    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rain may become heavy at times in Leinster, parts of the midlands and inland Connacht, before most of this rain pushes north into Ulster. An area of dying thunderstorms over the Irish Sea (which originated over Wales) could redevelop when the cells move over land in east Ulster before mid-day. About 10-20 mm of rain will continue to fall, but a gradual drying trend already beginning to assert itself in the southwest will slowly spread north, the rain should end around early afternoon in central counties (Dublin to Galway) but it is likely to rain most of the day further north (perhaps letting up around 3 p.m. for the Slane concert). With the drying trend will come some breaks in the cloud and isolated light showers but a stronger southwest to west wind at 30-50 km/hr. Highs about 17 or 18 C.

TONIGHT ... Mostly clear, lows 6-10 C although lower values may be reported in the usual inland valley locations.

SUNDAY ... Sunny with increasing cloud during the afternoon, light rain arriving in the southeast towards evening. Highs 17-20 C.

MONDAY ... A few early morning showers, mainly in Leinster, and later in east Ulster, but otherwise partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals by afternoon, highs about 22 C.

TUESDAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, isolated showers in north Connacht and west Ulster, highs 19 to 22 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Increasing cloud, light showers possible by evening in west, highs around 21 C, moderate southerly winds developing.

OUTLOOK ... Several more days of rather bland, pleasantly warm weather appear likely until the weekend of 3-4 June which may become more unsettled and a little cooler (18-19 C). The charts well into June appear fairly "average" in terms of both temperature and rainfall amounts, with spells of unsettled weather but a few dry days mixed in.

My local weather on Friday was sunny and very warm with highs near 25 C. We are expecting this to continue all weekend. After so many months of awful weather here, this last two weeks has been quite a treat. It will take a while for the ground to dry out and despite the warmth there is still a lot of snow above 1500 metres waiting to melt.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks, rain by late afternoon pushing into the southeast, highs 18-20 C.

TONIGHT ... Intervals of heavy rain moving north through Leinster and east Ulster where 15-30 mm could fall, only 5-15 mm further west with some places perhaps almost dry. Lows 10-13 C.

MONDAY ... Rain moving north from Leinster into east Ulster, gradual clearing will follow from the southwest, with afternoon sunny breaks. Highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY ... Some light rain may brush the northwest coast, otherwise a partly cloudy and generally dry day in other parts of Ireland with morning lows 8-11 C and afternoon highs 18-20 C. Winds picking up from the southwest to west at 40-60 km/hr by afternoon.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, highs near 21 C.

THURSDAY ... Early morning rain, then clearing, not quite as warm, highs near 19 C.

OUTLOOK ... Becoming somewhat more unsettled as June begins to unfold, although equal numbers of wet and dry days by the looks of the charts, and temperatures never too far from average (which is 18-21 C) with overnight lows generally staying close to 10 C.

My local weather on Saturday was scorching hot and bone dry with highs inland near 32 C, closer to 25 C in the city (where I wasn't) and relative humidity quite low. We are going to have to endure this for a few more days apparently.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with a few brighter intervals developing this afternoon, scattered light showers mainly confined to northern counties this morning (1-3 mm) and rather breezy (WSW 30-50 km/hr) although lighter winds by late afternoon and evening. Highs near 18 C.

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals developing, also patchy low cloud and mist, lows around 7 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, increasing cloud in western counties by late in the day, light winds becoming southerly 20-40 km/hr. Highs 19-21 C.

THURSDAY ... Occasional showers, only 1-3 mm expected, breezy with partly to mostly cloudy skies, highs near
    20 C.

FRIDAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, showers, highs near 18 C.

OUTLOOK ... Rather unsettled and breezy, with middle of next week looking very breezy and showery at times, temperatures perhaps falling back to slightly below normal values for a while, highs 15-18 C. This may improve gradually into mid-June, not expecting this scenario to prevail all summer.

My local weather on Monday was sunny and very warm, highs near 25 C, although with a stronger sea breeze developing and feeling much cooler this evening at about 15 C. Our hot, dry spell is coming to an end for a while now with more seasonable temperatures although still fairly decent for time of year (low 20s).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, with a gradual increase in cloud over western coastal counties by this evening, also some isolated showers possible in north central counties by afternoon, but a generally dry day elsewhere. Highs 19-21 C.

