If true then it's also true for Vista so nothing specific to windows 7

I would doubt it as they have gotten bad publicity in the past from betas that phoned home.

Happens on XP too :( I opened one of the Dll files from an application in notepad, banged on the keyboard for about 5 minutes, saved the file, and then was shocked to find the application didn't work afterwards :(

One time I was using Linux and was messing about with the xorg.conf and my display stopped working. Its obvious to me that Linus Torvalds is trying to steal my display for nefarious purposes!

Here's a funny thing, ever since i went back to XP from vista I noticed something odd. The search function...it works. All the options are laid out where I can see them, folder selection is elegant and I can actually find stuff with a minimum amount of tooling around. Even without an indexing/random disk thrashing service.

Why on earth did they need to hide the search up in a corner with context based menu's and feck all options? its even worse than vista. As for the start menu search..emmm great if you feel like sitting there and doing nothing else with your PC while a search runs. But that kinda defeats the original point of windows really.

    maybe its just me :(

Well, at least with Linux you can go in and look. All the source code is open so you can't hide anything sneaky.

Start menu search isn't slow for me at all, and how is the search box up the right corner of a folder "hidden"?

Yeah, if anything it's more consistent seeing as firefox, ie etc. all have the search bar in that location by default. Only tried the seach there (the non start menu one) and found it pretty good. When in my music I typed in "audiosl" and it picked up my audioslave stuff pretty quickly. Searching on the c drive was slower (I don't have that indexed) and it only picked up the two audioslave folders I have in my music. So when you seach in the my music folder it seems to search the tags as well as the filename which is quite good. Never used the search much in xp (don't really use it much in 7 either) so maybe xp search does the same.

Edit: Even searching everything on my computer for "a" brings back over 8,000 entries instantaneously. XP searching would take ages to do that. I do agree though that it would be nice to be able to limit the search like you could in xp.

I said slow? I seem to remember that i said it won't let you open other windows without abandoning the search.

Stowing the options to search content/names etc away in the organize tab seems to be another piece of inspired stupidity. Call me cranky but search options belong in search dialogue boxes.

Dragged an old(ish) PC out of storage to install XP on again. Pain in the ass. Video drivers didn't seem to work. Could not find the mobo drivers anywhere online. Stupid USB 2.0 wouldn'y work. Lots of exclamation marks in Device Manager.

Decided to give Windows 7 a shot on it. 30 minutes later, a perfectly working system. No additional drivers needed for anything.

I'll definately be buying it on release.

Most OS's support older hardware simply because the drivers were available. Nothing new, Windows 3.1 was the same. XP dates from 2001 so you would need a fairly old machine to be sure of built in drives. Windows 7 probably won't have any drivers for hardware developed after it's released.

Then again it does suck that they don't have as many drivers as you'd like on windows update :(

I'd also say that the reason your USB 2.0 didn't work is that it's an RTM disc you used (no service packs at all). At least SP1 is needed for USB 2.0 support.

    For Windows:

The maker's web site is always my 1st port of call.
    Dell is very good.
Toshiba Canada has XP drivers for Europe Vista only Toshibas (same laptops different model name).
    Acer seems very good.

2nd port of call is then the Module Manufacturer / OEM part supplier.

3rd port of call is the Chip/chip set maker
    ATI/AMD
    Nvidia
    Intel
(Broadcom is no use, you need the OEM website)

4th port is then Google for driver.

For Linux the 1st place is the package source of the Distro, which if it is PC/Laptop maker installed might include the DELL or whatever site.
Then OEM/Chip maker. Some like Brother are good.
Then the forums etc for that distro.
    Then google.

    Then Google

Just instaled Win7 this morning, must say a plesent experiance so far. No mad hard disc trashing, no in your face safety and security warnings

WMP is actually nippy and behaving itself. So this is the first time I havnt had a instant urge to install other movie/mp3 programs.

I installed Windows 7 7100 x64 on a seperate, new HDD and it wouldn't recognise my Lan ports. It's an Nvidia 680i and i think i remember reading somewhere that W7 doesn't support them. This doesn;t bother me as i just wanted to see how it ran on my main pc.... the thing is, when i boot in Vista, iit doesn't see any network connections!!!!!

I put in a spare LAN card and this was seen by both OS's immidiately, but is my mobo fecked? I uninstalled the Nvidia Ethernet software and re-booted but still no joy on vista or W7

Despite this. i love Windows 7... it's about time they got it right, i was actually considering apple..... now i don;t have too!

Just saw this on Engadget - http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2009/04/24/secret-no-more-revealing-virtual-windows-xp-for-windows-7.aspx

They're announced XP Mode as the big secret feature in Windows 7 - XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

Now, they can claim almost complete Windows XP compatibility, or almost 100 percent compatibility with all currently running Windows applications.

    That's friggin sweet.

Ru that's a bizarre problem, is it showing an unknown device in device manager in Windows 7 or Vista? I know you've prob checked that but it's the really the only thing i can think of. If there's nothing there check is it disabled in BIOS.

This is very true. I've started using Windows Media Player instead of winamp or VLC player.

When does the Beta expire? How much will it cost in Ireland?

I heard the original beta expires in August of this year and the other leaked builds in March 2010.

Just installed the RC version of Ultimate (build 7100) and its a big improvement over the first beta (which was still great), think really will be a great OS I think.

Can you upgrade from 7077 or is a fresh install best?

IIRC they are using the same driver model as Vista so any Vista compatible drivers should work.

Bear in mind, this is using Hyper-V virtualisation to run XP, and it's really only for old business (2D) apps that won't work in Vista/7. It's not for running 3d games.

Fresh install in the only option with the RC1 but fortunately, Windows Easy Transfer (in Accessories > System Tools) works surprisingly well.

Using the RC1 now myself, it's very stable and I'm still yet to find any compatibily issues. And honestly, this is the first time I've liked using Windows Update, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Centre and Paint directly from Windows, no alternatives (although VLC and Photoshop are still installed :) ). Windows Update finds all of the neccesary drivers for you so well, I'm especially looking forward to seeing Device Stage in action.

They can claim it. but I doubt it.

Will plugin non-USB hardware needing XP drivers worK?
    Will software key dongles work?
Will all Firewire and USB gadgets work?
Will XP be able to access Win7 driver specialist HW, or only the basics (maybe sound, not Webcam)?

Also needs supporting virtualisation feature on CPU. This is ploy to persuade Businesses to buy more expensive PCs running Win7. It's going to be useless for specialist HW users, home users, gamers. It's a "feel good" factor to get IT depts to upgrade.

Really it will be poor compared with simply installing XP direct on a lower spec machine. It's not much use to sell a upgrade package of Win7 for an EXISTING PC that is happily running XP.

It might win them a few more corporate sales. But only on businesses buying new hardware. Most places I know have stopped buying desktop PCs and buy Sub €250 DELL vostro with XP pro on them. The era of upgrades ever 2 years to higher power desktop PCs is gone. Only Gamers, Media Centre builders and possibly appliances/Servers want "desktop" type systems anymore.

    Something like:
    Laptop sales up 8%
    Netbook sales up 45%
    Desktop sales -30%

I noticed yesterday the new cheaper Lenovo Laptops in Tesco have XP home.
