Just discovered cabbage for android in the market, great app. I didn't realise we were getting it so soon. Fair play to the developer - I know he's on here occasionally.

BTW its an app that let's you use your free network texts on your phone; desktop etc...

    top marks for that app...

To pick up the contact photo it looks for a contact with the matching number and looks for a photo associated with it. Cabbage doesn't have access to the phone's own number so it uses the number of whatever account you have selected. The contact photo API is a bit temperamental tbh, it doesn't always seem to match properly. I think it has something to do with the multiple data sources, the same issue that has the same contact appearing multiple times for Captain Morgan.

As for the notification sound, I just picked a random sound off the internet. you can change it to whatever you want by pressing menu->settings->Notification sound

    1. Yes, I see. I had the number stored against my name in Contacts as 087-xxxxxxxx where as when signing in to Cabbage and Vodafone, I need to remove the dash. I presume it is the same for all contact pictures.
And yes, it did pick up my contact picture in the default SMS app.

    2. I know you can change it. That was the point. It is a very unfriendly screen to change it. You seem to have to browse through some form of directory structure to find a sound.

I wish you could use it though for replying to messages from the inbox, I had another app that did that but it kept not working so I uninstalled it.

The new pro version of this app does that

Oh, cool. Might get that so. Haven't bought any apps, this might be my first.

Android does some odd things with dashes in contacts. I'm looking into a way now of matching contacts regardless of dashes.

About changing the sound, the directory structure is your phone's directory structure, I'm not really sure how I'd make it more user friendly. What would you suggest?

    Great :)

Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, you want to be able to receive messages into the app and reply without having to open your default messaging application. Is that right?

is there any apps that can somehow fwd texts from a sim to another one..

    impossible it seems.

ie: texting on andoid phone from 08x cabbage number but actually on a entirely different number, can you get replies fwd to that one?

I'm not sure what you mean. I'll explain Cabbage's forwarding feature and tell me if that's what you mean:

You put the sim card for a number (say 0871111111) in an android phone and install cabbage. Then you can enable Cabbage's forwarding feature so that a web text account (say for number 0862222222) is used to forward messages to another number (say 0853333333)

So you can take messages that are sent to one number and forward them to another but the sim card for the first number has to be in a phone with Cabbage installed and it must be turned on

Is that what you mean or do you want to be able to forward messages sent to a number without having to have the sim card in a phone?

I have a temporary workaround for this problem. The adding of the spaces and dot is handled on the server side so I've put up another script that doesn't do it and you just have to point the app at that one instead.

Press menu->settings->Server side script URL and change it from http://cabbagetexter.com/send.php to http://cabbagetexter.com/sendthree.php (just press the back button after changing the URL) and your messages should then end with "- sent using webtext.three.ie". Let me know how you get on with it
That worked perfectly. For that, I just bought Ultimate.

    hmmm!

ok, let me explain I got two phones, a N82 I no longer use with a 086 number (which I still get texts from) and which is set up on cabbage on my android./

my new phone is a galaxy s with a totally different number in the uk.

I can send texts from my android but the people getting messages text back the 'other' number (N82) which I dont use. (I mean carry around with me).

so, my question was could I get these texts forwarded to my android...?

The only thing preventing you forwarding the texts is the fact that the phone that has your 086 sim card is an N82 and not an Android phone. Cabbage could forward those texts but it's an Android app so obviously it wouldn't work in the N82. If you managed to get your hands on a cheap android phone and put your 086 sim card into that instead you'd be able to do it. There's one on adverts.ie now for €55 http://www.adverts.ie/mobile-phones/vf-845/547663

    A euro well spent :)

Out of interest - when Tesco Mobile finally do webtexts, do you think it'll be updated to include that?

I see. I guess you use the same method to pick up the name of people from whom messages are received? For example, I receive a message from 0871234567, but in my contacts that person is 087-1234567, it doesn't pick up their name when displaying the conversation in Cabbage.

What I also notice is that in the above scenario, I had actually sent a message by selecting that person from my contacts and they replied. But it still does not pick up their name in the conversation list.

I was thinking the screen displayed could be the same screen shown in the standard Messages application when you select Settings -> Notifications -> check Received notification -> select Notification sound.

    Looks something like this:

Before sending the app removes dashes from numbers so that makes sense. I'm looking into a way to handle the way that different android phones seem to put dashes at random intervals in phone numbers

    Looks something like this:

Cabbage provides one sample sound as a notification tone and if you want to change it you can put any sound file you want onto the phone and point it at that instead using the directory browser provided. Your phone's manufacturer got people to produce loads of different high quality sounds for use with their phones but tbh I don't have the expertise to produce my own or the copyright rights to take someone else's and distribute them with my app. If you want to change the tone you can put an MP3 of anything you want onto the phone and use that

It's really annoying and confusing though having a converstion with a number and not a name. Surely it would be easy to cross check the number in the address book since it can do that when sending anyway?

Thanks for the answers. I understand now. It really is an excellent application.

It's supposed to show the name. Are your numbers stored with dashes in them like 3rdDegree's?

And is it just in the conversation thread that it doesn't show the name or the inbox too?

Edit: if you send someone a message from the compose screen by selecting their name from the dropdown does their name show up in the inbox until you get another message from them?

I was away so could only set up cabbage ultimate now that I am home and have my webtext login code.

Cabbage ultimate isn't working for me. It won't sent texts (get aan error saying "Error - null:+35387*******" and it shows only a yellow screen if I go into a thread in the inbox. Tried it with an 086 number without the prefix and still got the same.

Have gone back to the Beta you sent out (1.3?) that had the inbox feature. It works perfectly on my device.

One other person reported this problem but he said the problem went away when he restarted his phone. Have you tried that?

Nope. Still yellow screen and null number errors

From your phone's home screen can you press menu-settings-applications-manage applications-cabbage ultimate and press clear data and see if it makes any difference.

Did you use the export feature from cabbage lite btw?

and what phone and android version do you have?

Clear data worked. It's fine now.

    Ya, I used export feature.

    Samsung Galaxy Ace on 2.2.1

The other guy who had the problem used it too, I think there's a problem with it. Tell me, did you use the export before creating any accounts in Ultimate?

It probably does have something to do with connecting through the mifi device. there are some reliability problems using the program on Vodafone due to something on their network. As Captain Morgan will tell you m.boards.ie doesn't work properly on vodafone either.

Have you tried the app without sending requests through the mifi device and if so what happened?

Hi Sam, the app works fine on 3G and on other wifi networks. It would appear to be something to do with voda. Pity because it's the only network I have access to in the UK.

No, set up an account in Ultimate first. Then the notice about exporting from cabbage lite caught my eye (doesn't show up until after you create an account) and I went back into Lite and exported data.

Hmmm, if you'd said you hadn't created an account it would have been more conclusive to say this but I still think the problem is down to no default account being selected. I just tried it myself there, I cleared data from ultimate, exported from lite and I was able to reproduce the problem. Then I went into accounts and pressed the one that had been added to set it as the default and it worked fine from then on

I'm going to fix the export but in the meantime I think you'll be fine doing another export as long as you have an account selected as the default before you do it

Could you give it a shot and let me know if it works this time? You can always clear data again if it doesn't. Thanks

I'd like you to try something please. Go to send a message to yourself but instead of pressing send press more-schedule. Schedule the message for a few minutes in the future and press send request. If it works, do it a few times and see if it works every time

What I'm trying to see is if the problem is to do with how long the request takes. The schedule message request is very similar to the send message one but it just puts an entry in a database rather than logging into the network website and sending a message so it's much faster