TONIGHT ... Increasing cloud, occasional showers developing in western half of the country, 2-5 mm possible. Lows 10-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Mostly cloudy, outbreaks of light rain, and some heavier showers in south central counties by afternoon, highs 17-19 C.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY will bring frequent afternoon and evening showers in a somewhat unstable southwesterly flow, with highs each day around 17 or 18 C, morning lows around 9 C.

OUTLOOK for NEXT WEEK ... Rather unsettled in a moist southwesterly flow, with the chance of an interval of stronger winds developing from a passing Atlantic low mid-week (timing and track details obviously rather tentative at this range). Highs next week will probably average about 16 or 17 C. A slow improving trend appears likely as we approach mid-June.

My local weather changed to overcast and cool with frequent light rain on Tuesday, and there were some embedded thunderstorms nearby. Highs reached 16 C. The warmer air remained in place over central and eastern B.C. and WA state during the day and highs there were 27-30 C.

    Sunday, 4 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... A few sunny intervals this morning in Leinster and east Munster, as showers already active in the west move slowly east to become more widespread and in some cases rather heavy with thunder possible. Rainfalls 5-15 mm. Highs of about 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT ... Rain will be heavier in west and later south to southeast counties as low pressure tracks either across or near the southern coastal counties (guidance is not unified on this yet). Either way, it should rain most of the night in the south with more of an intermittent showery light rain further north, so expect 10-15 mm south and 3-5 mm north. Lows 7-9 C.

MONDAY ... Rain will become more confined to the southeast during the morning, with a few scattered showery outbreaks further north, with the main feature becoming a cool west to northwest wind 40-70 km/hr holding temperatures down to 12-14 C in the north and northwest, 14-16 C south and east. A few more showers with occasional sunny breaks can be expected in the later daylight hours.

TUESDAY ... Continued rather windy and cool with occasional showers and some sunny breaks, winds westerly to northwesterly 40-70 km/hr. Lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Overcast, slightly warmer and humid with outbreaks of rain possibly becoming heavy at times (20 mm potential). Highs near 18 C.

OUTLOOK ... Variable cloud and unsettled Thursday and Friday, then quite breezy or even windy by Saturday with rain moving northeast, followed by partial clearing. Temperatures generally 15-18 C each day and nights rather mild at 10-12 C.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast in the morning, then partly to mostly sunny in the afternoon, with a high of 17 C.

    Monday, 5 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... As rain moves out of the southeast, a second disturbance will approach the southwest this morning and bring additional rain to parts of coastal Munster and south Leinster. Otherwise, some clearing will develop from Connacht and Ulster into parts of Munster and Leinster, but considerable cloud will redevelop with isolated showers. Winds will begin to increase after mid-day to reach 40-70 km/hr from the west to northwest this afternoon and evening and it will feel quite cool with highs only 12-15 C for most, 16 C in a few parts of the midlands.

TONIGHT ... Windy with a few passing showers or intervals of drizzle, lows 7-9 C.

TUESDAY ... Continued rather windy and cool with occasional showers and some sunny breaks, winds westerly to northwesterly 40-70 km/hr, highs near 15 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Becoming overcast, slightly warmer and humid with outbreaks of rain possibly becoming heavy at times (20 mm potential). Lows 6 to 9 C and highs near 18 C. Winds southwest 40-60 km/hr.

OUTLOOK ... Variable cloud and unsettled Thursday and Friday, then quite breezy or even windy by Saturday morning (S-SW 50-80 km/hr) with rain moving northeast, followed by partial clearing. Temperatures generally 15-18 C each day and nights rather mild at 10-12 C.

My local weather on Sunday was mostly sunny with weak showers producing mostly just some temporary dark skies but no rain; due to the sea breeze it was about 18 degrees locally and a little warmer further inland. We are expecting warmer temperatures for about three days as heat builds over the interior regions.

    Tuesday, 6 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Windy and cool with a mixture of sunny breaks and passing showers, some of which may become briefly heavy with thunder and hail by this afternoon. Winds west to northwest 40-70 km/hr, highs 12 to 16 C.

TONIGHT ... Clearing, very cool, lows 3-7 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Increasing cloud during the morning, followed by rain spreading rapidly northeast, a bit warmer and more humid with southwest winds 30-50 km/hr and highs 15-18 C.

