Hi All, Amyone know where is or have an Opel Rekord / Vauxhall carlton 'laid to rust'? I am looking for parts to convert one to power steering...

I'd suggest you put up a 'wanted' post over on TotalOpel.com (Irish Opel site).

Thanks for reply, did that, you just never know where someone knows where there is on or spotted one in a yard / field etc driving by. A lorry driver told me where there was a car once at an old yard, I went to see it and got some parts too!! ( with owners permission), where it was it would be not as easy to see from the road in a car. You just never know.....

If originality is not a concern you could consider an electric PAS conversion

Yes thanks for the idea, I have that suggested alright, I would like originality, maybe would get over it, but I think electric steering would be a little beyond my capabilities and tools, the original parts are bolt on.

205r16 split rim. Verdestein Tyre on it, m&s thread. 6stud. I think the rim came off an old range rover.
I gave another rin off a corolla dx I think. Will have to double check. I can't upload pics from my phone. If I could someone here could verify.
    ?30 for the pair.

    Thank you very much!

It's stunning, took me 15 months to get it this way and now have to sell, unfortunately.

Hens Teeth! Try Africa. I have one, but it would need E 5,000 + spent on it to bring it up to your standard.

I had a contact to buy a 4 speed overdrive gearbox for my 72 scimitar SE5a but I lost the blokes number. From Monaghan I think, anyone else on here know who it might be or know of anyone with scimitar parts?

Out of curiosity, did that have the same engine/gearbox combination as the Granada and Capri of the time, or was it different?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭shagman

It has a ford essex 3L V6 same as the bigger capri/granada/transit. It has a ford box I'm not sure which box they used in the capri etc.

    Is that directed to me?

If it is, the car belongs to my parents and they live in the States. The come home once or twice a year and drive the car. It wouldn't be for sale only that they haven't been able to insure the car this time around. Otherwise it would be NCT'd, taxed, insured and back to being a reliable daily driver for when they're in the country. Without insurance we can't even bring it down to the NCT to get it tested - it's always passed in the past.

If your own insurance policy is "open driving " ( permits you go drive anything you don't own) you can dfive it to the NCT station yourself and have it tested.

Some insurance policies specify that the 'other car' must have it's own insurance in place. Always worth double-checking this before taking it out on the road.

I am nearly sure this is always the case - it always has been with any policy I've had anyway.

I'm nearly sure too. But other posters here have 'debated' this point with me before...stating that 'if the cert doesnt state that the other car must be insured then its ok to work away'.

I'd always advise people to err on the side of caution when it comes to insurance cover. No point in telling a judge 'I wasnt sure if I was covered'!

here you go - price is strong though at €12k, but "open to cash offers", located in Galway. NCT has been out since Nov '16, which is approximately the length of the time the current owner has it - if it's in that good condition, why not get it tested??

Yea, I saw that...tis beautiful, a little rich more right now though

The buke in the boot (?!) is by a guy in the UK who knows his 123s (w123world.com) - it's probably one of his jobs

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Can you get a "top condition" '123 coupe for less??

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 paulus137

    Maybe not here in Ireland...

A jaunt to the UK may yield something as good for less though, like this (apologies for the lack of a hyperlink, I'm not allowed post them as I'm a newbie) theonlywayisw123.wixsite.com/towiw123/copy-of-snu666x-1981-230e-saloon

Yea I saw that too, thanks

I'm a little freaked out by the idea of bidding without seeing it (I've never bought a car on Ebay...) so I'm keeping an eye on the 123 specialists and classifieds in the UK

There is a fella down in Clare - posts on here occasionally - big into the W123 and old Mercs in general. He sells a lot on Donedeal

    Edit;

This is him. He has this 280 for sale

I bought a 123ce off an old gent up in the lake district, off eBay. (11 years ago, now) Was a chance, sure, but it was a great buy. Genuine car and totally honest seller. He had lost his licence due to failing eyesight.

If that car has been prepared by Mark Cosovich, then it would be worth the €12k tag, his cars are as good as factory fresh, but you would want to verify that before parting with your hard earned.
It might be worth having a look at these two sites to give you a flavour -

Probably another seller who believes if it has classic tax it doesn't need an NCT, scary amount of them out there !

I now realise I missed a trick by not showing my signed copy of that book in the ad when I was selling my W123........
