Clean install is always better - I would not do an upgrade, asking for problems.

Try a dual boot with XP and 7 - if you have a spare hard drive, or partition.

    Yep fresh install for sure.

As Zascar says since you are unsure if it will suit your needs get this program to partition your drive and then run the Windows 7 install. You can always boot back to XP then if something is not working.

Funnily, Microsoft are trying to challenge the poor result experienced by people who upgrade rather than fresh install - have a read of: http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-experience.aspx

With the release candidate working until June 1st 2010, I presume that'd mean you'd still get all updates etc that you'd get with the retail version right? If thats the case I'm seriously tempted to run it on my main machine since I need to do a rebuild soon anyway.

I'm tempted to try backing up my XP and upgrading just to see how it goes. If it messes up I can always restore the backup image. But yes I've always been the type to recommend a clean install as there's too much that can go wrong.

which is why they say this :p
These instructions will be brief. Since everyone reading is a well-versed and experienced beta tester you know ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR MACHINE before running any OS installation and NEVER TEST AN OS ON YOUR ONLY COPY OF ANY DATA. Testing a pre-release product means just that—it is testing and it is pre-release. Even though this is a Release Candidate, we are still testing the product. We have very high confidence but even if an error happens once in 1,000,000 we want to make sure everyone is taking the precautions normal for a pre-release product.

Prolly being extremely dumb here, I've pretty much ignored everything about Windows 7 until now, but feel like giving it a lash tomorrow... (could do with a fresh install of Vista anyways, so might as well push the boat out)
If I have a 32bit version of Vista, does that mean I'm restricted to a 32bit version of Windows 7? (I'll be doing a clean install of course)

Microsoft article says the following, but doesn't really make it clear if this is in relation to a clean install or upgrade...
"Choose between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, based on the version of Windows you are currently running and your machine’s hardware configuration"

If you're doing a clean install then you can choose whatever you like (assuming you have a 64-bit capable processor).

Hmmmm....I'm considering doing an upgrade of my Vista partition rather than using my partition of the beta version. I will backup tonight, and give it a bash tomorrow. Or, would anyone advise against this?

Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010.

    I tried the link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
and logged in ok, but when the download manager loads it says it cannot find the file!!

    Anyone else having problems?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Nope, I've just started the download now and its working fine. If it makes any difference I clicked on the link in the IT Pro box next to the language dropdowns.

Been running 7077 for the last 2 - 3 weeks and its been perfectly stable, mapping network drives etc. I think Ill upgrade to the RC today and then add it to the domain and see how it goes in a 'work' enviroment. I would be happy as an IT Admin to role this out to a company network as it stands. thats not taking into consideration some small time or internal based sw thay may not be compatible

How large is the RC download?

Apparently they have blocked it from upgrading directly from the beta to RC 1 because it wouldn't be stable. You can if you want -->http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=922&page=5 But it would be risky.

I m just finished downloading and will be clean installing on my laptop and PC.

    Best OS Ever!!! :D

They really should distribute this stuff via torrent like linux distros do. :mad:I might just download this via usenet, had an attempt fail on me via their servers. I got my key from their website.

    Why?

The download from the site is very fast!

Yea but it uses a stupid java download manager.. wtf?

Can anyone recommend to me whether or not I should download Windows 7? My laptop spec are:

    80gb hard disk
    1gb RAM
Windows vista home basic SP1 (32-bit)
Processor: AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology 1.60Ghz

I only use my laptop for surfing the net, downloading music and watching tv/movies, and for putting music on my ipod. I'm perfectly happy with Vista but I wouldn't mind a change!

Would anyone recommend trying Windows 7? Or advise against it?

    Thanks!

It means it's downloaded from many many sources rather then just 1. I understand that MS will have a massive server(s) but there can never be enough on the launch day.

I clicked no to installing the java applet and it just opened a normal download link then, which could be fed into Flashget

I just installed 7100 x64. Too early to tell how it'll be though.

I was getting a full 1MB/s download from Microsoft's HTTP server. I'd be lucky to get 200KB/s from a torrent - I don't consider them to be fast at all (yes my ports are forwarded correctly). Then again I suspect UPC are throttling.

Test if your ISP is manipulating (Throttling) your BitTorrent traffic.

Run the test: (Test Button is near the end of the Webpage).