THURSDAY ... A few additional showers or thunderstorms, but some clearing by afternoon, lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

FRIDAY ... A dry start to the day, but rain spreading in by afternoon, highs about 17 to 19 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Rather unsettled with occasional rain, and breezy, with southwest winds on Saturday, west to northwest on Sunday, temperatures near 20 C on Saturday and 16 C on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK is looking somewhat improved now, with longer dry spells and reasonably warm temperatures (18-21 C). The models want to return to unsettled weather after that but that projection comes with very low confidence, the improvement next week could easily lead to further improvement down the road, fingers crossed.

My local weather on Monday was sunny with a high near 21 C (warmer inland) and this is set to continue here until Wednesday before we get a few unsettled days.

    Wednesday, 7 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Some sunshine this morning in east and north, as cloud over south and west spread in around mid-day, followed by rain (10-20 mm likely) gradually spreading into Munster this morning and other regions mid-day to afternoon. Warmer and rather humid, highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Occasional showers, staying quite warm, lows 12-14 C.

THURSDAY ... Variable cloud, isolated showers and thunderstorms, warm and humid, highs 17-20 C.

FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, just a few isolated showers, lows 8-10 C and highs about 19 C.

SATURDAY ... Warm and humid, a few showers or thunderstorms possible, highs 18 to 22 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, not quite as warm, highs near 18 C.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, isolated showers, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY of next week are looking quite pleasant at this point with warm sunshine at times and highs 20-23 C.

The further outlook still looks rather unsettled but as I was saying yesterday, this outlook is not very reliable and the trend could improve or stay improved from what's already in the forecast next week. I do think the worst part of this spell will be done by the end of today, so hang in there.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with increasing high clouds and very warm, highs 22-25 C.

    Thursday, 8 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rain clearing east, partial clearing, but some further showers and thunderstorms will likely develop, and could become briefly heavy in west-central counties and midlands, quite warm and humid, with highs 18-21 C. Rather windy at times, south to southwest 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals developing, with the full moon visible at times, mild with lows 8-12 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals during the morning, then increasing cloud, just a few isolated showers, lows 8-10 C and highs about 19 C. Rain will arrive overnight and about 5-10 mm will fall but mostly during the overnight hours into Saturday morning with lows near 15 C.

SATURDAY ... Warm and humid, a few showers or thunderstorms possible, highs 18 to 22 C. Blustery southwest winds at times, 40-60 km/hr.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, not quite as warm, highs near 18 C.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, isolated showers, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY of next week are looking quite pleasant at this point with warm sunshine at times and highs 20-23 C. It could even get a bit warmer than that in the inland eastern counties but for now we won't speculate on how warm it could become, waiting to see if the charts on offer this morning are reinforced by later guidance.

My local weather saw an end to a pleasant warm spell with increasing cloud all afternoon, highs near 22 C, and the threat of rain in the air tonight, with highs expected to fall off to about 16 C by tomorrow.

(the exact time of the full moon for those interested will be 2:11 p.m. IST Friday the 9th of June)

    Friday, 9 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, with a few passing showers (only small amounts expected) in some north-central locations this morning. A more significant rain event will begin late this afternoon in west Munster with clouds increasing all afternoon in the west. Highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Intervals of rain may be briefly heavy around midnight to 0300h but most of this rain should begin to clear northeast by morning after 10-20 mm falls, lows 12-14 C.

SATURDAY ... Variable cloud with blustery south to southwest winds developing, about 50-80 km/hr in Connacht and west Ulster, 40-60 km/hr elsewhere. A few more passing showers and risk of an isolated thunderstorm by afternoon, as gusty winds begin to veer to southwest. Highs 18-21 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, showers and a few isolated thunderstorms, about 5-10 mm rain on average, with a slight clearing trend later afternoon, breezy with morning lows 10-12 C and afternoon highs 17-19 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals, highs 18-20 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY are looking a bit unsettled but with a mixture of cloud and sunshine, occasional showers both days, highs near 20 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY of next week may turn quite warm with highs 22-25 C.

My local weather on Thursday was wet until mid-afternoon, then just cloudy, with about 25 mm of rain and highs near 16 C.

