    Hi Johnny.

The main thing that they focus on is their own teaching methods and system (the points system). So make sure that you're fairly familiar with that. Have a thorough read through both of the information sheets that they should have emailed you with because the majority of the questions they ask will be based on the information which is contained in these.
The types of questions they will ask will be mainly about your understanding of the culture in the gulf, what you could bring to their schools (extracurricular activities such as sports, music or whatever may be applicable to you), the student life organisation, how you would handle a large group of children, discipline and also why you want the position.
The interviewers are generally very friendly and are not out to catch you out, but rather just want to ensure that you do have some knowledge of the system. Make sure that you project your enthusiasm for a teaching position very well too as that's very important.
You'll be fine, no need to worry too much about it!

Best of luck with it! :)

Thanks for that. Could someone send me on the link for the page with the information sheets. I clicked the link I was emailed but it asks me for login details and a password. I never signed up and it doesnt provide an option. The link I have is from November

Anybody get a place in Ruwais or anybody been there? Got offered a place there starting in August. Any other Irish people there or going there?

I'm so delighted I found this thread! I saw jobs advertised for SABIS and decided to go for it but was nearly sick with nerves at the thought of going somewhere and knowing no one and adapting to a new culture. I have my telephone interview tomorrow morning - so I presume there will be a face to face one after that? I'm from Belfast, but i'm not sure where I'd need to travel for the interview; maybe Dublin. I have a Master's degree in music and so I'm opting for music teacher - so I think i'd be going for a specialist role. Do you actually choose where you'd like to teach? I was considering Lebanon, for it's mixture in culture and slightly more laid back laws. Dubai also seems nice.

Lots of Irish there, especially an older group of about 24+. It's a bit remote but you'd still be able to head to Abu Dhabi for nights out, and even Dubai the odd time with gangs of people even though its about 4 hours away. I've a friend there that loves it. Haven't been, but its supposed to be relaxed and nice. Dubai can be a bit crazy at times, constantly busy and buzzing.

Hey, Hope the interview goes well for you, its very relaxed as you can see from the previous thread. Yeah I was called for interview anyways after the phone interview but it depends when you want to start really and how quickly they would want you. One of my friends just had two phone interviews before she got her job. I'm not sure where they will hold the face to face for you possibly Dublin I had mine in Limerick, but they will let you know at the end of the phone call. During the phone interview they will ask for you preferences, and you will be asked again at the face to face to give three. Dubai is one of the most popular places, but I think you would have a great chance in the Lebanon. On the application form it asks what you would like to teach but in the face to face they will go through this in more detail with you. Hope this helps, all the best.:pac:

    Hi guys,

I'm not sure if I am going about this the right way. I registered with the sabis careers website and uploaded my CV and applied for a few jobs. Is this what the majority of people are doing? I hope to hear something back.

I have an undergrad and postgrad and volunteered with Childline for 2 years so hoping that might help.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

You can get the form online http://www.garda.ie/Documents/User/Data%20Protection%20F20%20-%20Nov%2012.pdf print it, and post it to Thurles! That's what I did and it was fine!

  • Registered Users Posts: 340 ✭✭Johnnythefox4

I'm in Ruwais now working for Sabis. If I'm honest Ruwais as a place is pretty bad, remote and out of the way. But its basically what you make of it. Theres a good crowd of people here and we have good craic. The age group is between 20-25, loads of Irish too, mostly Irish. Its only 2 and a half hours from Abu Dhabi. If you could get somewhere else then do but if you really wanna go the UAE then Ruwais isnt the absolute end of the world. Its a class opportunity to travel too.

Its safe like so you'll be fine. If your in Ruwais the conditions are grand for girls...they live in a brand new single fully furnished apartment in a womans only people with security so overly protected. The lads live in houses, 3 per house. The houses are old enough, need to be fixed up to be honest but their not the end of the world. The salary is grand, not the best but when you add in the bills and all being paid then its grand. Plus its a cheap enough place to live so your salary gets you a long way. Over all its not the best place in the world but its not the worst. If I could go back in time and know what I know now about Ruwais and where I'd be living then I'd still come again. Its basically what you make it, you can come to Ruwais and have a class time, epic weekends or you can come and be miserable. . . could always come and leave if your not happy too, always an option!

I was told that there was going to be face to face interviews at the end of this month. Has anyone else heard anything or been called for an interview?

  • Registered Users Posts: 48 craftynici

Had interview in Limerick early March. To be honest, you've got nothing to worry about. Was interviewed by Sean Cooney, such a lovely man! Was interviewed along with two other applicants. He just asked us general questions like....what we could bring to the schools, what our thoughts were on relocating to a some-what strict part of the world. It was a very causual interview to be fair!!

He did ask us to name three regions where we would like to be based...now I had no idea where I wanted to go but he was very helpful and explained what areas have the largest schools etc.

