A lot of people I know can't go because they have no jobs and therefore no money but one of my friends mightn't be able to go if he does get a job, as he won't be able to take the time off work... :(

Anybody any tips for the weekend, e.g. Where is best to pitch me tent??..How much drink should I actually bring and if I do bring alot is it stupid to bring it in a suitcase with wheels:pac:!?...Also if I have a red ticket is that where you have to camp coz I thought I came across something there a little while ago that says you can still camp in the other field if ......thank you;)

Last year we bought feck all food (As we were poor, still are) just brought loads of stuff with us.
For the first night loads of my mates brought like, sausages and crap and disposable bbqs. They didn't die anyway.
Eh, I lived off tins of sweetcorn.
    Seriously, amazing.

Also, nuts and dried fruit (I'm mad, I am) and stuff were great.
Wouldn't recommend bringing fresh fruit at all, or anything perishable at all really...

I camped for 3 days last year (Doing the same this year) so we pitched our tents in like, a far-awayish field.
Was a fair walk, but there was still loads of craic and only half as many scumbags around, so none of our stuff got robbed at all.
Still have the tents actually, one of the girls brought them home!
Also, my friend brought padlocks (Look, we actually are really cool :P) which I thought was a good idea, we could lock our tents and stuff. Although they're flimsy as **** and a quick knife would have sorted the whole breaking in thing out... but yeah.
Leave nothing of value in them at all.

I wouldn't recommend pitching your tent in a really high traffic area near the entrance to the camps and stuff, where everyone has to pass by and all.
Like, I knew a few people in beside the Circus tent and stuff- everything had been robbed by Friday morning.
    And I mean, everything.
Like, I think even the tents themselves got robbed!
So yeah, same clothes for 4 days! Woooh!
And WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT CAMP NEAR THE TOILETS.
    Seriously.

I'd recommend one of those huuuuuuuge backpacks, or a trolley thingy that folds up! You may look a bit odd with a suitcase with wheels, plus it'll definitely get destroyed.
Bring plenty of drink, but please note a lot of it may get robbed.

I thought vodka was a good idea because like, it's compact.
Haven't been able to drink vodka since though AT ALL as it immediately now makes me sick!
Used to be my drink of preference...

And doesn't matter what colour your ticket is!
Half of us had blue last year, half of us had red.
    We all camped in red.
Nobody cares at all- it makes no difference.

Use a backpackers bag. They're big enough to fit everything you need (crate goes in your arms) and have comfy straps. They have wheels too, so when you're walking down that big path thing it can be helpful.

In terms of food; I always find myself not feeling hungry at all during oxegen and I know a lot of my friends do too.
Every night I usually just get a burger and chips but for breakfast etc you'd probably want something a little more healthy. Bring a bit of fruit for the first morning if you can. Packs of rashers, sausages and all that stuff and a disposable BBQ is great.

And on where to set up - I would recommend a little bit further away from the main area. Seriously, it's packed in the fields closer to the shops/arena.
Last year I camped just past the xbox live stage in the blue camp. It was a fair walk but there was no scum around and the only thing that got robbed from us was the flagpole with our Swedish flag on it.
(Our tent was huge though so it may have just intimidated people)

I would actually recommend not bringing a huge amount of drink with you because the trek from the entrance to the campsite is exhausting when you have everything else to carry, and a weekend's worth of cans/ bottles of drink will be quite heavy. There are free shuttle buses in to Naas going pretty much all day so you can hop on one of those and head to Tesco (with its MOUNTAINS of Tuborg and Dutch Gold:pac:) for cheap drink once you have everything else set up.

As for food, beware that three or four days of fried food and alcohol can cause ferocious heartburn. There are plenty of places to eat up there, but you will probably be dying for something that hasn't been fried and buried in salt after the first day or two.

And tins of sweetcorn sounds absolutely brilliant! I'm definitely going to do that this year, assuming my fecking ticket ever shows up.

Does anybody have any recommendations as to what type of clothes and shoes I should bring to Oxegen? ie Wellies or old runners?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

I'm going on an Oxegen shopping day next week, buying loads of thick socks, crappy tshirts and drink! I actually love the lidl brand vodka...