    Saturday, 10 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Warm and humid with moderate south to southwest winds, 40-70 km/hr, rather cloudy but with some sunny breaks, and a chance of showers or isolated thunderstorms this afternoon (2-5 mm amounts in some places). Highs 18-21 C.

TONIGHT ... Variable cloud with some further showers, blustery southwest winds of 40 to 60 km/hr, lows 10-13 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, a few showers or intervals of rain developing, about 5-10 mm possible. Highs 15-18 C. Moderate southwest winds 40-70 km/hr.

MONDAY ... A few sunny intervals then some showers, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY ... Mostly cloudy with a few sunny breaks, patchy light rain or drizzle in onshore southwest winds, highs 18-20 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Showers, breezy, highs near 20 C.

THURSDAY ... Showers, breezy, highs near 18 C.

OUTLOOK ... The warmest weather now appears more likely to occur around Friday and next weekend (17th-18th) with highs 22-25 C in some parts of the southeast, generally 18-22 C further west and north and 15-18 C near south coast as the winds will be generally southerly. This spell could last a few more days although models so far want to terminate the spell after about three days, so we'll have to wait and see how that evolves.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy but mainly dry, with a few isolated and brief showers. Highs reached about 17 C. Inland, there have been heavy showers over some mountain ranges melting a lot of snow (the snow pack was considerably above normal last winter) and as a result, a major bridge washout has occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Revelstoke, B.C. -- the highway is likely to be closed for several days and it forces people to drive several hundreds of miles around to the south to complete this link -- those roads include some ferry crossings so there is basically gridlock between central B.C. and Alberta with the southern route now clogged with extra traffic.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with a few brief brighter intervals (mainly in central and eastern counties), patchy light rain or drizzle at times, more frequent this afternoon near Atlantic coasts. Highs 17 to 19 C. Winds southwest 30-50 km/hr. Some sea fog may drift inland in a few coastal areas northwest and south coasts.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy, mild, humid, patchy drizzle, lows 11-13 C.

TUESDAY ... Occasional light rain or drizzle mainly in Atlantic coastal counties, brief sunny breaks possible further east, rather warm and humid, highs 16 to 20 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy, a few showers. Winds briefly turning more westerly with a slight drop in both temperature and humidity levels, lows 8-11 C and highs 16 to 19 C.

FRIDAY will turn somewhat warmer again with a few sunny intervals in east and central counties, highs 18 to 22 C.

WEEKEND of 17th-18th now expected to become quite warm with some sunshine mainly away from fog-bound coasts, highs inland 21 to 25 C. This warm spell is showing signs of holding on for a day or two into the following week before a more unsettled period begins with near normal temperatures returning.

My local weather on Sunday was pleasant, a mixture of sun and cloud, and highs near 20 C. Heat wave conditions continue in eastern and central regions of North America with highs well into the 30s and some severe storms along a frontal boundary in the northern Great Lakes region.

    Tuesday, 13 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few afternoon brighter intervals, patchy light rain or drizzle mainly confined to coastal south and west and intermittent there, highs 18-20 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, mild. Lows 11-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, rather warm inland and cool near south coast in southerly onshore winds. Light rain will develop by afternoon and evening near Atlantic coasts as a weak cold front drifts inland. Highs 18-21 C except 15-17 C near some south and west facing coasts.

THURSDAY ... Breezy, somewhat cooler and less humid, passing showers in parts of the north, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY will turn somewhat warmer again. There is more problem from cloud than from any other source in getting temperatures above 20 C but some parts of the inland south could get some sunshine at times allowing highs into the low twenties. Coastal regions may be a few degrees cooler near 17 C with onshore sea breezes and low cloud. Nights will be quite mild at 13-15 C.

SUNDAY currently appears somewhat cooler as winds turn more westerly then northwesterly, although this may clear the air somewhat and the increased chance for sunshine between passing showers may keep highs in a roughly similar range of 16 to 19 C for most. Sea breezes will become more prevalent on west and northwest facing coasts.

MONDAY will continue partly cloudy with highs near 18 C.

There may be one more attempt to establish a warmer air mass mid-week with highs 18-22 C, before a more concentrated change to unsettled and relatively cool temperatures later next week and towards the end of June.

My local weather on Monday was mostly cloudy with highs near 18 C.

