went to see Back to the Future, still holds up well, and great to see it on the big screen, kinda weird it was only PG back then, with obvious sex references and a bit of a rape sceen,

    anyway good fun 10/10

just watched Heat for the first time, not a hugh De Niro or Pacino fan, but it was a decent show all the same, bit of overacting from Pacino as per usual, De Niro was actually decent in it, and the supporting cast was great kilmer, judd, portman (for the small enought part she had)

    8/10

The Other Guys: Definatly reccommend it, a lot of laughs throughout and the first 10 mins had the whole cinema in stitches laughing. The chemistry between Wahlberg and Farrell is great, although they let Farrell do his improv thing for a little too long in some scenes (as usual). Could be a little shorter, but overall very good. 4/5

Honey I Shrunk The Kids: Just good solid fun. The minature world they created is still very cool and mostly holds up pretty good

Tombstone: First time seeing it after a reccommendation from boards. Very impressed, great movie. Has some of the cheesiness and dramatics of the old westerns which just adds to it IMO

Mr. Nice. Dull. Confused. All over the shop really. About half an hour too long for what it was. Wouldn't recommend.

I watched Looking for Eric last night on channel 4 and was pleasantly surprised. Probably one of the better films I've seen in the last couple of months, found it very engaging for want of a better word.

Scream - as inspired by the recent Scream 4 thread, I finally got around to watching this, 13 or 14 years too late (I was but a wee lad when it was first released). What a fun film. So fantastically self-aware and self-referential. A love letter to slasher films on one hand, and a merciless parody of them on the other. It's hilarious that this film spawned the 'Scary Movie' series, which is the absolute worst kind of 'satire' (well, until Friedberg and Seltzer showed up to **** all over cinema), because Scream is pretty much a defining satire. It's pleasantly gory, very funny on occasion and the ending - including the extended
    house party
sequence that kicks off around 45 minutes before the end - impressively over-the-top. The cast are, for the most part, excellent. Have the sequels to watch over the next few nights, so hopefully they'll have at least some of the wit, humour and energy of the first!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it johnny!

I really enjoyed the second film actually, but the third was pretty woeful!

EDIT: One of my favourite bits was Wes Craven dressed up as Fred, The Janitor! ;)

Yeah, checking out the trivia afterwards they had lots of fun cameos (Linda Blair shows up too). They should have given Henry Winkler a bigger role, given he only had two major scenes:
So two of your fellow students just savagely murdered and this is how you show your compassion and sensitivity huh? You sicken me. Your whole havoc-inducing, thieving, whoring generation disgusts me. I'll tell you something else. You're both expelled. Get out!

You're right. You're absoluteley right. It's not fair. Fairness would be to rip your insides out and hang you from a tree so we can expose you for the heartless, desensitized, little ****s that you are!

I think the chemistry between DeNiro and Pacino as respected enemies was infinitely better than with Affleck/Hamm and the characters overall were more complex. Hamm's FBI agent had no real background for us to make a decision on him. The Town did a reversal on Heat also by
Making you side with Affleck and Co. when they were the bad guys. Made the authorities out to be the bad guys. It's not often I root for a cop-killing bank robber.

The set-pieces in The Town were staggeringly good and did rival the apres-bank scene in Heat while adding a touch of Ronin to the proceedings. Heart was pumping watching the chase sequences.

Two very good movies but Heat shades it for me.

my question about the book for anyone who has read it ..how did it end up that way?

I went to re-watch Heat myself after The Town but opened my DVD case to find it empty. :(

    My Family are bastards.

AFAIK the book doesn't explain it either but it's generally understood that they are experiencing nuclear winter - ie. the aftermath of a global nuclear war.

    'The Devil in Miss Jones'

A friend of mine lent me a bunch of 70's horror/exploitation movies she aquired on the web, quite a number I'd seen before, but some were new to me. I'd heard of many of the titles before, like 'Don't Go into the Woods' and 'The Boogeyman' but hadn't seen them.

One title which caught my eye was 'The Devil in Miss Jones' from 1973. I was sure that I was familiar with a title like that, but also sure that I hadn't seen the film before. The cover of the DVD was black with the title and a red playing card showing the devil on the right hand side. Probably a tarot card of some description. The red text on the back was in Dutch. The only pic on the back was of Miss Jones' face. Hmmmm...

