Is that a grand Seiko? Cannot make it out?

Looks like one. A watch superior to the equivalent Rolex, for those who don't like to show off...

Grand Seiko is correct - as I said she doesn't take a very good wrist shot.

Its a quartz - SBGX063. High end seiko quartz 9F62 movement, plus/minus 10 seconds per year, needs servicing every 50 years (vacuum sealed). Also quite, quite beautiful.

I'm a bit of a Seiko fan. This is on my wrist today :

why do people always legitimize grand seiko by having a go at rolex?

It's not having a go at Rolex IMO, but I don't find it hard to believe that a lot of people buy a Rolex to show off rather than because of the watch itself. I bet they wouldn't buy it if it was the same watch but unbranded!

Anyway, love that shot on the SS strap Reloc8.

Maybe not Eoin, would people buy an unbranded grand seiko?

I'm not saying anything negative about them but this whole better than Rolex thing doesn't make any sense

Well I suppose it depends on the model. Rolex have generally great case design and quality but their internals can be variable, even decidedly low end. Good article on an Explorer here. I quote "As it stands, this caliber 3000 is the most crudely finished watch movement that I have ever personally examined; and I include in that observation, a number of movements in extremely inexpensive watches."

Their name is a lot of their appeal. And fair play too, they pretty much built the whole recognisable trademark thing in wristwatches and indeed were highly instrumental in building up the popularity of the wristwatch itself. They kinda remind me of Apple computers in some ways. Less innovative than they give themselves credit for but highly focused in applying innovations, keeping quality higher than many and building the brand name.

Me? Given the choice between an unbranded seiko and an unbranded rolex? Probably the Rollie TBH. I prefer the look of them(or certain models) as I find the Japanese aesthetic in wrist watch design not quite agreeing with me. Dunno why as I find the overall Japanese aesthetic in other things very agreeable. Ideal world? Rolex tool watch design with a Seiko in house movement.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I might be wrong, but I think most people who would see a grand seiko on someone's wrist would think it's worth a few hundred quid. So unbranded or not is irrelevant.

Maybe some of them are better than Rolex models, I don't know. I don't find it hard to believe.

But the point (that I thought was being made) is that they're a good choice for someone who wants an understated but top end watch, without the flashiness that goes with a Rolex.

I'm sure some of them are better depending on what criteria one wishes to apply :) I'm not disputing that point at all nor am I a Rolex fanboy.

The point I'm making is that people always seem to give greater kudos to grand seiko because they aren't a Rolex and that somehow makes the buyer more discerning.

People don't say the same of iwc or jaeger which are unrecognisable to the man on the street aswell as are panerai pretty much, generally if you want to impress most non wis wear a nice new tag , anyone into watches will know a gs.

Also they carry great kudos in Japan prolly more so than rolex.

Thing is I just wanted a high accuracy quartz dress watch and this was the best I could find for the money.

Edit : also wanted longevity as this is a watch to mark a special occasion and I figured Seiko were likely to still be around over the years for any servicing or repairs (although it should need battery changes only for 50 years).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭Bullseye1

Rolex are like Porche. I love alot of what Porche do even though they have hardly changed in 60 years, bit like Rolex. There are two or three Rolex models I'd love to own but their range is quite limited. They are also a safe investment when compared to IWC, Zenith and JLC even though I think they are superior watch makers.

I have to say I like their dress watch range. Very clean and classy. Look forward to some better pictures and of course a wrist shot :D

Said I'd post this with the titanium bracelet as seen as there is only one on the web site. Torn between the stainless and the black as the better combination.

^ very nice watch & fits your wrist well.

My 2 cents - the black is sharper looking. But I suspect the other option looks better in real life than in the pics.

    Apollon Chronograph

Been lurking here a long while to get ideas on a watch for myself and actually had that same one in mind but not 100% sure. Anything to note if I do get it or something similar you'd recommend?

Can't find the bloody camera !

However, the light was very good on the roof of my building and the trusty iphone came good for some decent shots. When I look at this watch I 'get' what the japanese design aesthetic invovles. Much like my Marinemaster, you take the essential function that you want the 'thing' to perform, you excise every unnecessary component that doesn't produce towards achieving that function, and then you refine every remaining component to the highest degree possible so as to end up with something, well, wonderful really.

I'll let you guys judge :-

edit : argh..then you spout a lot of flowery nonsense and take the pics upside down.