    Wednesday, 14 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, warm and humid, outbreaks of light rain will remain confined to northwest and parts of west Munster until afternoon and will then make a slow advance eastward, but amounts generally slight (2-5 mm). Highs 18-20 C.

TONIGHT ... Variable cloud, passing showers, becoming breezy from southwest, lows 10-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, passing showers mostly confined to northern counties, fresher but only slightly cooler for most, highs 14-17 C north, 17-20 C south.

FRIDAY ... Becoming warmer with a few sunny intervals, more persistent low cloud with some sea fog and drizzle near northwest coasts and outer south coast. Morning lows 11-14 C and highs 18-22 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will bring some warm, sunny intervals in many areas and highs could reach 21-25 C away from cooling sea breezes in south and west. Nights will be warm also with lows 12-15 C.

OUTLOOK is somewhat uncertain as to how long this warm spell may last, some indications would suggest that it may remain in place for much of next week with only slight cooling around Tuesday but no large changes, so perhaps highs closer to 20 C by mid-week. Sea breeze distribution will change as the wind field becomes more variable and then light east to southeast, making the west relatively warmer and the east a bit cooler than this coming weekend. There is some chance however that the warm spell will break down more substantially during next week, so we'll have to indicate an uncertain outlook on that. Eventually there are signs of some quite humid and unsettled weather with the possibility of locally heavy and possibly thundery rains but that would come about ten days to two weeks from now towards the last week of June.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with highs near 19 C. Hot weather continues over eastern and central North America. If you're wondering about the weather for the U.S. Open golf event, here's how that looks (the event is about 30 miles northwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin ... it does not look all that great, today's practice time may be washed away by heavy rain, Thursday and Friday will bring cloudy skies with some risk of thunderstorms both days, Saturday looks very unsettled with heavy storms possible, and Sunday somewhat better (Monday is of course in play either for a playoff or delayed play and it also looks unsettled). The recent heat will not return as it gets pushed south and east tomorrow, and temperatures will be around 20-23 C each day). Strong winds appear unlikely except during heavy storms and then play would be delayed anyway, so while play is ongoing conditions should be fairly benign and it's hard to see how the green conditions would get very fast given this amount of rainfall).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rather cloudy with passing showers this morning but with some sunny intervals across parts of the south, further showers and perhaps a brief thunderstorm for parts of the north, west and central counties mid-day but a clearing trend later afternoon, fresh southwest winds 40-60 km/hr and highs near 15 C north, 18 C south.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals with fog or low cloud near some west and south facing coasts, lows 8-12 C.

FRIDAY ... Hazy sunshine will be fairly widespread with some low cloud or mist drifting inland from Atlantic coasts and near outer south coast. Warm or very warm inland, highs 20-23 C. Near some coasts it will remain around 16 C but the east coast should have weak sea-breezes at most, expect around 21-22 C in Dublin.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will be sunny and warm in many places. Some south and west coasts will continue to have low cloud, fog and cooling sea breezes but for most of the country highs will reach 22 to 25 C. Sea breeze zones may be held down to 15 to 18 C. Nights will be warm with lows 11 to 14 C.

MONDAY will continue very warm but with more of an east to southeast wind (albeit rather light) the sea breeze cooling will be more noticeable on the east coast than during the weekend. Highs will continue to reach 22 to 25 C in many areas and this should now extend to the west coast. Highs 15 to 18 C in some coastal areas.

TUESDAY will see more cloud and a slight drop in temperatures with highs 18-21 C.

OUTLOOK currently calls for gradually cooler and more unsettled weather to develop later next week but details are very sketchy at this point and there is some chance of the warm spell holding on a bit longer too.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast and cool with sprinkles of light rain and highs only 13 to 15 C. For the U.S. Open Golf, the outlook remains rather unsettled today and Friday but mostly dry, some brief showers, variable cloud and highs near 23 C. Saturday has a greater risk of showers and thunderstorms especially later in the day, highs near 24 C. Sunday will see gradual clearing and now it looks rather breezy (west to northwest), highs near 21 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Low cloud and mist this morning will gradually yield to hazy sunshine in most places, although the cloud may be more persistent in some coastal areas especially south and northwest coasts. Warmer with highs reaching 22-24 C in some inland areas, 17 to 19 C coastal (about 21-22 C Dublin area).

