*Techno/Trance/Insert genre* - Stuff i've been asked to make for someone who wants a set that's hard / dark... they've asked for more stuff to sound like UMEK - so should be weirder from this point in :)

I like this sort of melodic/breaks one of his - not sure about the other stuff of his though - UMEK

Feedback would be handy with youtube links to styles / techniques

    Here's the track anyway - should be a fun year! - http://soundcloud.com/wtfrofl/minimalfury

That sounds a bit too "clean" to my ears if you're going for a sound similar to Umek's. This track off his X EP is pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c99iO8xmwEw

Also I like the stuff he did as Zeta Reticula: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cs_XjeSM6A

Yeah, this track was written before the person wanted the Umek flavor added - but will sort of bend things around in the next tracks (so not ripping his style, just elements [filth being one of them :)])

    Cheers for the links!

Its good, fair play. I think the drums are a bit too weak though. The detuned synth is panned too far left and too bright I think, a touch of reverb might make it sit better as well. You should try high passing the reece and layering a sine wave underneath it. Will give it more oompf :)

thanks a million for the feedback. very much appreciated. just one question; what do ya mean by high passing the reece? i'm not really down with the jargon :o

A 'reece' is what people call that type of bass sound you have thats very fat. You should cut the very low frequencies using a highpass filter to make room for a sine wave instrument which will play the same notes (sub bass). Its just layer two basses together to make it sound bigger.

    Hi all,

So I remixed Cut Dick by Mr Oizo. I really liked the original but it goes a bit mental half way through with far out sax solos and gnarly key transposition so I chopped it up a bit and made it my own. I would be really interested to here other people's feedback pls!

Bear in mind I am not long at this and IT'S MY VERY FIRST REMIX so be gentle, PLEASE be gentle.

    It's on my myspace www.myspace.com/vforce

had a listen to them tunes. they're both deadly. really like isotope. love that echoey synth that you have coming in halfway through. nice trancey vibe to it

liked toltec as well although tbh i thought it did take a while to really get going but it's a good tune all the same. really liked the last few minutes when that appregiated synth comes in

Cheers Whiterob. I was pushing for some feedback on this thread as I don't have many other sources for getting it otherwise. I appreciate it.

aye, sure same as. Being honest, I don't really know what I'm at and none of my friends are too into this sort of stuff so it's good to get pointers and feedback. the tunes that i've heard from ya sound deadly, fair play to ya

theyre pretty good once you get used to the limitations. theyre more fun than serious though. you could definitely use 2 of them for a pretty comprehensive live show, but itd take a lot of practice and adjustment to their workflow

great scratchpads for ideas too. really very easy to throw ideas down

can you import your own sounds into them and then use it as a sequencer

Gobsmacked Records start 2010 in style with the "World Domination EP": the latest hard hitting release from the increasingly popular Irish Techno Label. Featuring the legend and “Big Boss of Techno” Robert Armani, Killaz Records owner and pioneer of his own bouncy bass heavy hard techno Torsten Kanzler, the Infamous Londoners the Space Djz plus the up and coming Irish Techno Talents Luke Creed and Karl Cullen. World Domination brings together the different Techno styles from around the World, the tough Chicago beats of Armani, Kanzler’s original bouncing hard techno style, the return to their roots of jackin' Techno from the Space Djz and perhaps a glimpse of a big future from Techno up and comers Luke Creed & Karl Cullen with the dark and funky World Domination as they look to carve their own names amongst Techno’s Big Hitters.

Your using reason yeah? You really got to learn the basics of mastering - keep at it though!

Aye, I'm using Reson alright. Where is the best place for me to learn more on mastering in Reason?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,313 ✭✭✭fabbydabby

Dunno about Reason but youtube is a great place for free tutorials on this sort of thing.

You might need to get a seasoned producer / engineer to show you how to place each element in the mix so everything has room to breathe and get the whole lot sounding sweeter.

You're on the right track though.

I was looking at mastering online last night and remastered '6 Shots to the Hed' and 'Japanese Moon'. I'm wondering if you kind people on this forum could listen to these tracks and tell me if I'm on the right track:

Also could you recommend any mastering software (preferably cheap or free!) that could help me out in this process?

Thanks in advance. Also if they are just sounding like poo let me know.

Hey, yeah an improvement alright, well done, but you gotta keep plugging away as it needs more improvement but your heading in the right direction. After that, you got another problem, anybody that has used/familiar with Reason could tell within seconds that is the daw you used to record these tracks, this is something you most definitely don't want to happen!!

Thanks for getting back to me empirix much appreciated. What would be the obvious pitfalls I shuld avoid to stop it sounding like it came from Reason. Sorry if its a stupid question - total noob here.
