I couldn't believe that scene, it was like something out of a school play (only the acting was alot worse). It really is god awful, give me 'upwardly mobile' any day ahead of this crap. The theme tune is ok though.

Yeah that scene was truly awful. I mean they wrote in a character with pointy ears so that they could go through the same old Star Trek jokes. And wrote in a character called "diamond", so that he could crack all the "jokes" about his name. They were trying for the Father Ted episode where Father Damo (diamond) tries to lead Dougal (Val) astray, but it didnt work.

am i alone in thinking that this show could have been improved "slightly" if O'Hanlon and Roe reversed roles. I get the impression O'Hanlon lazily picked the Falvey role for himself and fell back on Dougal-isms to get by. May have been more interesting to cast Roe as Falvey...

Interesting. The reason why you might say that is bec. Roe is clearly the stronger presence. i'd have to say, OHanlon as a scheming shyster would have done him and everone else a favour. It's not that he's a one trick pony - i think - it's that he has been typecast - which means he has no backbone.
What was the idea behind the scene where Val's daughter walked off after seeing Owen Roe cleaning Ardal's coat.

Were they trying to suggest they were gay or something? If so it failed badly. Childish writing. I'd rather watch a repeat of Killinaskully.

I think it was to illustrate the 'father /son' (really mother /son') relationship between the two, how dependent val is on roe. It's actually (although badly directed) one of the few 'sophisticated' 'ideas' of this show, justifying/ explaining Val's role of follower. but the biggest prob is that
    THIS SHOW IS ****E!!!

Yeah it is very weakly highlighted in the series what the relationship between them is.

This show stinks more than the air pollution of the second episode. Maybe it was supposed to be a metaphor for the writing!

This is so uninspired its actually kinda depressing.

After 2 eps it seems it will take a miraculous improvement in quality for this muck to get a second series.

    RIP Val Falvey TD

Knowing RTÉ it may already have been picked up for a new season.

At a time when the country is on its knees thanks to corrupt and dim politicians ,,,,,RTE decides to bring out a comedy based around a corrupt and dim politician. It's enough to make you want to hurl the TV through the living room window.

It's bizarre really, it would be so easy to write an Irish "The New Statesman", and instead we get a bad Killinaskully.

Good point. Ardal seems unable to do anything other than Dougal. The fundamental problem is the script is just not funny and overall production is poor. The dog chase from episode one was just awful. The sound of a skidmark and then a shot of Ardal O'Hanlon standing stationary in front of a lorry which we are expected to believe has just skidded to a halt within an inch of him. Roe is a good actor and should have walked away from this.

Tonight's episode seems to be switched with Little Bit Showband.

    Now on at 8.30.

Was there a good Killinaskully??? Us Irish cannot do sitcoms.

The Brits get Malcom Tucker and we get this, beyond words.

It's a really poor show in fairness. A brittle apologetically written ode to brass necked gobsheens.

There is one positive aspect. A young/new writer may have thought Killnaskully was an anomaly, at least now they know for sure and won't waste their time with RTE

They gave away series one of killinaskully with the Daily Mail yesterday.
No additional sarcastic joke required on that one i think.

It's being bopped around the schedule - its back to 7.30 next week.

Not a good sign for a new show.

I did laugh at the 'Zulu massacre' analogy in tonight's show, but it was more the delivery than the material, Owen Roe is quite decent at times, and deserves better than this underdeveloped hodge-podge of ideas.

Some of the performances in the show veer so much into parody that it makes Killinaskully look like Cranford: The 'mad fella' with the greyhounds; the wife and children; and a particularly sad turn (from what looked very much like Phelim Drew) as the chief whip who's stage directions obviously just read "Peter Capaldi type menace with Dublin accent" (didnt work, btw).

There was so much potential for a show to highlight & satire the political scene in Ireland, but instead we've been given jokes about falling off bikes and nagging wives. Pity.

That isn't at all positive. 1. Where do they turn and 2. If they do go to the US and UK they are up against a huge amount of competition.

RTÉ should be able to get some new writers up and running. And then if they want to head east or west they should.

In relation to killinaskully, It is just an Irish version of The Last of the Summer Wine, at least it didn't last 30 years.

    I didn't Val see tonight.

In my view, a miss and a big one. I have watched just a few minutes of how ever many shows are gone so far and dont find it one bit funny.

    Em, haven't you heard of passive/aggresive/contained anger/sarcasm...?

Of course it's not positive, but it is what it is. Isn't time to accept RTE's inability in this area and be done with it. I certainly wouldn't trust them with a script - or the ability to commission effectively.

Val Falvey was very funny last night. So far I found it very good (and realistic) satire. I think it is the funniest thing on RTE in ages. Credit where it is due!

    Finding it's feet?
    Fawlty towers had 12 episodes.
Did Father Ted have to find its feet?

I watched the pilot and thought it wasn't great. Earlier today I went to the RTE Player and started watching the second episode. I stopped it after 4 mins or so. Just found it to be so badly laid out and very poor. I just don't like it at all. Sorry.

I thought the English Class and the Roaring Twenties were as bad as RTE comedy could go, then Val Falvey comes along. Between this and Wide Open Spaces, Arthur Matthews has really shat all over his previous comedy credentials. And why does RTE and the Filmboard continue to give money to Grand Pictures when they consistantly produce this kind of crap?

Well far as i know Grand made Fergus's Wedding, Paths to Freedom (and prob spin the bottle) Whatever one might think of those, they are far superior to Val Falvey.
I understand the desire for a prog to 'find its feet' but i really think the writing and especially the direction in this is prog to be unsalvagable
