Look up Copyright and Parody. RTE could claim with a very straight face that their efforts are purely Parody. No court would believe that these shows are anything other than a clever exercise in cynical black humour, on the state of British TV.

    Nate

LOL. Funny. Except that should read 'no more than a clumsy half-assed exercise in cheaply copied attempt at humour, ultimately reflecting the state of Irish TV

This is more like a media project in college that has got onto the national airwaves.

    Perfect description

But why does this show fail?

It has Barry Murphy, one of Irelands most cutting edge comedians and the man behind Apre Match, The End, and Soupy Norman, and Mario Rossenstock, probably Ireland's best mimic.. I honestly think there is a fair amount of apathy from the two mentioned above, as well as a trying-too-hard Kevin Myers, and the guests so far haven't been up to standard. It could and should have been decent, but it simply wasn't.

It's all very fine saying RTE cannot make funny, and it's typical of Irish TV, but there's something more here. Good comedians, a good (if poorly exectuted and done before) idea and yet they still can't make it happen.

I'm at a loss here folks.

I have no grudges against RTE, and I believe most of their programing to be of a high standard, but there is a major achilies heel when it comes to comedy, which just isn't right, considering the amount of comedians this county produces..

Instead of berating them, let's come up with a suggestion

*other than the hardy bucks boys coming on and pimping their idea..

I thought it was an improvement on last weeks episode ,some funny moments.
Its certainly an improvement on the garbage that is The Panel.

Awful, just awful, cringe after cringe after cringe..

Cant see this lasting a full series once the novelty wears off

Barry Murphy's still the funniest on the show even in his limited role as host

The show just doesn't know what to do with itself. Badly directed, thrown together and hope for the best... Audience are annoying too laughing at the slightest thing.. No effort RTE, must try harder.

I was in the audience for it this week and watched it last night to see the difference. There were jokes there that were 'boosted' let's say afterwards. During the warm up comedian they get several different levels of laughs recorded and use them if necessary when a joke dies completely.

Although having said that, the banter between rounds and during stops in the recording can be good craic and it does win you over so you're more inclined to laugh at the jokes when you're there I think.

There were also funnier rounds which they didn't use - opting instead for the extremely unfunny 'true or false story' round - which I was quite surprised at.

Overall it was pretty weak though and the best laughs on the night were for ****-ups and things that were never going to make it into the show.

It's a complete disaster. It just is'nt funny. The set, sound and canned laughter just make it look more shoddy than it already is. Murphy is absolutely useless as host. He can barely read the massive cards in front of him and his quips are lame and dull. He is like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Myers has his head stuck so far up his arse I cannot understand him. He is taking all too seriously. Rosenstock is trying to be the Paul Merton character but fails miserably. They still have time to save face and just cancel it now.

It's a live studio audience, not canned laughter.

While I wouldn't agree that it's an absolute disaster it is very weak and could do with improved writing and production. The camera work is pretty shoddy.

The rounds that they use don't lead to good opportunities for sarcasm and humour like the ones in HIGNFY do. The Headlines and True or False rounds are especially dull and don't play to rosenstock or myers strengths (whatever strengths myers has that is)

Jeff - that is really interesting. Can you explain "boosted"? Did they record the laughter earlier and play it back during the programme? Who was the comedian on earlier?

The strange thing is that, apart from Myers, these guys are genuinely funny. improvised banter alone, should produce a few very good laughs.

But the way you describe it, they seem to edit out the funny bits and cut in some laugher they canned earlier? Weird.

Hvae to say this show is really growing on me. The pre show written jokes are very very good. Barry Murphy and Mario are particularly strong. Nearly all of the stuff is written before the show, but if that is what it takes to be funny, then let them at it. Barry Murphy's jokes at the start are usually the strongest bit.

felt sorry for yer man with the lisp tonight. Hard enough to be funny when you dont have the delivery skills of a comedian, without them not being able to understand you as well.

Oh God this show is brutal, pathetic. from the stupid fake laugh(when there isnt anything funny said), to the showbox studio. its so not funny its annoying. barry murphy is a funny man but in this show hes in the wrong job. hes constantly looking at his cards man, looks terrible. and mario is better when hes on the radio, not funny on tv. his shirts are terrible aswell. bin this show rte.

There is something wrong with the show ok. They have people who are funny individually, who are not funny together.

I went to the recording of last week's show and it was much funnier in the lead in and the breaks.

Kevin Myers is not remotely funny or interesting. He should never have been chosen. He should have been dropped when they realised their mistake.

Ian Coppinger was funny last night. But he is an improv specialist. They should have improv guys on the show not rehearsed stand-up comic actors. Having said that, Barry and Mario are delivering their pre-written material brutally.

And what was the story of the guy from the Daily Mail(?). I would have expected him to come up with some good headlines, but I don't think he came up with even one.

The good news? There are only two more programmes in the series.

    Brendan

Brutal! If anything it is getting worse. Murphy's jokes at the start of the show were lame. His delivery is horrendous. Myers just is'nt funny.Fact! Mario is not funny and laughing at his own jokes. The set is horrible. The laughter from the audience sounds fake. And why are they all reading from cards. The jokes are written out beforehand and they are still lame and badly delivered. Please bin this tripe!

His obsession with Churchill and the First World War is quite bizarre.

Was actually quite funny tonight, just watching Derek Davis rip into Myers.

Yeh, cuddly old Derek can be fairly caustic when he wants. There's no-one like a Northern conservative to puncture the pomposity of a bumptious Englishman

Overall the show was good fun tonight, ok.

    Pity about the set, tho'

    Fireball & Delaad!

What show were ye watching? A basis prerequisite for a show like this is that it should be a bit funny. The jokes are lame and badly delivered. It's rubbish, and should be binned immediately.

See there are a few funny things about the show, and one or two funny rounds, but its the awful dire rounds that melt it. When Barry Murphy writes his material, its quite funny. And last night, Derek Davis getting at Myers was funny.

In saying that, last night was probably the only show in the current run that has made me laugh. Next week seems to be the last show if my Sky Planner is right, so thank god. Maybe RTE will learn that to have a satirical funny panel show, you need people capable of being satirical AND funny.