Does anybody know where to get a nice, reasonably priced rain poncho? I want a poncho rather than jacket, I hate rain jackets.

    Wellies, in my opinion.
But I'd also bring old runners with you! Wear the old runners going, bring the wellies with you.

WARNING: Welly burn HURTS sooooo much.
Bring special socks- Y'know like, those soccer/GAA big thick long socks?
I'm a girl- I bought loads of knee high stripy ones. Seriously though, from past experience as a culchie, OUCH.

As for clothes: I just brought dresses last year. Maybe not a great idea if you're a guy..
For any girls though, dresses, skirts and shorts with wellies was the best idea ever.

Bring a few hoodies, and a really light, thin raincoat. A few funky t-shirts.

You can get crappy ones for like, €2 in pound shops!
    Buy a few!

How many days are you going for? 3, 4?
How many cans does it take to get you drunk, like, I dunnooooo?

Say, 6 cans a day or something- if it's 3 days 20'll do you. 4 days, maybe bring more.

It'll probably all get robbed anyway before you get around to drinking it.

Aaaah just 2 weeks left now!:)

So, for all the noobs in the house, if you could give just one piece of advice for the weekend, what would it be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 167 ✭✭RexMundi

just wondering, it being my first time and all.

How strict are they on id going in? Would a photocopy passport do the trick?

Also is Punchestown a walkable distance from Sallins-Naas Train Station? My mates wanna take the train but they're not usually too well up on these kinda things.. and what kinda time do people usually start arriving on the Friday and finally, sorry for so many questions, should I be worried that I haven't received my ticket yet?

Thanks in advance for the help

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,686 ✭✭✭Kersmash

If you're bring a photocopy of your passport you'll need school/college ID too. But I've heard they aren't that strict on ID. They'll ask you if you look young like, but as long as you don't look 12 you're grand. I, however, wouldn't risk it.

Got an 8man tent today for 80 quid, not too shabby.
I plan on bringing 30ish cans of beer, will that be a pain to carry yeh?
Also what's the deal with Id's, will they not let you into the place is you are 17 and not accompanied by a 25 year old??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 668 ✭✭✭ch252

    nah you're grand afaik without somebody over 25 if you're over 17. It's when you're under 17 that there's a problem I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Water bottles full of vodka all the way! I love me some lukewarm vodka and flat coke

Bought wellies and hiking socks, cost me 6 quid in total! Brilliant!
(If anybody sees anybody with yellow wellies covered in rainbows, poorly hacked at to make them shorter then that's me :p)
I've also got Dry Shampoo, sunblock, antibac hand gel stuff and a little baby bottle of mouthwash.
I have a tent but no idea how to set it up... now just get some ponchos, toilet roll, drink and a bag and I think I'm good to go!

Myself and all of my friends were ID'd last year, even though most of them were about 20, and some of them looked a lot older.

Someone I know (She was only 16 I think) didn't have ID and wasn't let in for about 4 hours.

    Bring ID. Everyone.

Yeah just away from the main areas and toilets. Red isn't safer. It's just divided up.

I hope there are enough stewards, marcshalls and gardai to patrol the place.
Stewards should be professionally trained to deal with variety of situaitons likely to arise.
Gardai should be out and about visible and take no nonsense from pissed revellers pissing on other people's tents, trying to start trouble.
Any trouble should be cracked down immediately by the gardai, even if it means using their batons. Too many gougers have spoiled it before.
I appeal to all to monitor theirs and their friends' alcohol intake. Why do you need to get pissed to enjoy such a festival? Bit childish like. Drink is the ruination of this country. So please drink in moderation and treat people with the dignity and respect you would like them to treat you.

I don't know if I really want to drink... I was at AC/DC and it was fun not drinking at all. I prolly will, but it's so much cheaper not drinking! Curse the enjoyment and hyperactivity Jager brings me!

    +1

True, I'll be working there but the gardaí you see is probably only half of whats actually there, there will be loads of plain-clothes Gardaí there too I'm sure so just because you can't see 'em doesn't mean they're not there!
