I would somewhat agree with flangemeistro about Muireann. Obviously it's early days yet, they're still finding a rhythm and all that, but at the moment it's very awkward at times and when the four of them are there together it feels a bit cluttered. This might be fixed when they get more accustomed to working with each other.

Muireann can come out with some cracking one liners when she gets the opportunity. Hopefully she will have more input, as was said above, its early days, but she does bring some balance to the show. Easy to listen to voice.
Ray is great but he needs to calm down a wee bit and not turn into a shouty, only loisten to me, jockey..

Ok listened again this morning but not as long as yesterday , just under an hour and if you were to take away all the Times Muireann said ya and ok then the only other two words i heard her say were Scotland and Edinburgh.
Kind of ironic really as she wouldn't last long on ah ya ok.

JP calling out the Free Money Minute contestant was hilarious this morning. If you didn't hear it it went something along the lines of: the guy only getting a handful of questions right, if even that many. Towards the end the lads were GIVING him the answers, literally telling him what the answer was and he still wasn't getting it. Then JP says, bad luck, the questions didn't suit you today... because you're absolutely STUPID!! :pac::pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

Haha yeah it was brilliant from JP. Also, the interview on Monday with the speed friending guy...the lads really did not really hide their annoyance with the guy who really seemed like he didn't want to be doing the interview at all. On Muireann, I think she has added to the show...I like her on the podcast only bits and its still very early days and she is still feeling out her way in the show but she is a good addition. In saying that though, I do quite miss Adelle!

The most sombre show I've ever heard from ray and the lads which is obvious giving what happened yesterday.

Listening to the ray foley podcast for yesterday and at the podcast only bit they were talking about Johnny Lyons. And Ray goes that man has a job for life.

Baring in mind it was recorded, edited and released before news broke about Johnny, still unreal to hear considering what happened and they rarely mention him any other day.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,692 ✭✭✭flangemeistro

Lads I'm sorry now but if this show is supposed to be a tribute show to Johnny Lyons then for someone like me who has never heard of the Johnny Lyons or heard anything about the man then they really aren't portraying him too well.

Like I'm all for celebrating someone's life as opposed to mourning them but from the small bits I've picked up this morning about him, im guessing he was single, he was in his 40's and all I've taken from their stories is that he was fond of going out socialising A LOT!

Now as i said i don't pick up that he was married or had kids so they probably think oh we're not hurting anyone here with these stories we're portraying Johnny as a carefree partying legend, but obviously the late Johnny has parents and probably siblings so i doubt they want the nation knowing that their 40 year old son/brother who was found dead alone in his house was a party animal, it's basically putting unnecessary images and thoughts into peoples heads.

They also might aswel just carry on with their normal show and just pay tribute to Johnny on the news segments because going from one drinking story to avicii to another night out story to Kygo really isn't a respectful and dignified tribute to the man.

I've mentioned already that i didn't know Johnny but i hope he rests in peace.

^He was a close colleague who had worked with both of them for years on both 98 and Today FM. They wanted to pay tribute to the man.

They are talking about the good times they had with him, which, yes, includes the odd night out (which no one can prove or deny had anything to do with his tragic death). They decided to dedicate the show to him and play music they new he would like. I don't know about you but if I were presenting that show I wouldn't feel right faffing through "Eh Yeah Ok" or making fart jokes with kids.

Also it's possible that the guys just weren't up to the show. Remember they are mourning too.

Thats who Johnny Lyons was, if you didnt know the man or never listened to him then you wouldnt know this....its how he lived, he didnt do anything bad, he lived it up and had the craic and thats how the lads felt they best remembered him, in my opinion its better than how RTE did with gerry ryan....paint him as some sort of librarian when we all knew what he was really up to.....

RIP Johnny Lyons. I was deeply saddened to hear last night. Could tell Ray and JP were genuinely sad this morning, and poor Deeno almost breaking down a few times reading the news. Can't believe we'll never hear "I'm Johnny Lyons" again.

On a side note, and maybe not appropriate given the circumstances, but the music used on the show was fantastic. Pity there isn't a bit more leeway given to the lads to play more than just the same playlist. Hearing the same songs at the same times most days gets repetitive. The likes of Oasis, AC/DC, snow patrol etc this morning was excellent on the walk to work...obviously I know it was in tribute to Johnny and don't mean to belittle the situation in any way.

^Not inappropriate to say it at all. The whole time I was listening to the show, and to Dara Quilty later, I kept thinking "That man had brilliant taste in music".