Anyway, I popped it in the DVD.

The first scene has "Miss Jones" in corpse makeup and playing with herself saying to the camera that if you put it in her she can "get off". The man she is talking to is sitting on the floor seemingly disinterested and telling her that he's "not mad" and that "He's here...you'll see". The scene lasts less that a minute, but includes a full frontal shot of her...ahem, parts below.

OK, I thought. This is an "uncut" version  I also suspected that there wasn't going to be much "horror" in this "horror" flick. But 70's movies being what they were, I decided to press on despite being sure that this was no horror filck I was watching. Perhaps it was going to like one of those Jean Rollin or Jess Franco movies. Some of which I'd seen before.

The credits roll to some nice piano music, the type of which you'd hear in any number of 70's horror movies. It stars Georgina Spelvin and nobody else I have ever heard of before. It's also a pretty small cast.

The film then shifts to an apartment in New York, Miss Jones' I presume and she prepares herself for a bath. In preparation she takes out a razor, one of those horrible metal ones that looks like a medieval torture device and removes the blade. So, I know where this is going. Anyway, see commits suicide and kicks the bucket remarkably quickly. Jones then finds herself in Limbo, leading to a strange scene where Jones is astonished to find that her good life amounts to nothing and she's going to be punished because she took her own life. "It's the one thing they will not forgive", she's told by the suited man she is talking to. Jones is a bit perturbed by the ease with which she finds herself condemned and then says that she wants a spell back on Earth to give into lust. "It's one of the 7 deadly sins isn't it?". If she is going to be damned, she might as well be damned for something.

My spider senses were tingling at this point...oh dear.

The suited man agrees to send Jones back, on the condition that she comes back to Limbo when he calls her, "No nonsense". Jones agrees and is then told to walk through "That door".

Jones duly does and meets "The Teacher".

From there on in, 'The Devil in Miss Jones' plays out as the porno it is. Oh well...in for a penny, in for a pound.

The...eh...Teacher "teaches" Miss Jones thing or two, all of which I'll leave to your imagination and afterwards engages in a whole manner of other sordid physical bumping and grinding with some other "70's porno types", I'm sure you all know the sort.

Anyway, after about 30 minutes of this, the scene shifts to the suited mans office. He tells Jones that "it's time" and she says to him that she's "frightened". The suited man says the she shouldn't be afraid of fires etc as that's just a myth. He tells Jones that she'll be quite comfortable. Jones then finds herself in the room we saw at the beginning of the film. Her own private hell, complete with an impotent disinterested man and her own inability to please herself sexually.

'The Devil in Miss Jones' feels like a straight horror movie that wants to be a porno, or a porno that wants to be a horror film. The acting in the beginning and end sequences is rather good (in a 70's exploitation way) and Spelvin (or whatever her real name was) could have carved out a different niche for herself as a straight actress. She is certainly no worse than some "actors" I've seen in flicks from that period. But, once the yap is out of the way the "characters" start screwing each other, it bizarrely becomes uninteresting. Perhaps it's because the setup promises a different type of film. I don't know. None of the sex scenes are particularly erotic or sexy. The people are all way too ugly and somewhat ridiculous looking too. Big mustaches on the guys and hideous blue eyeshadow on the women.

Also, in this day and age, such films are confined to collectors items or curiosity pieces. With porn directly available on the internet to cater for nearly every taste, I just cannot imagine 'The Devil in Moss Jones' being appealing to anyone in that way. It also won't appeal to the horror/grindhouse/exploitation crowd. In the end, it plays out like a cautionary tale, in the vain of Geoffrey Chaucer...albeit in a hardcore fashion.

By the way, the title is taken from a 1941 comedy called 'The Devil and Miss Jones', starring Jean Arthur. :D Brilliant!

Goldeneye: 1995 seems a long time ago... But that is when Pierce Brosnan made his first outing as James Bond, Agent 007. This is undoubtedly the best of Pierce Brosnan's 007 films. The storyline (as ever with Bond films) is as ropey as ever... But the setpieces and the action scenes make up for that.

