After Castlewhite, the footpath in front of the construction site, towards the WGB is really slippery.Walk onto the road if you don't want to fall.Seen a few people fall there and nearly went myself on it before I got onto the road.

This morning was a complete joke. I almost completely floored myself numerous times. It's not as bad now as all the snow has turned into slush and have a guess what'll happen to that slush once the temperature drops below zero tonight. It'll be even worse in the morning.

Luckily it seems it won't freeze tonight! So things might be OK,The SU are looking for people to clear up snow around campus which is a good thing to do,But it should really be down to the idiots who thought it was safe to open college today..

Considering heading back up to Cork, as most of the snow has thawed out down here at home. Whats it like up there?? Would I be a crazy person to head up? Is the number 8 running? and hows Western Rd for walking in?

UCC and the surrounding area is a complete ****ing joke today, I, like many others, took serious risks to get in here, only to find cancelled lectures and so on. The important lecture which was my reasoning for coming in was cancelled; I was informed by a text from the lecturer at 1pm, just as I approached UCC from Western Road.

I've slipped, ****ed up my ankle, and have no way of getting home. Wonderful. I guess the best I can do is lock myself into the library and get a few essays done, and hope that things have thawed a bit by nighttime.

I had lectures at 10 and 11 but didn't bother going in for them; I don't even know if they went ahead or not. I only came into college to use the internet and really wish I hadn't. Not looking forward to walking home.

Have a lecture at 9 tomorrow but there's no way I'm getting up for it if the place is anything like today. I reckon if it hadn't been for the November floods, the management probably would have closed down the college.

According to a lecturer from the Geography department who I was talking to earlier, there is something coming up from Portugal, which could well result in floods over the next few days. You could'nt write some of this stuff, there's no relief whatsoever for Ireland at the moment! :)

Just got an essay printed out, I've a lecture at 5 which apparently is going ahead, it'll be interesting to see if there's many in it. Then I'm coming back in to finish my 3,000 German-Irish relations essay, of which I already have 1,500 done. If I finish that then I'll count my day as a success.

    Says on met.ie :
Cold tonight with frost and some icy patches. The patchy sleet and snow over Ulster dying out later also.
Very windy later tonight and tomorrow, with heavy rain pushing up from the southwest during the day, preceded by sleet and snow for a time.
Some flooding likely, from heavy rain and snow melt, with Munster and parts of Leinster most at risk.

Well they didn't do as good a job as they did with the floods, but I guess there's only so much they can do really. Short of controlling the weather or magically manufacturing grit, what else could they have done?
More clarification as to whether lectures were going ahead or not would have been nice, but I guess that's up to the individual departments and lecturers moreso than the SU.

I think i'm most annoyed at the request they posted around 2 this afternoon...
CollegeRoad.ie Anyone free for an hour to help clear the campus of ice/snow? Can you email me at ian@uccsu.ie if you can help please! :)2 hours ago · Comment · Like

If they were actually somewhat organised and gave a toss they would have organised that first thing this morning and not after lunch time. I was the Boole at 10 this morning and it was lethal from the student's centre right down to the entrance to the Boole Basement.

    Got this email today:

UCC will operate as normal tomorrow, Tuesday, January 12th 2010.

    Regards,
    Office of Buildings & Estates

Crap. I came down today but around my area it's very slippy. Terrified of falling tbh. Don't think I'll bother with lectures for a couple of days.

Why should the blame fall on them? Were they the people who decided UCC was safe to open?Did they release a statement saying that the campus was gritted, and therefore safe?

    No!

UCC Released an update Sunday night saying:
UCC would like to advise staff and students that the University campus has been gritted and made safe. Accordingly, University business will be conducted as normal on Monday January 11th.

If I read that I'd assume the place was gritted and that the people who chose to open the College decided it needed doing,As it turns out It hasn't been gritted and therefore why should the blame fall on the SU?

The SU didn't once say they'd grit the paths. I thought it was crazy that Ian would even try to get students to help make the place safe when the blame should be pointed towards UCC and not the SU.

The SU should have the interest of their students firmy at heart. Its clear that it wasn't in anyones interest for students to be in UCC today. If yesterday afternoon the SU had advised all students not to come into the college today the place would have had to close. I know that kind of political pressure can be nasty, but it would have been justified in my opinion.

@TW Byron: Are you the lad that was called an "ass"? :o

The stretch from WGB to Gaol Cross was well slippy this evening, with the bit where the Western Star was being unmanageable. You basically had to go on the road.
The stretch from the main gates to the Kino was bad as well. I saw one girl take a fall just opposite the Erinville.

That said - people weren't being overly clever. walking while texting, walking on the slippy parts instead of walking where it's clear and everyone else is walking, insisting on walking 3 or 4 abreast ...

No that wasn't me. It's kind of funny though reading everyone's reaction to it though!

I can't believe what I read here sometimes.

In fairness, people are in charge of themselves and if they felt they were putting themselves in danger they shouldn't have left their houses. I had 2 essays to hand up today as well as a meeting with my mentor, when I saw the state of the roads I decided it was safer for me not to go out.

Got a text from my friend at 11.30am to say she'd dislocated her shoulder after slipping on campus. I feel bad obviously but what was she doing there in the first place? Or anyone for that matter? None of my lecturers attended work today.

I get that people had to hand stuff up, be in lectures, get stuff done etc but we're all adults here who should be able to make decisions about our welfare ourselves.

I'm sorry and all for actually caring about my college degree  If theres lecture on people are going to try and get into them.

@TW Byron: I thought some of the responses were a bit OTT. Mark seemed to be picking a fight for the sake of it.

That's all well and good, but I think the point most people were making was that the university weren't taking our welfare on board. It's fine to say we're all adults and make our own decisions about our welfare, but many people couldn't afford to take the day off, losing attendance, missing important notes etc.. Not to mention all the people that had exams this morning. The university made no allowances for that.

I accept that but we're not children. We are well within our capabilities to make decisions in times like this. I would be floored if lecturers would not have made allowances for the day that it was. None of my lecturers showed up for work, most of my friends experienced the same.

And those in charge off UCC are also adults who should have the common sense to realize the dangers of opening a college with un-gritted footpaths and roads in and around the college. Inevitably people are going to come in as some lecturers are not so accommodating and people did have exams which didn't know if they could make up for.

Bad call from UCC in my opinion.

I had 4 lectures today (I only went to 1). Every single one of those 4 lecturers showed up. The fact is is that the decision was not fully ours to make. I value my education and will make attempts to get in to Uni even if it is slightly dangerous.