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,440 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

God yeah yesterday's show was a hard listen. Poor deeno nearly breaking down the first two times she did the news. It was almost as if it hit her by actually reading out the words. And muireann is a very upbeat person and love her "hello" during the links sounded sad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,757 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

It was definitely a tough show. But in a bittersweet way these tragedies always seem to bring out a really nice quality to the show. It was just 3 friends sitting around reminiscing about their friend.

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

Really enjoyed Thursday's show this week, they got to waffle a little bit more which I enjoyed. And the reminiscing about their charity singles was brilliant...Ray's version of Six with The Dublin Gospel Choir was brilliant! Also, I noticed they are using the old Today FM beds more often when chatting which I like cause the slow jazzy bed they use sometimes I cannot stand!

Not particarly Foley related but since we all think the music can be very repetitive on 98, here's a chance to have your say!

Anyone know off hand what their figures on The Blast were? Or the lunchtime show for that matter... Them mentioning it today has perked my interest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

Lunchtimes was up around the 130,000 mark before they left if I remember correctly.

Sadly Ray won't be able to go back to lifting Chris Moyles' jokes seeing as they'll be on air at the same time in a few weeks.

As both a Chris Moyles Show and Blast obsessive in the mid noughties, let's just say I noticed that there was quite a bit of "borrowing" going on :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

Just read Moyles interview in The Sun tomorrow and he mentioned that radio is too "safe" today in the UK...and it is the same here...that is the perfect word I would use to describe the show on 98FM at the moment...safe.

I'm so sick of that 'Reset your Preset' feature!! How long more is it going to last?? It really sounds pre-recorded and so fake.

And even yesterday, there was some fella on talking about pet names for other halves, and at the perfect moment when he was describing a pet-name not suitable for broadcasting, the word was bleeped out. Why are they pre-recording so much of the show??

Because it's easier to pre-record an interview after the show at a time that probably suits the guest better than early in the morning and edit it to sound good.

Prerecording the Reset Your Preset thing is a no-brainer really, They don't want to play out the 15 people they stopped who weren't listening to the station. :P

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

Reset Your Preset has only been around a couple of weeks and to be honest, its about a minute and a half of the show so doesn't bother me too much...I don't know if all are prerecorded though because there tends to be quite a bit of a gap when they find someone etc. so surely if it was pre-recorded they would edit it out?

The caller yesterday talking about nicknames, that was live I'm pretty sure...they might have had it on delay but in fairness he gave them a warning like 3 times before he said it that it wasn't suitable for radio so its not that hard to bleep out.

Lads are off next week anyways but glad that it seems like we wont be having a return to the daily kids bit which I think they were sick of...so the Kid or Classic bit they did yesterday was maybe their way of showing the bosses that people don't want it anyway.

Not impressed with the lack of podcast only bits lately...seems that they have cut it to doing one a week and even then its only 10-15 minutes long...when they initially started back doing them with Adelle most were 40 mins to an hour.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 876 ✭✭✭Euphoria Intensifies

Tbh I'd rather they did a podcast-only bit once a week on a regular basis instead of doing it 3/4 times a week for a few weeks and then nothing for months, like how it has been.

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

No podcast only bit again this week which sucks, really makes me miss that brief period of regularity we had with the NTN Podcasts.

On another note really enjoyed the start of the show today and the piss taking over One Republic being playlisted and their impression of Adelle was gas...at 10am every morning asking "Was that it? What was that? Are yiser saving your best ideas till 2016 or something?" Saying what we all think sometimes. :-)

Interesting idea they have with putting on show table quizzes around Dublin every now and then...something for listeners to have the craic and gives the lads a night out on Thursdays so a fun hungover Friday show to follow after those nights I bet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭IUA14

I'm guessing the podcast-only bits are done with for now, 3 weeks and none, which is a shame as they had been enjoyable. Once Adelle disappeared they got shorter and more infrequent, she seemed to enjoy them so I'd say she was pushing them to do it.

I miss the podcasts only bits, Ray would go off on some rants on them, they were great craic.

Well then, that's either a last hurrah event or confirmation that they've got a new contract (3 years expires around then I believe). :P

Hoping the bigger venue means I can grab a couple of tickets. Excited to see what they do with it this year after last years success, and always enjoy the lads outside broadcasts!

Definitely wont be any form of a last hurrah, said before I can't see them leaving 98FM anytime soon, seem to be central to what they are trying to do with the station. Was it ever confirmed they had an initial 3 year deal?