The opening scene, featuring the highest ever bungee jump committed to celluloid, is superb. 007 and 006 (Sean Bean) break in and attempt to sabotage an illicit Soviet nerve gas laboratory in Archangel, Siberia. The mission goes horribly wrong as 006 is captured and then shot dead by Colonel Ourumov and 007 narrowly escapes following a dramatic chase of a light aircraft on motorcycle.

From there, landscapes of Monte Carlo, Siberia (again), St. Petersburg, London and Cuba whip past at a frenetic pace, and a cracking supporting cast (featuring Judi Dench, Robert Carlyle, Alan Cumming and Joe Don Baker) keeps things moving nicely.

The storyline regarding a Russian-based crime syndicate, named 'The Janus Group', and their theft of the eponymous 'Goldeneye' Russian nuclear satellite system and their intention to use it to cause financial meltdown on a global scale is almost incidental and the motive and motivation of the main villain is decidedly weak (claiming to get revenge for his murdered Lienz Cossack parents; it truly boils down to pure greed, to be honest).

The action and the acting from a very tuxedo-friendly Brosnan and the supporting cast make this one of the better Bond films and a great actioner in general.

    8/10

Grindhouse - Planet Terror & Death Proof

    Planet Terror - 7/10
    Death Proof - 5/10

I nearly just wanted to fast forward Death Proof to any scene with Kurt Russell because he was the only thing that made the film interesting. Very slow story. Excellent scenes with the cars though.

Planet Terror captured the genre much better. If you could only watch one of them, make sure its this one. Some great one liners.

The fake trailers were nearly better than both films :pac:

    Machete - 8/10

Brilliant for the type of film that it is. Mindless action at its best.

    Hows the serenity? :pac:

When I was in Oz, they all kept quoting either the Castle or Chopper like the Irish would quote Father Ted/The Snapper. Aussies definitely have a different sense of humour to the Irish though.

Went on a bit of a film binge after making the Chrissie Puddings :)

Punisher - War Zone - Mindless action delivered what I expected.

Die Hard 4.0 - Saw this in the cinema but enjoyed it more on the small screen here at home for some reason.

District 13 - French Crime Action film which has some breathtaking stunts and I enjoyed it loads. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoy films like The Transporter one or the French Taxi ones.

Just finished watching Zombieland. Thoroughly enjoyable action movie, good cast and some very funny moments.

The intro is brilliantly done, and does not bore you with a blank screen while the opening credits roll past.

The use of the main character's rules, and how nervous he would get once in a situation where he has to think about these rules, are brilliant. Great chemistry between all 4 of the main characters. Woody Harrelson's role as a violent, no-mercy zombie killer with an obsession for finding a Twinky is also brilliant to watch.

It delivers constantly, whether it be with humour or action, and a lot of times both at the same time. Also contains one of the best cameo's I've ever seen!

Can't help but think of "Shaun of the Dead" when watching this, but that isn't a bad thing imo.

    8.5/10

Back to the Future - sadly I don't live in Dublin for the latest release so had to settle for dusting off the DVD and giving it the upscaling treatment.

Quite possibly my favourite movie of all time.

    Chunking Express

Rewatched this tonight, wonderful film. Effortlessly slick and hip in a weird 90s sort of way. Neon visuals, two simple but engaging stories, and a great soundtrack (featuring California Dreamin' around twenty times). Definitely my favourite Wong Kar Wai film by a distance!

    The Fall _ - excellent,excellentfilm the costumes,scenery (á la Terry Gilliam)

In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances.

Machete- Part of the Grind house series.... NUTS!... but enjoyable.
After being betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss.

The Ghost- I tell you what Polanski may be a Sex fiend, but he's an excellent director. not his greatest effort but a good solid film.

A ghostwriter hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy.

Do you mean Robbie Coltrane? Robert Carlyle is the villain of The World is Not Enough (but it is such a perfect place to start, my love).

GoldenEye and Casino Royale are my prefered Bond films.

    ----

Last film I watched was The Hangover. Didn't think I'd like it from the trailer but instead found it enjoyable enough. The main characters aren't likeable and kinda agree with some of the reviews I've read saying that the film's misogynistic but that's what a bachelor party is, no? I imagine The Stagette would be a similar film.