TONIGHT ... Hazy, some fog developing near coasts, lows 12-15 C.

SATURDAY ... Hazy sunshine developing during the morning, becoming very warm. Highs 22-25 C inland, 18-21 C coastal with some fog or low cloud near outer headlands.

    SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, warm. Lows 12-14 C and highs 20-23 C.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, turning slightly cooler in most of the north and northwest with highs 16-19 C there, remaining rather warm east and south except in some coastal locations on east coast, as winds become more northeasterly, highs generally around 20 C or a bit higher inland. Slight risk of a local shower or thundershower in the inland south.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, warm. Highs around 20 C.

OUTLOOK ... Remaining quite warm for mid-June, and increasingly humid with a slowly increasing risk of showers and thunderstorms later in the week. Highs 21 to 24 C and possibly a bit higher in a few areas that get good amounts of sunshine (most likely to be inland west).

In general, winds will remain rather light during this warm spell and local sea breezes will tend to develop on all coasts after today, but they will be more successful in bringing cooler marine air inland where they are from the general direction of the overall wind field on each day.

Anyone travelling to southern England or France should note that highs there may be closer to 28 to 31 C at times during this coming warm spell.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast, chilly and wet with light rain most of the day, highs only about 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rather cloudy this morning with warm sunshine developing in most regions by mid-day, highs 22-26 C. Some coastal locations will have low cloud, mist and cooling sea breezes with highs 17-19 C.

    TONIGHT ... Hazy, warm. Lows 12-16 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals, very warm (except for local sea breeze cooling). Highs 22-26 C but 17-19 C near some coasts.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud with longer sunny intervals by afternoon, somewhat cooler in Ulster and north Connacht with highs 17-20 C, remaining quite warm elsewhere with highs 21-24 C, slight risk of showers in north central counties to midlands. The shift to light northeast breezes will make for more robust sea breezes in Leinster that may keep highs around 20 C on the east coast.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, warm, isolated showers or thundershowers (most likely inland south). Highs 19-23 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Warm and humid, heavy showers likely with some thundery showers by afternoon or evening. Highs 22-25 C.

OUTLOOK ... Although it will turn a little cooler and fresher by Thursday, some guidance suggests this change will be quite marginal and that temperatures could remain above 20 C once it clears up, with a more substantial shift to more seasonable temperatures near the weekend of 24th-25th or into the following week.

June is not often the warmest month of the year. I don't have long historical records at hand for Ireland but in the central England series, the last year when June was warmest month was 1970, and the frequency over 360 years of records is about 8%, including several cases when June tied with July or August. September was only the warmest month of the year once in that series, way back in 1890. It is more often July (55%) than August (37%) but their mean temperatures over that long interval of time are only 0.4 C deg different. June is normally about 2 deg cooler than July, so if this pattern continues July and possibly August would be a real scorcher.

My weather, on the other hand, was partly cloudy and pleasant but not overly warm at 17 C. Some dark clouds developed late afternoon but they failed to drop any rain.

U.S Open golf (in Wisconsin) may have some thunderstorm delays today, although not an all-day rain, and Sunday is expected to become sunny and rather breezy.

    Sunday, 18 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Some cloud this morning but widespread sunshine likely again during the mid-day and afternoon hours, very warm with highs 21-25 C. Somewhat cooler near the northwest coast partly due to more persistent cloud but also cooling sea breezes, highs 18-21 C there.

TONIGHT ... Hazy with some fog and low cloud developing, lows near 13 C.

Lows 8-12 C and highs 19-23 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Warm and humid, showers likely with some thundery showers by afternoon or evening. Lows 10-14 C and highs 22-25 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, warm. Highs near 23 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The very warm spell will gradually fade out and will be replaced by cloudier weather with occasional rain returning to the mix. The transition may take several days, so expect temperatures to drop rather gradually over the weekend of 24th-25th with highs by the following week generally 18-21 C.

My local weather on Saturday was mostly cloudy but dry with highs near 19 C.

    Monday, 19 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rather cloudy in north Connacht and most of Ulster, highs 17-20 C. Some sunny intervals will develop further south, with winds turning light north to northeast. As a result, east coast locations may have more noticeable sea breeze cooling today, but it will remain warm elsewhere in the midlands, south and east with highs 21-23 C. Isolated showers could develop near the frontal boundary around Longford, Cavan and Monaghan.

    TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, lows 8-12 C.

TUESDAY ... Hazy sunshine, cloud further north should break to sunny intervals and it will either stay warm, or turn warm depending on Monday's trends, with highs reaching about 24 or 25 C inland. Sea breezes on most coasts due to a generally light wind gradient.

WEDNESDAY ... After a rather warm night with lows only 11 to 15 C, daytime showers and thunderstorms developing, warm and humid, highs about 25 C except 16 to 19 C northwest coasts.

    THURSDAY ... Sunny intervals, warm, lows 10-13 C and highs 21-23 C.

FRIDAY ... Increasing cloud, risk of showers, highs near 20 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Unsettled with showers and thunderstorms at times, highs around 18 C.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast and sometimes foggy with persistent light rain or drizzle and rather chilly with highs only about 15 C.

    Tuesday, 20 June, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny and very warm in most regions again today, and the warmth will begin to push north by afternoon or evening to reach a few places that have not been included in previous days. Highs 22 to 26 C. Locally a few degrees cooler where east and later southeast breezes bring in a sea breeze.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers or thunderstorms possible, very warm with lows only falling to about 17 or 18 C in some places, 14 to 16 C more generally.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, very warm (hot might apply in Leinster) with highs making a run into the high 20s and possibly very close to 30 degrees in the east and southeast, some central counties also; highs 22 to 25 C in west and north. A few isolated showers or thunderstorms will probably develop along troughs and a cold front sweeping through from west to east during the late afternoon. (Highs in southern England could easily reach 34 C and in northern France about 36 C).

THURSDAY ... Sunny intervals, still quite warm although more seasonable with morning lows 12-16 C and afternoon highs 21-25 C. Some heavy showers may develop late in the day in north Connacht, west Ulster.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, passing showers, cooler and fresher with morning lows about 10 C and afternoon highs 17 to 20 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, highs near 19 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will see a return to unsettled and cooler weather similar to a week ago, with highs near 17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for unsettled and rather cool weather towards the end of the month and this may last into early July, but the current very warm spell may be a sign of longer warm spells to come, in the middle to end of July and parts of August.

My local weather on Monday was pleasant, despite a lot of mid-level cloud, the sun was casting weak shadows and it got rather warm, near 20 C. We are getting the outer edges of a heat wave to our south; highs reached 47 C in Arizona and over 40 in parts of California too.

UPDATE on Isolated Thunderstorm Risk (1800h to 0300h and a second round tomorrow afternoon)
    __________________________________

A few showers that may contain brief thunderstorms will approach west Munster this evening and track northeast through parts of east Munster, south/central Leinster, the midlands and south Connacht overnight. Chances appear to be about 30% for isolated thunderstorm activity, so only a few locations are likely to see any lightning, but it can't be ruled out.

There is probably a somewhat better chance for thunderstorms to develop during the day tomorrow, when a cold front pushes east across the country late afternoon and early evening. There will be about a 40-50 per cent chance of thunderstorms breaking out ahead of and during this frontal passage, but it will be warmer than today in Leinster as winds veer back to the southwest eliminating the sea breeze that has kept it relatively pleasant today (in eastern counties that is, as the west has warmed up considerably due to today's easterly flow coming across the land).

Further updates may appear for more specific thunderstorm information as things develop later. Watch for some development across west Munster into south Galway this evening, and later on tonight, moving through central to inland southeast counties, with the best chance of seeing any activity, but it may not be intense so perhaps a couple of flashes of lightning and some sporadic rain as this moves in.

The heat will diminish in stages Thursday to Saturday and a much cooler, fresher interval is still expected from Sunday to the following weekend.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Showers and brief thundershowers will continue to move east but amounts will probably be rather slight (2-5 mm), although a heavier shower could develop around Meath and north Dublin, then partial clearing will follow and it will remain very warm in the south and east with highs 25-28 C. In the west and north, a somewhat cooler air mass will move in around mid-day and highs will be held to about 22 C. By afternoon or early evening, another round of showers and thunderstorms is likely with a cold front, and winds could become rather gusty at times (southwest 50-70 km/hr).

