I'm in Catalonia at the moment. I spent a couple of months here a few years ago and tried the most popular macro beer, Estrella Damm, which is a typically bland Euro lager. Anyhow, I was surprised to discover a brand of beer, Moritz, which I had missed before.

Shockingly, it's a pale lager. I was unaware that Spanish macros were capable of producing anything other than the usual foamy, bubbly filth that I've become used to. It seems to have a much more limited distribution than most other brand but the product is slightly superior.

The taste is quite sweet with a tiny hop kick at the end and a slight hint of spice. Nothing special of course but it's a decent alternative to regular Spanish beer.

I also managed to get myself a couple of Sierra Nevada Pale Ales in a bar last night. I have no idea how much they cost since I wasn't paying (wedding reception) but I imagine that the children of whoever paid will be going hungry tonight.

If you can find it check out Moritz Epidor, best described as a Bock.

Pours a darkish orange with an off-white head, caramel & malts & a subtle citrus aroma from the hops.

The strong malt character dominates the flavour although it finishes quite dry with pleasant hop bitterness...ABV 7.2%

Keep an eye out for Magic Rock Cannonball, some serious grapefruit smell/taste in that.

Euston Tap is another good place to check out in London, its right beside the metro line which is pretty handy.

Some hops have a distinct grapefruit aroma and flavour.

Had a bottle of Sierra Nevada Summerfest earlier... a bit "meh"

Now tucking into my current favourite - Dungarvan Black Rock Stout. :)

Wasn't overly impressed with Sierra Nevada Summerfest, but a couple of bottles of the Goose Island Summertime later I was over the disappointment.

The Ahtanum, I'd say. With a bitterness contribution from the Chinook.

Tried the Brewdog/Mikkeller collaboration I Hardcore You.
Maybe my expectations were a bit high but I was left a bit cold by it!
Just seemed like a slightly maltier version of Hardcore to me.
I haven't been overly impressed by the Mikkeller beers I've tried to be honest - apart from Texas Ranger which I really liked.

You may be on your own there, the I hardcore you is an pretty good IIPA, one of the better beers ever released (By mikkeller), though I don't know how huge you are on IPAs so it could be that it is too strong in the IBUs for your palette.

I'd agree with him, as an Imperial IPA it's good, but not much different to Hardcore which is nice anyway.

I love IPA's and I wouldn't call I hardcore you one of the best I've had, it's nice but it's not amazing.

I've genuinely disliked just about everything I've tried from Mikkeller though , ESPECIALLY Texas Ranger, I thought it was foul. So I was surprised I actually liked I Hardcore You.

I don't think as an Imperial IPA it's anywhere near stuff like Dogfish Head 90 minute or Odell's Myrcenary.

I still think ODell IPA is the best IPA type drink I've had so far, such an impressive beer.

Well maybe saying the best is a bit much, but I definitely liked it, you can definitely get the Hardcore off it but it is better in my opinion. I haven't had many from Mikkeller, though the ones I have had I have liked, nothing amazing but their coffee stout was good Jackie Brown I think the name was.

Haven't tried the Jackie Brown yet but I hear good things.

I actually didn't dislike the I Beat you to be fair, it was just nothing I'd get excited about.

Like I said, I don't hate I hardcore you, I'd just rather a glass of normal Hardcore, or even better, a pint of Punk.

Then again, if we all liked the same stuff, this forum would be a very boring place!

I agree with this opinion too. Reminded me of a slightly nicer version of Hardcore, but not warranting the extra euro it costs. I've liked all of Mikkeller's beers so far, with the exception of Jackie Brown. Would like to get my hands on more of their IPA beers.

I like ODells but wouldn't be up there in my list of favourite IPA's, I wasn't blown away by their IIPA(Myrcenary) either. I had their IPA on tap before and was disappointed too :(

Yah sure it's good. Like others here I just wasn't blown away by it - too like Hardcore. I just don't really 'get' Mikkeller. I haven't disliked any of them, IIRC, but for me they don't warrant their higher cost over comparable beers. I don't think I've ever gone back to buy a second one of any of his beers.

had my first pints of metalman over the weekend. excellent beer. Definately the nicest of the irish beers i've tried, pity it cannot be bought in off licenses.

I think Metalman has improved recently - it's much nicer now than I remember it being before.

They had to change hops in the last year or so and I think it's better too.

Mikkeller is definitely hit and miss, but at least not boring.

Their Beer Geek Brunch Weasel is the best imperial stout I've ever had.

I have serious reservations about drinking anything that includes coffee beans that have passed through the arsehole of a civet as one of the ingredients.

Because you think there will be poop in it even after the manufacturing process?

If you have the chance of getting BGBW, you'll be missing out. So good.

Have a nice hoppy selection for myself tonight.

One each of Seirra Nevada Celebration and Torpedo and a Goose Island IPA.

Currently sipping the Celebration, might not be winter but it feels like it!

    Decent value, that.

I drink a Chinese beer called Xinjiang Black Beer over here. It's very hoppy, but delicious. Costs around 50-60 cent a bottle.

had Green King IPA last night, bought it in McHughs - wasnt blown away by it.
Followed it up with a bottle of Anchor Steam which i found only slightly better.

i find the more i'm enjoying the likes of Metalman, GH & brewdog the less interested i'm finding more bland beers.
