Hopefully they'll make allowances for students who are snowed in. I have a German presentation on Monday and the way things are going I don't know if I'll be able to get back to Cork. :(

they should do. attendance has been crap all week anyway, so I imagine they're expecting people not to turn up/hand stuff in.

I hope so too, I've missed the whole of last week due to the weather and it looks like this week is going to be no different. I think there should be some email sent out to everyone telling lecturers etc. to give consideration to those who are in a bad position because of the weather.

Keep an eye on the student email Id say. Ucc wont be quite so eager as Batt to close the college. If they do, there will definitly be an email from either the SU or the president, if not both.

If they run out of salt and grit then surely they'll have to close, lest they risk claims by people with broken legs. As a health and safety issue it's likely that they could close.

Fingers crossed they don't though, I need every second of college time at the moment.

I hope they do close, the thought of having to take a journey that normally takes me four and a half hours on a good day down to Cork in this weather is terrifying me. Lecturers whom I have emailed too don't seem to be given much consideration to the weather conditions. I'd happily make up for any time I miss, I think it is unfair to students who have to travel distance to make it to college by continuing to have the college open and fully functioning :(

i've been cc'd on an email from the SU asking the registrar if UCC will be open for business as normal on Monday, will let you know the response.

I'm having the same problem,I usually get the bus via Kilarney in Kerry and if there's snow the roads around there will be hit bad.

The journey that takes me 3 hours normally on a Friday took me four and a half and the roads were OK then

UCD is closed until Tuesday it seems. You gotta love the Dubs. The slightest bit of hardship and the whole place shuts down.

    ???

I'm guessing they would actually save quite a lot of money if UCC is closed down.

not really, they'll likely have to pay their staff, even if the staff are told not to come in.

I'd say 4 days of very low power and heating usage would cover that though

My journey back to Cork is looking bad,Been snowing for three hours here!

I think lectures should definately be cancelled this week, or at least extra detailed notes put up on Blackboard for people who cant get to college. The majority of students are going to be snowed in seen as most of the counties surrounding Cork are badly effected by the weather, and Cork city itself is dangerously icy and may worsen. imho it seems that the colleges are only reluctant to close because they dont want to have to make up the time some other week or be under pressure to squeeze everythin in before the end of term! Maybe thats a bit harsh?? It just doesnt make sense to me why they'd put on lectures when they know the majority of students wont be able to attend due to reasons outside their control! Its not really fair when there wont be any other opportunity to catch up!

I want to go to college. I don't want to lose summer holidays the same way I lost Christmas holidays.

You didnt lose christmas holidays, you lost the study/review week.

I think it should close, road condidtions are hazardous, to say the least, and there is a good chance that a lot of people will get snowed in. Plus I dont want to hand in my essays monday and wednesday! :o

I emailed the S.U. so we'll see if they reply. Tbh, if it keeps snowing the way it is there is no way that college could operate as normal. It's been snowing since around 11 and it has only gotten heavier.

Also I don't want to hand up my Psychology essay on Wednesday. :D

I'm not able to get to Cork tomorrow anyway..Been snowing since 11,the grit on the road has done nothing,And buses seem to be cancelled from my local stop..

Now it is. The problems won't arise until tonight when the temperature drops. That added to the snowfall will lead to a slippery situation. Har har!

So has anyone heard anything yet from official sources?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 614 ✭✭✭blankblank

If they are planning on shutting the college they are being very slow about announcing the whole thing, I mean people who do have to traval might start attempting to get moving and try and make buses/drive down.

Ive to go to work at six till midnight, hope the roads will be okay on the way home.:(:(

    SU :

Despite the campus looking absolutely beautiful we know many of you don't want to chance getting in here tomorrow. We're waiting on an update from Senior Management and should have it shortly... in the mean time - get out and build a snowman :)

Would you ever add them on facebook, lads ?! They are very good altogether !;)

    From the SU:

'OK FOLKS - official word from UCC is that it will be OPEN AS NORMAL tomorrow. Anyone who cannot make it to college tomorrow are asked to get in touch with their department first thing in the morning. I'd like to stress that we are only passing on this message and any complaints should be forwarded to vpstudentexperience@ucc.ie'

What a complete joke. The SU did all the could like, the college authorities really couldn't give a flying fucc about the students

All the SU did is ask if the college was closing. I'm all for an SU that communicates well, but we need leaders, not just parrots. They should have been making the case to close the college and they should call on students that don't have exams or assignments to hand in tomorrow to boycott college for Monday at least.
