If you can manage it, and I know they often seem expensive for what they are, try aperture ("peep") sights. Much better than open sights for any kind of precision shooting.

I've tried that on a .22lr the other day. Good fun and really lets you know how good your shooting is. Coming from someone that has only used a scope for the last 6-7 years and hasn't shot open or peep sights since then. It is easy to see why more lads are getting into it.

Could be cheating a bit but was over in the midlands re-zeroing the rifle and done a card each at the 100, 200 and 300 yd targets. 100 yds was fine with half inch or less. 4 rounds one hole. 200 yds not too bad. Less than 1 inch. 300 yds wasn't great. 1"-1.25" then a flyer. 1.5" out from edge of group. My fault. Didn't watch wind.

Anyway haven't shot 300 in a while and forgot how small things look at 300 so imagine they will look a hell of alot smaller at 600. Still, looking forward to it even more. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!

Stick the word "rifle" in there instead of "any kind" and I'll agree with you ;)

Unnecessary. I was referring to absolute accuracy where precision of aiming is important. That excludes all shotgun and normal pistol shooting - by definition ;). For long-range pistol they'd still be more accurate - it's just that they're usually against the rules.

Fibble, if you can actually use peep sights (and ghost ring sights don't count) on a pistol when the peep sight is a few feet from your eyeball, then you've got remarkable eyesight.

I mean, why else would you see pistols with open sights, red-dot sights and telescopic sights but never with peep sights?

Fair point. I blame Sparks - he goaded me into going off topic.

For F-Class a good scope is essential, so forget about "peeps" for this weekend. I'm sure if anyone wants a go with them the T/R or ISSF folks would oblige separately.

    Range briefing at 10am.

All enquires to JP Craven on 086 823 26 41 or email at jpcraven@eircom.net

I went to the novice F-Class today, very enjoyable,
there was 9 of us there good variety of rifles, mostly .308 calibre,
only my second time on a range so still a bit unsure of the protocol, the lads there could'nt have been more helpful.
We zeroed the rifles on the 100 yd range then split up and half of us went into the butt's and half back to the 600 yd firing point. we learned how to mark the scores from the butts .
after that it was our turn to shoot.
after a safety brief and chat we got down to shooting, for me shooting a CZ550 in .308 My Coach Joe recommended to dial in 16" inches , we were fairly lucky with the wind it was mostly from behind and slightly from the left.
My first shot hit the target (to my amazement) Joe dialled it a bit more and i was getting mainly 5's and 4's , at this time i was getting some wind coaching from Tom , very informative,as the wind got stronger even though i was trying to compensate my shots were getting blown out to 2's and 1's and a few misses.
after that we went back to the 25m range and they measured our 600yd on a target and recorded it so that when we go back we can check our 600 yd setup on the way in.
got to watch some Pistol shooting too. bonus.
    overall a great day
    we will be back
    Thanks Guys

+1. What a great day. Thanks to all of the lads who gave up their day to give us a taste of F-Class shooting. Today was my first time to shoot at targets which were 600yds away. Its a serious buzz hitting v-bulls at that distance. Roll on 1000yds:D

Top of the agenda, new scope mounts so as I don't have to rely on the mildots. oh and yeah, a rear shooting bag.

    Thanks again lads,

    Derek

Didn't get to shoot as i was enthralled at the pistol comp, but did get to go over a watch the lads shooting later. Some nice rifles and it seems Sako TRGs won out the day. Must have been 4 or 5 of them. Ye all seemed to be enjoying the shooting and there was some good shooters on the day. Well done all.
