What does Latency 242ms and Jitter 15ms mean when reading a speed test result?

Latency refers to a measure of time delay. 242ms is way too high which is not good for VoIP or gaming.

You should have below 100ms really (unless your on satillite).

    Thanks.

Currently, not into gaming and don't use VoIP. I did the test via a tablet. There are other wireless appliances hanging off the WiFi, would that matter.

I'm on a very long line, 1.6mB max speed. I'm about 1km from fibre cab, should the latency improve when connected for vDSL.

In my opinion speedtest.net is not more reliable.
Try do speedtest on speedtest.magnet.ie or speedtest.digiweb.ie (if will ask for account number type dw123456.

I gave them a try seeing as I've never used them but for me they seem pretty close to speedtest.net

They are very good noise readings, attenuation is brilliant, are you living next door to the exhchange? The down noise margin is abit low and might equate to not being able to get more that 19mb on speedtests.

Couple of houses away from it, so basically next door to it

Click "share this result" after taking the test and copy & paste the url provided. That provided the main results like the images above.

If you did it from a wifi device, it will be greater than done through ethernet.

If you switch to FTTC then the latency you receive will be less alright as the wire from the exchange to the cabinet will not be copper but fibre. If you're 1km from the exchange the latency won't be as good as being right beside it obviously, so it may be high depending on how crappy the line is.

FYI - Checked my UPC connection in Ratoath, Co. Meath yesterday and it's been upgraded from 25MB to 30MB, getting ~31000kbps download speed ;)

NOTE: This is with the Cisco 3925, SPI off and anonymous requests allowed through a Zyxel AP for the wireless only. Here's results from my server now:

I'm sure you can upgrade to 50 for free. A friend of a friend rang up UPC customer care to find out why they weren't upgraded and they did it there and then. :s

It's €55 I think - would need to check exactly because there was a €45 option I was considering. That price includes unlimited downloads and reasonable fixed-line minutes.

Its a fair speed, depends where you're located and how high the contention is.
It wouldn't be amazing for online gaming as pings lower than 70 are best for gaming. Lower pings are better.

    Nice speeds there ^^

Really hoping UPC will increase their upload speed as the VDSL providers are faster than them...
