I beat it before but had to use save state so I could learn the last boss. That thing is just so unfair. It takes half an hour to get to him each time and once you do you freak out and **** up because once you get to him no matter how many lives you have if you die once you are sent back 4 stages, which was a bug with the game the dickhead developers thought would be funny to leave in. It doesn't give you much chance to learn the first two phases of the boss which are insanely tough.

Also abused the infinite continues so trying to get through it now with as little continues as possible.

I think after watching AGDQ make these games look easy I got a little bit cocky!

Cidonalad is currently battling Ornstein and Smough and is hating every minute, particularly the big b@stards outside.
He has gone and, against my advice, sold bits and bobs he figured he didn't need, including magical weapons that it turns out he needs.
As a result, he has to go and grind some specific enemies in the hopes one drops the needed weapons, and then he has to grind to level those up.

That'll teach the little git to be better at games than his dad!

The weapons won't help. Only advice for those two is git gud and real dark souls starts here.

He is not a fan of git gud statements, oddly enough!
But he's enjoying the challenge regardless.
He's stomping around in Havel's armour set, which makes him resistant to damage to a certain extent, but an easy target to the fast moving pair.
I encouraged him to opt for something that renders his character less tank like but, once again, he has sold on everything else!
    Dipstick!!

Well tanking up and 'swing away', as your wan in Mel Gibson ****efest Signs said, works on the four kings but for Bigs and Smalls you want to be avoiding damage rather than taking it. You need to have a light enough armour set to roll like cheech and chong.

You need to be fast enough to separate them and get sneaky hits in.

I think I remember seeing Ballz covered in the magazines, but I can't remember much about it.

And I'm afraid to google image search for "ballz"...

I have passed on your advice and he plans to fight them in the lightest armour he still possesses.

I spent much of the Halloween weekend playing Chrono Trigger for the first time...

I'm still playing this. I got a Nintendo DS late last year so I restarted the game. I've completed Death Peak and I'm now going to do the side missions before the big finale.

I've really enjoyed the story so far. The music and the visuals create a great atmosphere which makes it hard to put down.

This is my first foray into this genre. This game was probably a good choice for this because there are no random encounters and no need for grinding. It never felt frustrating.

That said, I fought battles whenever I could for those precious experience points. I also repeated some areas with different teams so that they would learn different double and triple techniques. I also took the conveyor in genome dome a few times because that seems to be the reason for its existence.

I should have this finished over the next few weeks but I'll most likely play the New Game+ to see the different endings. Then again, I might instead go back to Ocarina of Time. My girlfriend is quite insistent that I do. I'm in Jabu Jabu at the moment and the jellyfish were píssing me off.

Japanese RPG Misconception 101: You need to grind to get anywhere.

The vast majority of modern JRPGs (FF4 onwards) don't require any grinding to get to the end. Just not running from any fights will get you through them.

Boomerang takes care of those jellyfish without any worries. Only pain is when you're lining up a shot and one gets you from a blind spot.

Finished Super Metroid last night, what a cracking "little" game. Oozes atmosphere, zero handholding, encourages exploration and backtracking in all the right ways. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore :)

Said like someone that's not played Breath of the Wild yet! :D

Super Metroid is one of the all time greats, exactly because of those reasons. It's always going to be a classic and be held in high regard because of that. Pity that didn't carry through into Fusion, but Zero Mission is similar, being based on the original Metroid.

Ha, indeed :) I've the special edition and the wii u version arriving tomorrow via Parcel Wizard, but in all likelihood won't be playing it until I get a Switch. Looking at perhaps later this year, more likely next year though :(

It was my first time playing a Metroid game, so have no idea what the series holds after it. I have to say, it's hard to envisage how the series could possibly translate into 3d, but the reputation of the Prime games speaks for itself!

I still prefer Super Metroid, but they do an astonishingly good job of translating the feel of the games into a 3D world, and an incredibly well polished 3D world at that.

I'd recommend playing the originals of Prime and Echos on the GameCube if you can, for the original experience, and the beautiful menu screens that they created for them, that are sadly missing from the Trilogy release on the Wii.

The Prime trilogy are amazing, though the first one is perfect, the second one tough and the third feels like a farewell tour, full of moments that you've seen before but enjoy regardless.

It gets even more amazing when you see how many ways you can sequence break that you never even noticed, most of which are developer intended. Despite all the recent metroidvania games released from indie devs lately none really emulate that speed run post game of super metroid.

There's a good reason it's always the AGDQ finale game.

My view has probably been tainted by Bean Uí Mhoustache's pokemoning. She spends a lot of time in battle but that's after completing the story part. I'm guessing most jrpgs are designed so that you'll have enough xp for each boss if you fight what comes your way.

I think random encounters would still be a deal-breaker for me, though, and they seem to be common enough in that era. If I try another one it'll probably be earthbound before I move on to Nintendo DS or GameCube 3d jrpgs.

So I've been told. It's infuriating without it though.

Played it at the end of the PS1's life when I got it very cheap. Really didn't like it. It gets boring fast and the enemy sprites are so ugly. The engine is more Wolfenstein than Quake as well.

Any opinions on the Steam port of Ikaruga? Just read some guy has 4000 hours (yes, 4000) logged in Ikargua and I'm guessing it's one of those "easy to pick-up, difficult to master" gigs. On a bit of a shmup kick (haven't really gotten into genre before aside from Xevious 3D/G+ on the PS) after picking Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo during the Humble frenzy. Dunno how it rates for shmup veterans, but I'm having a hell of a time with it. Got my eye on Crimzon Clover and Jamestown too.

"I'd never do such a thing" says I in confidence, as I recall the fact my laptop doesn't do discs.

Ikaruga is fantastic on Steam. However it's not really a pick up and play game, takes a while to get your head around the mechanics but it's not too steep of a learning curve. Mastering it is a whore. The first stage is grand, second stage is difficult but after some practice shouldn't be too much of a road block. Third stage is the big road block to get past before you get to stage 4 where it takes the absolute piss, it's mental. Then there's stage 5... which honestly isn't that bad, it's no stage 4!

I managed to beat the GC version many moons ago with 5 credits but then I didn't realise it was a stinking 50Hz port so was probably a bit easier.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,413 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Beat the arcade version of Contra. It's.... Not that great compared to the NES version. There's only 3 stages, 5 if you include the base sections. The aiming and shooting are quite awkward compared to the NES game but once you get used to them the game us way easier than the NES version.

Stick to the NES version basically. It controls much better and the horizontal screen orientation is a lot more suitable for this game. The NES version also greatly expands each stage making them longer, better designed and the bosses are also way better. Each area of the arcades stage 5 was split up and expanded as its own separate stage in the NES version.

    Speaking of Metroid
I finally completed metroid zero mission, love the remake and thought the end hour was well done and a nice surprise

Finally Completed Super Mario 3 on Classic Mini
Is it the norm to skip pipe world 7? It's a ****ing heartbreaker.
Used the whistle and skipped to world 8
Then abused the save state function until done :P
