Yeah i had to install XP recently after installing Windows 7 on another PC and XP takes sooooo long in comparison. An hour versus 15 mins for Win 7. That doesn't include the time taken needed to install all the drivers required by XP that Windows has embedded.

I tried XP mode last night, I wasn't too impressed with it - just felt rather sluggish. It would only be good for 2D usage, it still emulates the same old S3 Trio 32.

I've often noticed that when installing XP with the default IDE driver it takes longer than if you install it via F6. It seems to me that the generic IDE driver runs the setup in PIO mode while third party drivers use DMA all the time.

interesting, I'l try F6 next time.

Assuming you have a storage driver to install via F6. ;)

Just installed Windows 7 RC1 onto a virtual machine.

No classic menu. Quick launch area now a hybrid quick launch and open window area which I find particularly useless.

Windows Explorer still useless, can't customize it in any sense of the word. Can't add buttons, no up button, can't get rid of that stupid "organise" bar.

The control panel requires a million clicks to get to the right section.

The only improvement over Vista is the performance. Unfortunately it seems to take the retarded UI features and lack of ability to customize from Vista to whole new retarded levels.

    Windows XP pro SP3 ftw!!!!!!!!

I'll install Win 7 onto the physical computer later to see how Media Center is looking.

    There is, Google it.

You can auto hide it, again Google it.

Click on "Category" at the top and change view to either small or large icons.

Opinions on using this to upgrade my main Vista OS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭Ginger

I just rebuilt my main dev machine from XP Pro to Win7 x64. For a clean install it took just over 20 mins.

Everything is working fine on it. SQL 2008 Developer needs SP1 and nearly everything else is working natively.

Drivers picked up quickly except for the finger print scanner and the memory card reader but otherwise very impressive.

Nope, no classic start menu for Windows 7.

The only thing I've found was a modified shellstyle.dll which solves the problem for vista. Unless you have a better solution for Windows 7

    Now that does work :pac:

Test if your ISP is manipulating (Throttling) your BitTorrent traffic.

Run the test: (Test Button is near the end of the Webpage).

    -

Ah fantastic i've been looking for a test for ages. +1
BT isnt throttling and apparently i can get higher torrenting speeds than TCP... weird...
anyway sorry for hijacking... as you were...

does that test actually work for you? When i click start test it just refreshes the page back to the top.

It worked for me but I had to choose the simple test - the long test just refreshed the page.

Just make sure you have a port set in whatever Torrent Prog you use and most importantly that you have said port opened correctly in your router.

No problems with speeds then ;) (depending on seeds of course).

Just remember folks you can run torrents on windows, but only for legal downloads.

AFAIK No Microsoft product is legally available via a torrent.

So we'll leave further discussion for another thread, perhaps on the broadband forum if ye want to talk about throttling.

Installed the RC today on my old Dell to try it out before I put it on my new machine, apart from no driver for my sound card it was pretty painless.

Just upgraded yesterday from the beta to the RC. Have a weird issue with it, when i shutdown it turns off properly but around 10 minutes later it turns back on and an error comes up about an unproper shutdown.

I'm thinking of installing Windows 7 on my computer, can I just create a partition on my hard drive and install it there?

And just boot from there also.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,538 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Yes. If you have Vista use that to make the new partition.
If your on XP you can create a gparted boot disk to do it.
Once thats done stick in your Win7 DVD and install on the new patition.

    Thanks,

    Everything installed and working fine

Tried installing the RC on my Dell gx 270 here, no matter what I do windows wont install my drivers for my onboard graphics. Its weird cause I dont remember any hassle with the beta!

    Anyone have any ideas?

Having a problem upgrading from Vista SP1...

Its copying the files in the installation screen, and gets to 94/5% when the following message comes up:

    21o79qg.jpg

What am I doing wrong? I downloaded the file, put it on a DVD and run the DVD from the normal windows page. I didnt 'clean install', but just chose the upgrade option. Also I didnt boot it form the DVD through the BIOS at startup. Does anything above make a difference?

I have already re-downloaded the file just incase that was the problem but it was the same.

    Any ideas???

    Thanks!

You could always install it onto a new partition along side Vista.

Quad booting Windows 7 RC1 with XP, Vista & Ubuntu 9.04. Going quite well, it doesn't rape the CPU unlike Vista, and is parallel to XP with regards responsiveness and speed on my system.

I wouldn't be mad on it as a primary operating system though.

I'm having major issues with Windows 7 on my netbook. BSOD all over the shop, it appears to happen whenever i hibernate/sleep my laptop that it just dies. I then have to go back and forth a few times into safe mode to get it to run okay...
    Me thinks i'll do a re-install.

How is W7 for gaming guys, anyone played TF2 on it?

My Vista install is pretty old and clunky now and I don't mind replacing it with the RC 7100 64 bit edition if it's stable enough.

I haven't played TF2 on it but I've played loads of other games on it. They run like a dream. I've crysis warhead completly maxed out (no AA though) at 1920x1200 with my Q6600 and 4870 1GB and very smooth frame rates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Bob, I've been playing TF2 and Left 4 Dead on it. Both run fine.

Anyone playing with the XP virtualisation? I've had a quick look today and it's pretty slick, running apps 7 wouldnt install with no problem..could be a killer app for some businesses.
