At the end of the day, its the people you are with and the craic you are having that determine the quality of your night out, not specifically the venue.
Still no word on the bowery anyone?

I think this is much more important then people realise. The right group in good mood can have a the best night of the year in any venue in town.

In fairness it's not as if we're bashing it to everyone in Ireland. All city and county forums on boards have discussions similar to ours.

The waterford you were in 9 years ago was a lot more vibrant than the waterford that we live in at the moment. But of course, that's true of all towns, villages and cities.

So Abouttobebanned - is there any point in me taking a visit back then???

Its definitely worth a visit. Firstly Waterford has the cheapest hotel rates in Western Europe, and the hotels are fairly decent.

2nd, due to the recession and Tweedy losing his grip on the local market, its fiercely competitive here. Some places are doing drinks for as low as €2.50, and lots of places have live bands on, and cover charges are very rare.

Popped into Shortts for a look last night. Bar looks superb. I always liked Ulysses so I hope it works.

Ya word is it looks great. Is that the cocktail part ya?

I went to the Uluru last night for a few pints. They had a "free" BBQ going (free burger with a pint) and it was one of the better nights I had in there. Decent crowd and good music.

Popped into Shortts meself. Looks pretty nice. The entrance part is just empty, could do with throwing something in there. Apart from that it's pretty nice looking. Lots more tables and chairs, and the tables are all chest height.

Is the old Strip Club part of Elec ave opened back up again to the stairs going up to teh main part , or is it a seperate small bar now?

Is the Strip Club going to be opening up again?
I feel that they should open it, but they should make it more accessible to the gay community. Its not fair that straight men were the only ones to have raunchy nights out on the town without going for it in a smelly toilet

Strip Club part is just the entrance to the bar now.

I would make a joke about maybe leaving one of the strippers there for when yer walking in, but I saw the women they had in there when it was open.

    No thanks.

One thing actually, I think Shortts is a great name for a bar compared to the awful club name.

Strip club is gone. It was the size of a shed anyway.
It's perfectly fair. Wasn't there already a gay stripclub up in Ballybricken? Can't remember the name.

I think we have a Troll in our midst.

I agree about the entrance. Could definitely do with some couches or something

I don't like the idea of any strip club. They are sleazy, and Waterford is too small to absorb the sleaze. Anyway, some of the prettiest girls I've seen have been working in the shops around waterford.

(I'd love to start a thread 'nicest lacks in waterford' about what shops and bars have the best talent, but if its nots against forum rules it should be :( )

I'm looking forward to giving Shortts a go. I liked Ulysses, plenty of space to sit down. I just hope they don't have a waterfall jacks though.

I think we have a Troll in our midst.

    Isn't 22Elbows Elbows22?

    +1.
I remember going into the one that was down by city square for a mates 20th a few years ago, think it was called secrets, and i never felt so uncomfortable in my life. it felt like it was being run by the mafia or something. bug burly men walking around in suits, and one of the dancers started grinding up against my mate for about a minute and then started demanding 50 quid off him.
needless to say we were gone like a shot.

I was driving in the to town center last night and spotted what looks like a new bar passed revolution, anyone know the name? It was green, im not from waterford but usually go out there if im heading out for the so i wont get a chance to pass through to see it again for a while!

^ that's More Irish stripclubs I'd say. To put it in perspective. I went to a stag in the UK in Birmingham (which would be one of the more seedy cities) and into a stripclub that was widely regarded online as the doggiest in the city and it was grand like a nightclub and not one bit intimidating or anything and the girls wouldn't push on ya or anything.

You'd know by looking at any of the places that opened in town that they were dodgy out

from now on unless im in vegas i think i'll avoid them all :D

is shortts in where the gentlemans club and where the electric avenue stage was? i was very fond of that place. such a shame it closed down. i hope they eventually provide another place for original waterford bands to play

Do people go out and see original bands? I hear people asking for them but when theyre on people usually just get bored cause they don't know any of the songs.

I personally would NEVER go see an original band. I could go see the best band ever and I'd be bored shítless if I didn't know their stuff.

I likely live, and new, music but I wouldn't spend an entire evening listening to new stuff.

I'd much prefer covers, and every 3 or 4 songs original stuff.

If i hear of an original band playing in say murphys, i'll go on to facebook and check out some of their stuff. if i like it i'll head down for the night.
love listening to new music, especially from waterford bands. One day i decided to randomly pop on down to a gig from a band i had never heard of, called O Emperor. They are now one of my favourite bands

And if you owned a bar...how many people in Waterford would you expect to do the same?

Definitely agree with this - both parts.

Ah Elbows22 may be all elbows, but he's not a troll. :p

I think it depends on the venue and it's typical customer base. People who go into the Kazbar for example on a Friday or Saturday night aren't going to want to see an original band. Whereas in Murphy's, it would go down very well. I saw Kodakid in Murphy's a couple of weeks ago and there was a good crowd in there (not hard I know!) and Propeller Palms in the Front Lounge - also a good crowd. These were Thursday nights too.

Yes, on specialised nights, midweek, when you have nothing to lose...they're fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,542 ✭✭✭dayshah

Regarding new live bands, it depends on if I'm expected to listen to them.

In a big place, if I didn't like a band I needn't pay any attention, just have a conversation with my friends. If it were a small place I'd feel I was being rude by not paying attention to the band, and would be more inclined to get bored and leave.

True. Anyone who publicises the recipe for Skittles Cocktails is worth of honour and respect :)

I have to say that I love going out to hear new music, be it a rock band or an electronic music producer. I've been to a few gigs down in Murphys and Sals and enjoyed them all. Beyond that I've found going out to gigs in Waterford pretty hit and miss over the years in terms of how the public support new music. Looking back to bands like Ash, The Devlins and even last week And So I Watch You From Afar playing Waterford and not filling the place when they'd sell out larger venues elsewhere. Funny place for new music. Even as an electronic music producer I'd very seldom play Waterford for that very reason.

btw, was at a super techno session down in the showboat last sat night before scooting over to ASIWYFA in the Forum
