here is pretty poor (I'll trade yous any 2 for Odells). I was chatting to a beer importer/supplier recently who has secured Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head contracts but thinks he may not have the beer on sale until 2014.

When US visitors come into the bar they can't believe we get all that stuff in Ireland and are always very pleased to know people drink it. Had an Ozzie in who was over the moon to hear how much I'd enjoyed Little Creatures Pale Ale when I tried it.

I actually want to try a little creafures. That sucks about the rest, can you get it delivered.

Its great, not as hoppy as SN Pale Ale but along the same lines if I remember correctly. I doubt it would be worth the cost tbh, also they have some great Canadian alternatives, Flying Monkey, Philips, Paddock Wood etc. As I said SN and Dogfish will be here in 2014.

Yeh! Funny thing is its not that their not here due to lack of demand, the average Canadian would know a good bit more about craft beer then regular Paddy at home. I think they just have difficulty getting it in, there also seems to be alot of red tape around producing and moving around alcohol in Alberta.

Sarcasm? Genuine concern? Either way

I tried the Kinnegar Scraggy Bay IPA http://kinnegarbrewing.ie/beers/ via McHugh's and really enjoyed it. Lovely citrus/pine aroma and nice carbonation too to make it go down easy. Looking forward to trying their other beers too.

Laughing Sun Brewery -Bismarck , North Dakota on draught.

Black Shox Porter - lovely roasted malt but a major coffee kick also. There is also a nice tiny hop kick at the end. Could not have more than 1 but I really enjoyed it.

Feast Like a Sultan IPA a nice fresh smell of fruit and nicely rounded of with a bitter grapefuit taste. Not too strong in flavour but just right.

What's the general consensus about Delirium Tremens?

I remember trying it when I was 18 or 19 and hating it, but all I could drink at that stage was Bulmers anyway. :o

    Haven't tried it yet.

Tried the Cavee des Trolls and Val- Dieu, both blondes, both meh.

    Will try DT next.

I find it strange tbh, prefer Nocturnum.

I haven't tried it yet, but I did buy a bottle of it along with the Nocturum with my last Drinkstore order.

I'd also imagine I wouldn't have liked it (along with every other beer I like now) when I was 18 or 19 ;)

How much was it for Nocturnum? picked up one and a red today.

    Delirium Nocturnum. 8.5% Vol.

    deliriumnocturnum.jpg

Dark coloured beer, very slight head. Bitter sweet to the taste with an almost distant after taste.

I like it. Not sure I could drink it all night but would have a few anyway.

    Worth a try.

    7/10
