    An Atari 5200!
You just toddle along here and drop a bomb like that!
    In awesome big pictures!
Who do you think you are Alphaeagle? Pyongyang?

Not as fancy as an Atari 5200, (!) but just picked up a couple more complete boxed Neo Geo pocket games.

    Metal Slug 2nd Mission.
    Puzzle Bobble Pocket.

I think the NGP madness may have to stop for a while!

Hey, where did you get the spare play button for your speccy? Mine is missing a play button too but I swapped it around for the REC button instead. So now REC is PLAY.. but would love to get a real play button back :)

Sorry. I found the button rolling around lose inside the +2. I then swapped over the pause button with the play button. I then glued the broken buttons togeather and hey presto it works..... Sorry I can't be of more help.

Both fine games, and two of only three in my underloved NGP collection :(

2nd Mission is a vast, vast improvement over 1st in terms of variety.

I really cannot wait to play 2nd mission. Abosolutely love the first. It's amazing how they managed to get the feel of such a system/power hungry arcade game onto a little handheld like that.

I've 6 more NGP games coming and other than Magical Drop which some unscrupulous scoundrel bought and Densha de Go 2 which I missed out on getting yesterday because my laptop was too slow to power on I think I'll be happy with all my NGP games.

I'm oddly addicted to this series. I have no idea what to do, it's super boring but oddly epic. Needs the whole lot localising and dumped in a bullet train presentation box.

Awesome little package arrived today from .jp! I received a book and a game but also the seller threw in little surprises including two obscure flavour Japanese KitKat's and a handful of flyers for video game themed club nights. Very cool!

    I received:

    1. Shooting Gameside Volume 1 [Brand New, BM-OCD] (to match my Volume 2) and Crimzon Clover [PC, NTSC-J, BNIB, SG-OCD]

    KQjUH.jpg

The VAT-OCD goodies got held up, being delivered tomorrow apparently so MVS goodies and assorted packed in stuff will have to wait until then err... then.

BTW, Lovely Atari, I'm getting ever more tempted! Atari SHMUP recommendations anyone?

Defender II is pretty awesome and it's incredible that they fit it onto the 2600, but they did!
    Worth finding tbh

Solaris is a bloody great game, countless hours spent in my youth trawling through it's universe. Another marvel of what could be achieved on the 2600.

Ok, well here's a few bits I've gotten in the last few weeks.

    IMG_20110915_105708.jpg

    IMG_20110915_105724.jpg

Two copies of Combat, signed by Joe Decuir. While he was only one of three programmers to work on Combat, it was him who created the game and concept.
Genuinely nice guy, was great to talk to and answered any questions I had for him. I didn't realise how important he was to the 2600's beginnings when I first started talking with him until I finished reading Racing the Beam. But he was very humble and was constantly giving praise to other Programmers.

    Next up:

    IMG_20110915_105814.jpg

    IMG_20110915_105824.jpg

    Adventure, signed by Warren Robinett!!
Another nice guy to talk to, mailed me a nice piece on Adventure too.

And last for the time being ;):

    IMG_20110915_105910.jpg

    IMG_20110915_105858.jpg

    IMG_20110915_105845.jpg

Klax and Motorodeo, signed by Steve DeFrisco!
Again, a pleasure to talk with. Was very flattered that I was looking to get them signed. And when I sent these few carts to him, I didn't have a box for Motorodeo. So he sent on to me himself!

Well that's part one, part two to come soon....:pac:

At first I thought you got them signed at a gaming convention.

So you contacted the guys and they agreed to letting you send them off to have them signed? That's pretty amazing. :)

    That's seriously awesome. Good work!

Time to find Cave staff addresses. :D

Yea a bit uber-stalkerish, but I figured I'd nothing to lose mailing these guys. Some haven't replied, some were downright rude, and some were so sound and obliging. I still have a few to arrive, and a few Programmers to stalk contact.

One that got away that I wish I got, was Howard Scott Warshaw. He replied to all my mails, but wouldn't agree to me sending off my Yars' Revenge cart. He has promised to sign it if he ever comes to Ireland for a holiday, in return for a pint of Guinness! He also signed off all his mails 'Yars Truly', nice touch. ;)

He was probably freaked out you'd send him an E.T cart :D

Lol, yea maybe so. I did tell him how much I enjoyed E.T. as a kid. I could finish that game in no time years ago, haven't really tried to sit down and play it in a long time.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,268 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Isn't he really proud of E.T. ? I mean it was an absolute piece of **** but he got a full working game out the door and included an easter egg of his initials in something crazy like 6 weeks when the norm was 6 months development for a game. There was an article in EGM years ago about how crap games get made and he said he was proud that he managed to get it completed.

Exactly. Have you read Racing the Beam yet? The pressure that some Programmers were put under is immense. There's one part in it about River Raid being programmed, and (can't remember her name) asks the other dudes in the room for a code for some sound effect like a klaxon, and one of the guys sits back in his chair and basically recites off the top of his head a code for a sound effect that would suit!
Like 2600 programming was just sheet music to him!

I've not read it but I really want to. **** it I'll order it from amazon next week :)

Not a goodie, but worth adding to a SHMUP collection I think. :)