TONIGHT ... Breezy, a few more showers then partial clearing and a little fresher with lows 10-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Sunny intervals, still quite warm but less humid, with a band of rain arriving in the west and north late in the day. This may begin to fragment to showers before reaching the east and south by evening. Highs 17-19 C north, and 20-25 C south.

FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, passing showers, breezy (westerly 40-60 km/hr). Morning lows about 8-11 C and afternoon highs cooler than Thursday at 17-20 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

SUNDAY ... Increasing cloud, showers possibly becoming rather heavy late in the day, cool with highs around 17 or 18 C.

MONDAY ... Heavy showers, highs near 16 C.

OUTLOOK ... Unsettled most of next week although less rain after mid-week in a showery and cool west to northwest flow, highs quite cool compared to this week, only 14 to 17 C.

My local weather on Tuesday started overcast and became sunny around lunch time with highs reaching 21 C. Record highs were set further south in normally hot regions that became dangerously hot on Tuesday (Phoenix 49 C, Needles CA reached 52 C).

The summer solstice has just occurred at 5:25 a.m. IST.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with brief showers possible this morning, less than 2 mm of rain likely, then gradual clearing with decent sunny intervals by afternoon, breezy and cooler, although still pleasantly warm with highs 19-23 C.

TONIGHT ... Rain by early evening in northwest will spread to some other parts of north-central then west-central to northeast counties overnight, 5-10 mm rain possible, and lows 11-13 C. Remaining partly cloudy and breezy further south with lows 12-14 C, then a few spotty showers by early morning.

FRIDAY ... Clouds breaking to partly cloudy skies with a few more passing showers, breezy (westerly 40-60 km/hr). Highs 17-21 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows near 8 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

SUNDAY ... Clear intervals early morning, lows 6-10 C, then sunny breaks during the morning with increasing cloud by afternoon, showers possibly becoming rather heavy late in the day, cool with highs around 17 to 19 C.

MONDAY ... Heavy showers with partial clearing by afternoon, lows 8 to 10 C and highs 15 to 18 C. About 10-15 mm of rain is expected.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY ... Breezy, rather cool with occasional showers, winds west to northwest 40-60 km/hr at times, highs each day about 15 to 17 C, overnight lows generally 7 to 10 C.

OUTLOOK at present calls for this cooler and unsettled pattern to remain in place for the first week of July, beyond that, would expect perhaps another warm spell at some point in mid-July.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny with a cool sea breeze and highs about 17 C. It remains brutally hot in the desert southwest region. Tropical Storm Cindy is slowly moving inland near Lake Charles in western Louisiana and heavy rainfalls are the main problem as winds will peak at about 40-50 mph. If you missed Bret, that was briefly active near Trinidad and north coast of Venezuela, and has since died out south of Aruba.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some light rain continuing to move gradually south towards Wexford, then continuing rather cloudy with a few more widely scattered light showers, brighter intervals developing mid-day with showers mainly over northwest coastal counties by afternoon. Rather blustery southwest to west winds 50-70 km/hr will ease this afternoon. Highs 16-19 C.

    TONIGHT ... A few clear intervals, lows 6-9 C.

SATURDAY ... Sunny intervals, isolated showers but many places likely to remain dry most of the day, moderate westerly winds 40-60 km/hr. Highs about 16 C north, 19 C south.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals to mid-day, then increasing cloud, periods of rain by evening. Lows 7-9 C and highs 17-20 C.

MONDAY ... Occasional showers, partial clearing by afternoon, highs 17-20 C.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud, showers, highs 16-18 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be breezy and cool with intervals of rain that may be rather heavy at times, in a northerly flow around low pressure near the Irish Sea. Highs only 14-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The pattern appears to remain cool and unsettled for a week or so after this forecast period and may not improve much until mid-July.

My local weather on Thursday was pleasant with sunshine and highs near 21 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, isolated showers or brief periods of drizzle, lows near 9 C.

SUNDAY ... A mixture of cloud and sunshine around late morning and early afternoon but increasing cloud in the west, followed by outbreaks of rain by evening, highs 17-19 C.

My local weather on Friday was sunny and warm with highs near 24 C. We are expecting hot weather this weekend, highs may reach 32 C.

(astronomy note -- new moon just happened at 03:32 IST).