Everyone who had an interview on the same day as myself was offered a position and was told to think about it for 24hrs before signing the contract or you could sign the contract there and then!!

All in all, you've got nothing to worry about!! Best of luck with your interview :)

I haven't actually been called for a face to face interview yet. I had my phone interview over two weeks ago and was told that face to face interviews would be taking place at the end of this month. They haven't emailed me since the phone interview to say whether I made it through or not, so I was wondering if anyone else had been called for a face to face interview. Thanks for the above info though.

Im still waiting to get my Garda clearance form, so I haven't sent off all the required documents to Sabis. I was just wondering do you have to have all the documents sent off to get called for a face to face interview or will they call you for the interview even if you haven't sent off the documents?

I think they do like to have all documentation before confirming a face to face interview. As long as you have the main documentation such as scanned passport, degree, and CV video I'm sure you'll get info about your face to face interview. If not, they will email you notifying you about what they need to proceed with your application!!

My phone interview went well and my references have already been contacted. I mentioned Lebanon but I was told that they are looking for teachers in Bahrain, Oman and Qatar. I hear Oman is beautiful but none of those destinations massively appeal to me!

Bahrain is fine, don't believe what you are seeing on the BBC. I'm here four years and I'm quite disgusted about the misreporting of the BBC. Totally inaccurate. Sure, there are issues, but not to the extent the media would have you believe. And certainly nothing to be worried about as a Westerner, we are very well respected here.

I know of the school in Bahrain that you are talking about, it is in a nice area (Amwaj). PM me for details on the school itself, lots of Irish people working there and elsewhere in Bahrain.

Also, Bahrain has possibly the best social scene in any of the Middle Eastern countries you mention, plenty of pubs and clubs, if that is your thing. A pint is actually cheaper than some pubs in Dublin, no restrictions on women or anything like that, great GAA club/rugby club also.

    Hi there,

Glad that i happened to come across this when looking for something else - Must be Fate!
I am a final year Science student and about a month ago i was planning on applying to SABIS for a teaching job in Dubai.
One of the main reasons is for experience but also to earn more money than i am presently, before the H-dip and also just a year out.
I understand that flights accommodation are covered and pay is tax free but is it worth it ? What is the rate roughly per hour ? I would need to be saving money while over there.
I am a female and was planning to head over on my own but my parents weren't to happy and concerned that i would be on my own and also that i wouldn't get all that i would be promised.

Anyone have any reviews from recent good or bad ? The pay, the lifestyle ?
    Much appreciated

Its been 3 weeks since my phone interview and I still haven't heard anything about a face to face interview. I sent of my documents on Saturday but still no email. Is this normal or is it more then likely that I'm not going to get a face to face interview? I've already emailed them a few times but got an email Sunday saying "Please keep posted for further updates". Has anyone been emailed about a face to face interview? Getting kind of worried.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 lulavenus

Haven't been contacted about a face to face interview but I still need to get police clearance. I know they've contacted my references. Did you specify dubai? Because from what I can gather they are looking for teachers in other parts of the emirates.

  • Registered Users Posts: 340 ✭✭Johnnythefox4

No I didn't specify UAE. I put it down as my number 1 choice but had qatar and Oman as 2 and 3. I'm still waiting for the clearance form as well.

Hey... I wouldnt worry too much about it Jonny. I only had a skype interview yesterday as I am based in London. I was left for a good three weeks before they contacted me about the second round. The interview by skype was grand. There were three in total including my officer. The only thing is that I did mentioned UAE as my first option. They did grill me to see if I would be fine on another location so I am under the impression UAE is out @ this stage. They said every school is identical inside no matter the location. I have still to send examples of my work as I have applied to teach art aswell so I wouldnt panic too much.
    ;)

    Hey,
The pay is around 1500 euro a month (in UAE). Return flights are covered, so is accommodation and nearly all your bills. If you finish after the first year you will leave with June, July and Augusts salary and 3 weeks extra pay so altogether around 5000 euro, as well as what you have saved during the year. If you stay two years there is another bonus (in UAE anyway).
That said I know some people here that are flat broke!!! The lifestyle out here is very good, out all the time, holidays etc, it all adds up. You will be able to save but you have to keep that in mind when you're here and try not spend it all (which is easily done). Some people say you can't save at all out here but that's not true, I know some people have saved a few grand already.
As regards coming out here on your own as a female I wouldn't worry at all. Most of my school came on their own. It has its downsides, but all in all I think its worth it!
    Hope this helps.

    Hi guys,

I registered with Sabis Careers and got sent an application to fill and I sent it back and receipt was acknowledged. I'm wondering what happens from here? Is a phone interview next or if I'm not a successful candidate I hear back nothing? On the Sabis Careers website the status for one of the jobs I applied for is "in progress" does this mean anything?

    Thank you!
