Kicked out at 18?

I was kicked out at 19 because my dad's wife and I don't get on and she decided she wanted me out of the house. My dad has two young kids with her and she basically bitched and bitched until she got her way. Horrible position for my dad to be in but that's the way things worked out.

The rest of the family (aunts/uncles/cousins/etc.) weren't too happy upon hearing about the situation so after a couple of weeks of staying with my mate and then my GF at the time, my aunt took me in. I was lucky I had a part-time job, but the pay was below minimum wage and I was in college so I paid what I could towards rent/bills. I didn't talk to my dad for a few months after as I was just really pissed about the whole situation. I eventually had to drop out of college because I wasn't making ends meet.

For the year leading up to me being kicked out, my dads wife refused to get any food for me when she went shopping so I was used to feeding myself, but the more money you make, the more you spend. Even though I was working a few more hours I had to spend pretty much all of it just for the bare essentials.

Anyways, what's done is done. It wasn't a good six months but it could have been worse. I'm now living in a house with a friend of mine, back in college and my dad helps me out with the rent.

The parents the OP is talking about sound horrible though. More or less kicking him out on his 18th birthday because they say so without giving any reason whatsoever? Who the fuck knows an 18 year old that is truly mature, responsible and capable of living completely independently without any help from anyone, parents or social welfare alike? Could easily lead to homelessness, drug/alcohol addiction, depression among other things. On the other hand, it's probably for the best that he gets away from those sorry excuses for parents.
